trattano temi difficilmente ascrivibili in toto a una categoria prestabilita, sia essa morale, filosofica o
di altro tipo. Ciò detto, non va sottaciuta la diffidenza di Ballard nei confronti del postmoderno e di
ciò che gli ruota intorno, che vede come una sorta di fenomeno da baraccone, di parata circense da
non prendere troppo sul serio, nonostante, o forse proprio perché, anche la sua opera sia stata
talvolta ricompresa all’interno di questo fenomeno onnivoro, e non sempre a torto 96 . Un racconto
come “The Index” (1977) per esempio, costituito appunto da una specie di indice di un romanzo
inesistente, l’autobiografia di un tale Henry Rhodes Hamilton, una lista in ordine alfabetico di nomi
e luoghi, pare anticipare alcuni degli esiti postmodernisti 97 .
Anche Jeannette Baxter, nella sua monografia sull’opera ballardiana, critica la lettura di
Baudrillard ravvisandovi una distorsione di fondo, consistente nel considerare Crash al di fuori del
contesto in cui nasce, in maniera amorale e senza prospettiva storica 98 . In definitiva perciò
Baudrillard sembra vedere in questo romanzo soltanto ciò che vuole vedervi. Lascia sullo sfondo
tutti quegli elementi del testo che, pur essendo fondamentali nel quadro d’insieme, non si prestano a
sostenere la sua teoria sull’iperrealtà e il ruolo della fantascienza in questo contesto, portando in
primo piano ciò che invece gli serve a questo scopo.
