Capitolo III
SURREALISMO, PITTURA, INCONSCIO
1. Inner space e disaster story
recensendo i libri Surrealism di Patrick Waldberg e The History of Surrealist Painting di Marcel
Jean:
The images of surrealism are the iconography of inner space. […] What uniquely characterizes this
fusion of the outer world of reality and the inner world of the psyche (which I have termed “inner space”) 164
is its redemptive and therapeutic power. To move through these landscapes is a journey of return to one’s
innermost being 165 .
Queste parole richiamano l’evoluzione a ritroso dell’ambiente naturale e la conseguente
regressione nel ‘passato archeopsichico’ dei personaggi di The Drowned World (1962), il suo
secondo romanzo.
britannico ricorda:
In my first novel, The Drowned World, I put in a number of references to the surrealists. I remember
the publisher, Victor Gollancz, wanted me to delete these references because they felt my novel was serious,
and that I diminished my book by mentioning the surrealists. […] In the 40’s and 50’s, I thought that
surrealism was the most important imaginative enterprise this century has embarked on. And I still do 166 .
emphatically Jungian sense “inner space” is found in J. B. Priestley's 1953 article “They Come From Inner Space”.
Priestley sees science fiction as a set of contemporary myths, deploying the familiar equation of the popular and the
unconscious.»
lettura freudiana.
