le parole sono usate come i pennelli su una tavolozza piuttosto che quando devono sostenere un
ragionamento di carattere speculativo, soprattutto in questa fase iniziale della sua carriera. A meno
che non preferiamo ritenere, con Luckhurst, che questa parte del romanzo abbia piuttosto delle
valenze parodiche rispetto alle regole del genere, che prevedono una ferrea accuratezza
scientifica 233 .
Gasiorek sottolinea i punti di contatto tra The Crystal World e due romanzi di Graham
Greene, un autore che Ballard ha sempre affermato di apprezzare, The Power and the Glory (1940)
e A Burnt-out Case (1960), dove troviamo un prete come personaggio e un lebbrosario. La
complessità e l’ambiguità delle motivazioni che spingono i personaggi sono un tratto comune a
queste opere 234 . In relazione a questo aspetto Luckhurst cita l’autore stesso, a conferma
dell’esistenza di una tensione verso la trascendenza nei protagonisti della tetralogia:
Within science fiction, Ballard is often attacked for his pessimism, his nihilism, in that a number of
narrators, especially of the catastrophe series, seem to will death. Ballard has insisted however, that the logic
of these texts is towards fulfillment, the transcendence of death-in-life for life-in-death, which is why Kerans
turns south into the sun (The Drowned World) and Ransom [sic, in realtà si tratta di Sanders] returns to the
forest (The Crystal World) 235 .
Naturalmente l’influenza più evidente è, come accennato, Heart of Darkness di Joseph
Conrad 236 , per la sua ambientazione africana e la navigazione lungo il fiume, ma con l’illuminante -
per così dire - inversione tra tenebra e luce, laddove l’oscurità dell’antecedente è sostituita dalla
luminosità cristallina del testo più recente. Brigg chiarisce che
[…] at the heart of The Crystal World lies a different motivation than Conrad’s desire to chronicle
the moral horror of mankind and particularly of colonial powers. Ballard reflects and refracts the seductive
potential of a death that is not a death (and which, apparently, does not involve any pain), a movement out of
time into an eternity of grotesque glittering beauty mingled with horror 237 .
Nella sua analisi del romanzo Jeannette Baxter privilegia l’ambientazione rispetto alle
suggestioni misticheggianti, coerentemente con la sua visione dell’opera ballardiana secondo una
prospettiva storica. La vicenda si svolge in Camerun negli anni Sessanta, pertanto un legame con le
