fondamentale l’indifferenziazione e l’atemporalità 142 . Nonostante le sue opere più controverse
abbiano indotto qualche critico a considerarlo un autore pessimista, e perfino nichilista, che si
compiace nel descrivere violenza e alienazione, la natura più profonda del suo intento di narratore
consiste in realtà nella messa in scena della ricerca da parte dei suoi protagonisti di una
trasformazione di carattere spirituale, di una tensione verso l’alto, come nel topos del volo che
caratterizza soprattutto The Unlimited Dream Company ma anche altri testi. Lo svincolarsi dal
tempo lineare e l’approdo a una temporalità per così dire atemporale, una simultaneità di
dimensioni temporali, una sorta di eterno presente, tipico anche degli stati alterati della coscienza, è
parte di quel percorso che abbiamo definito, in termini junghiani, di individuazione o integrazione
psichica, per certi versi molto simile a quello delle filosofie religiose orientali 143 . Un percorso simile
è compiuto dal giovane Jim, il protagonista di Empire of the Sun, la cui metamorfosi è accostata da
Stephenson a una sorta di processo alchemico che porta dall’oscurità alla luce. 144
Il profondo interesse di Ballard per la scienza riflette, talvolta in modo paradossale, lo
spostamento dalla centralità dello sguardo positivista da parte delle elite culturali che ha
caratterizzato soprattutto i primi decenni del ventesimo secolo alla disillusione tipica del cittadino

Traven listens to the time-music of the quasars, retreats to his terminal beach, and consults with Kline, Coma and Xero
– the avatars of his unconscious; then he re-emerges to set out his ‘psychodramas’ and try to wrest meaning from a
world made meaningless. These heroes of Ballard’s fiction understand that the relationship between self and world is
such that taking a rationalised approach gets us nowhere; there are always reasons for and against several different plans
of action, so it is best to “listen to Heaven which breathes through us” [An adaptation of A.C. Graham’s phrase in
