‘death of affect’.
«For it seems to me that Ballard renders visible the space between [corsivo dell’autore] frames, exposes the hidden
assumptions behind the secure categorizations of literature and literary judgement. These, operating dualistically
(science fiction/mainstream, popular/serious, low/high, modernist/postmodernist, literature/theory,
autobiography/fiction, and so on), all tend to find their mechanisms troubled when confronting a Ballard text. Ballard, it
might be said, is in the place of the hinge [corsivo dell’autore], the device which at once joins together and separates
two planes or surfaces. La brisure, or the hinge, is one of the many quasi-names the philosopher Jacques Derrida gives
for the point in any structural system that makes the working of the system at once possible and impossible (Of
Grammatology, [p.] 65). […]‘Does the angle between two walls has a happy ending?’ marks out the place of the angle,
the hinge, as the place from which Ballard’s texts produce their effects. […] The angle between two walls at once
allows and frustrates the literary critical distribution of texts between science fiction and mainstream, high and low,
avant-garde and popular, and […] many other categories […].» Roger Luckhurst, The Angle Between Two Walls: The
Fiction of J G Ballard, Liverpool, University Press, 1997, p. xiii.
«Coma sat down beside Karen Novotny’s body. She glanced at Tallis, who pointed to the corner. “She was standing
in the angle between the walls.” […] Soon the parallax would close, establishing the equivalent geometry of the sexual
act with the junctions of this wall and ceiling. […] it’s an interesting question – in what [corsivo dell’autore] way is
intercourse per vagina more stimulating than with this ashtray, say, or with the angle between two walls?» J. G. Ballard,
Atrocity, a cura di V. Vale e A. Juno, op. cit., “You: Coma: Marilyn Monroe”, p. 42; “The Great American Nude”, p.
«In postmodernism there is a de-hierarchization of the binary structures of high/low, serious/popular. » R. Luckhurst,
