prodotto che cercare di screditare Nader, incaricando alcuni investigatori privati di controllargli i
telefoni e scavare nel suo passato, e perfino ingaggiando prostitute allo scopo di farlo sorprendere in
situazioni compromettenti, ma il tutto senza ottenere alcun risultato. In una nota a margine del testo
del 1990 Ballard immagina che non siano in tanti a ricordarsi di questo personaggio. Ciò che ancora
non poteva sapere è che Nader si sarebbe presentato come candidato a tutte le elezioni presidenziali
USA dal 1996 al 2008. Ad ogni modo Ballard non ne aveva una grande opinione. Lo considerava
soltanto un opportunista che cercava di trarre vantaggio dai timori che il suo testo avrebbe potuto
suscitare nell’opinione pubblica.
Dunque, come abbiamo visto, il rapporto tra realtà e riscrittura della realtà ad opera dei
media è centrale in The Atrocity Exhibition 117 . Ballard avrebbe potuto scriverne un seguito, ma non
l’ha fatto. Ha scelto di non farlo, perché i tempi sono cambiati, e l’aura quasi sacrale che emanava
dai personaggi che hanno segnato quell’epoca è ormai irrimediabilmente perduta 118 . Ma ciò
nonostante ci ha pensato la realtà ad aggiungervi nuovi tasselli: l’assassinio di John Lennon, il
suicidio di Kurt Cobain, la morte di Lady D e perfino lo spettacolare attentato alle Twin Towers di
New York. La fusione di realtà e fiction, che sempre di più trasforma ciò che accade in eventi
spettacolari, viene sottolineata anche dal filosofo Paul Virilio, che in un suo saggio racconta come
anche gli eventi bellici subiscano un’opera di cinematografizzazione: in Vietnam è accaduto che si
deforestasse il paesaggio per permetterne una migliore resa visiva sullo schermo 119 .
