apporti dei personaggi con l’ambiente che non tra di loro 218 . Personaggi che, a parte Ransom, come
abbiamo visto, «are perverted versions of characters from [Shakespeare’s] The Tempest – Lomax as
Prospero, Quilter as Caliban, Philip Jordan as Ariel» 219 . La madre di Quilter, Mrs. Quilter, dalla
“witch-like appearance”, corrisponde alla strega Sycorax, la madre di Calibano. La figura del
Calibano la troviamo anche altrove, per esempio nei personaggi di Big Caesar in The Drowned
World e Proctor in Concrete Island. Ma sono figure minacciose anche alcuni personaggi ‘superiori’,
come Strangman (The Drowned World) e Vaughan (Crash). Anch’essi, come i ‘calibani’, spesso
trovano la morte nel corso della narrazione.
Pringle propone un’interpretazione in chiave psicanalitica di queste tipologie: in termini
freudiani «the Caliban figures stand for the Id, while the Prospero figures stand for the Ego» 220 , cioè
rispettivamente la sfera delle passioni, l’irrazionale (il sogno, le libere associazioni, etc.), e la sfera
della razionalità (il principio di realtà). Entrambi rappresentano una minaccia per il sé, il
protagonista, che cerca di trovare se stesso e il proprio posto nel mondo recuperando la propria
integrità individuale che è scissa, disarmonica, appunto perché non c’è equilibrio tra gli elementi
costitutivi della mente 221 . Brigg concorda: «He [Ballard] is in at least one sense in tune with both
Jung and the existentialists in suggesting that the psyche must adapt to external reality» 222 . Delville
rileva come in genere i personaggi femminili ballardiani appartengano alla tipologia dell’Anima
junghiana - la funzione animica mette in relazione la coscienza con l’inconscio -, che può assumere
l’aspetto negativo, disturbante, della Lamia 223 . Non a caso uno dei capitoli di The Drought si intitola
proprio “The Lamia”, in riferimento al personaggio di Miranda Lomax. Come Pringle, anche
Stephenson rileva delle analogie con The Tempest, ma nei termini di quella che definisce una
grottesca parodia 224 .
Un altro parallelo possibile è quello fra Ransom e il protagonista della “Rime of the Ancient
Mariner” di Samuel Taylor Coleridge:
