Tradizione in gran
Here, as throughout The Atrocity Exhibition, the nervous system of the characters have been
externalised, as part of the reversal of the interior and exterior worlds. Highways, office blocks, faces and
street signs are perceived as if they were elements in a malfunctioning central nervous system 169 .
i personaggi.
167 «It's not difficult to see why JG Ballard has been labelled the Seer from Shepperton. His first major novel, The
Drowned World, explored the implications of ecological catastrophe decades before global warming and the Kyoto
Agreement entered public consciousness. Then, in his notorious collage novel The Atrocity Exhibition, Ballard
predicted the rise of Ronald Reagan from Hollywood cowboy to US president. Even the parameters of Princess Diana’s
death in a Parisian underpass in 1997 had been sketched out, to some degree, in Crash.» Jeannette Baxter, “The Age of
Unreason”, The Guardian, 22/06/2004.
168 «[…] “We are far more out of touch with even the nearest approaches of inner space than we now are with the
reaches of outer space. We respect the voyager, the explorer, the climber, the space man. It makes more sense to me as a
valid project -- indeed, as a desperately urgently required project for our time, to explore the inner space and time of our
consciousness”. Ballard’s “Which Way to Inner Space?” argues that contemporary space flights only confirm what the
“space operas” unintentionally proved: outer space is banal. And yet the above quotation does not come from Ballard's
editorial, but from R. D. Laing’s The Politics of Experience; the consonance of the two is remarkable.» R. Luckhurst,
