Subliminal Man” e “The Secret History of World War III” 161 .
“The Subliminal Man” (1961) descrive una società sostanzialmente orwelliana, in fondo non così
avvenimenti narrati:
In Kingdom Come the hero is a massive shopping centre; the plotline an advertising slogan. Off to
the side, one group of professionals work together in an attempt to create a fledgling fascist state so the
authorities will arrive, stamp out the insurrection, tear down the shopping malls, then leave so the original
161 «This is clearly the same context for Frederik Pohl ‘s science fiction extrapolation, “The Tunnel Under the World”
(1955), concerning the control exercised by [corsivo dell’autore] advertisers. This is figured as a literal mechanisation
and programming: the populace of Tylterton are test-robots for advertising techniques. Ballard acknowledges Pohl’s
influence, and two stories, “The Subliminal Man” and “The Secret History of World War III” are in this tradition.” Ibid.
162 «Mastering or intervening actively in the production of volatility, on the other hand, entails manipulation of taste and
opinion, either being a fashion leader or by so saturating the market with images as to shape the volatility to particular
ends. This means, in either case, the construction of new sign systems and imagery, which is itself an important aspect
of the postmodern condition – one that needs to be considered from several different angles. To begin with, advertising
and media images have come to play a very much more integrative role in cultural practices and now assume a much
greater importance in the growth dynamics of capitalism. Advertising, moreover, is no longer built around the idea of
informing or promoting in the ordinary sense, but is increasingly geared to manipulating desires and tastes through
images that may or may not have anything to do with the product to be sold. If we stripped modern advertising of direct
reference to the three themes of money, sex, and power there would be very little left.» David Harvey, The condition of
postmodernity: an enquiry into the origins of cultural change, Malden, MA-Oxford, Blackwell, 1990, p. 287.
