Sun 525 . In The Drowned World le strade sono sommerse dalle acque, ma riemergono grazie al
temporaneo prosciugamento realizzato da Strangman. I loro nomi permettono ai personaggi – e al
lettore - di recuperare quella funzione di significazione andata perduta con il graduale innalzamento
del livello delle acque che hanno sommerso buona parte del pianeta, sia pure in relazione alla
problematica dell’imperialismo, che lega questo romanzo al conradiano Heart of Darkness 526 .
Shepperton è l’equivalente di un’isola, un luogo da cui Blake non riesce ad andar via, e del
quale tuttavia diviene rapidamente la figura dominante, “il console dell’isola” 527 . Tutti loro si
trovano a dover (ri)definire la propria identità. Robinson è un mercante che un naufragio scaglia su
un’isola di cui diventa il Governatore. Quando approda sull’isola Watkins si trova a perseguire
un’evoluzione spirituale che gli permetta di entrare in contatto con la Sfera. Sperduto sulla roccia in
mezzo al mare su cui il naufragio l’ha condotto Martin è soggetto a crisi allucinatorie basate sui
propri ricordi, e teme di perdere la propria identità 528 . Dopo essersi salvato dalle acque del Tamigi
Blake subisce una trasformazione radicale, da uomo a divinità pagana. A differenza di Robinson,
anche Watkins e Martin, e lo stesso Blake, ciascuno secondo la propria personale parabola
esistenziale, subiscono una radicale trasformazione, sfiorando e attraversando i territori della follia e
della metamorfosi, della violenza e dell’amore, trascendendo la propria identità naturale per
assumerne una nuova. In questo processo la realtà stessa si trasforma: «[…] reality is in the
individual mental pattern» 529 . Ciò che li accomuna è la ricerca dell’unità perduta, psichica e
spirituale.
