The Large Forest e Forest and Sun, ai quali l’autore allude nel romanzo: «For a few moments
Kerans stared quietly at the dim annulus of Ernst’s sun glowering through the exotic vegetation» 206 .
In The Drought (1965), uscita come The Burning World nell’edizione americana (1964),
The Drought was my second [sic] novel, written after The Drowned World. I didn't like it very much
at the time. There was something rather too arid -- something of the aridity of the landscape spilled over into
the novel, and it didn't take off for me. I still don't care for it very much, but it contains so many of the ideas -
- quantified image, isolated object, and emotion detached from any human context -- that I began to develop
in The Atrocity Exhibition and in Crash. They were all implicit in that book 207 .
206 J. G. Ballard, The Drowned World, op. cit., p. 29. «Although Stephenson does well to rescue Ballard’s eschatological
fictions from nearly thirty years of literal readings, his own displacement of Ballard’s writing into a transcendental
framework similarly fails to ground the text in its avant-garde moment of production. […] The image of a golden disc
which shines through dense vegetation repeats across Ernst’s paintings such as The Large Forest (1927) and Forest and
Sun (1927). Drawing on the German Romantic tradition, Ernst’s forests articulate a moment of sublime hesitation, an
oscillation between fear and wonder, as the intense light of the sun plays against the darkness of the hostile trees.[…]
The primordial sun that Kerans searches for, then, is another fiction, a Surrealist image of such resonance that it bleeds
out of the picture frame and becomes the beating force of the narrative landscape.» Ivi, J. G. Ballard’s Surrealist
Imagination, pp. 33-34.
