Capitolo II
SURREALISMO, CONTROCULTURA, ‘CONSIGLI PER GLI ACQUISTI’
1. Politica e mass media
Kennedy’s assassination presides over The Atrocity Exhibition, and in many ways the book is
directly inspired by his death, and represents a desperate attempt to make sense of the tragedy, with its huge
hidden agenda. The mass media created the Kennedy we know, and his death represented a tectonic shift in
the communications landscape, sending fissures deep into the popular psyche that have not yet closed 99 .
Un filo rosso lega l’assassinio di JFK all’incidente automobilistico e all’astronave esplosa
sulla rampa di lancio a Cape Kennedy:
Here [‘The Transition Area’, in “Notes Towards a Mental Breakdown”] I see the disaster on the
launch-pad at Cape Kennedy in terms of the most common dislocation of time and space the rest of us ever
know – the car crash, and in particular the most extreme auto disaster of our age, the motorcade assassination
of JFK 101 .
100 «In his examination of contemporary culture Ballard is indebted to McLuhan in one more aspect – television and
crime. Both writers consider the Kennedy murder, the first assassination on screen, to be the turning point in the history
of media. From this moment on violence entered entertainment and newsreels became a kind of violent entertainment
spreading the images of atrocities we have grown to ignore.» D. Oramus, op. cit., p. 66.
