Center for Qualitative Psychology 10 th Worshop Qualitative Research in Psychology (2009) Topic: Beyond text: Video and other medium use in qualitative research (Germania, Febbraio 2009) Theoretical and Methodological Implications from a study on Judicial Police’s training requirements: The analysis of video through ATLAS.ti DE GREGORIO E, BUSSU A, PATRIZI P. 5 The research objective is linked to the International Project on “The study of false testimony within Social Psychology and Law: a study on the coding and decoding aspects of false communication among justice operators”, co-ordinated by the University of Bergamo and of which The University of Sassari’s Dept. of Economics Institutions and Society – Center for Urban Studies – and the University of Portsmouth are partners. The empirical research focuses on the Judicial Police’s training requirements for evidence collection. In this respect, there are not national protocols for conducting interrogations and the Judicial Police’s training is based on field experience. Through six focus groups, held during two years, this study has investigated individual techniques, sometimes adopted as standard procedures, employed to conduct interrogations; the main operational strategies; the issues that have arisen in the field when collecting evidence; the elements that help define a “good testimony”; personal competences and abilities; explicit and implicit training requirements that Judicial Police officers could benefit from in order to improve the quality and effectiveness of their work. This article describes the analysis procedures in details and discusses the main issues on using videos for qualitative and computer-assisted research with the qualitative analysis software ATLAS.ti. The whole research process has benefited from using video recordings, particularly when analysing non verbal communication and participants’ reactions to the researchers’ presence, as well as the researcher’s reflective process. 5 Dept. of Economy, Institutions and Society -University of Sassari LXXXIX
