propria epoca 517 .
515 «At the moment of the accident Maitland’s personality splits: he is both the dying mind and its surveyor. He looks in
the rear-view mirror and: “the eyes staring back at him from the mirror were blank and unresponsive, as if he were
looking at a psychotic twin brother” [Concrete Island, p. 8]. It is his uncanny ‘twin brother’, who is sent to explore the
island and Maitland persistently looks at him from the outside: “Maitland stared at the distorted reflection of himself.
His tall figure was warped like a grotesque scarecrow, and his white-skinned face bled away in the curving contours of
the bodywork” [Concrete Island, p. 12]. The tension between the two opposite movements – towards escape and
towards death – results in a horror-like effect in the text: the motif of the return to the womb, strange recognitions,
nightmarish feelings.» Ivi, pp. 125-126.
516 «It is Concrete Island that takes […] the uncanny […] into the strange spaces of the metropolis. Concrete Island is
the shadowy double of Crash, in the very first page ostentatiously smashing through the protective barriers that had
restricted Crash’s economy. Just as Concrete Island repeats Crash by displacing its symbolic investment in circulation
and collision, so Maitland is immediately dislodged from self-identity, becoming his own double: “In the driving mirror
he examined his head … The eyes staring back at him from the mirror were blank and unresponsive, as if he were
looking at a psychotic twin brother” [Concrete Island, p. 8].» R. Luckhurst, op. cit. (1997), p. 134.
517 «There is also one more intertextual allusion in the novel – to Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan stories, popular culture
and early 20th century classics.
dei personaggi di Concrete Island] and her beast-like mute companion Proctor recall the famous pair of American pulp
fiction heroes: Tarzan and Jane. Shakespeare, Defoe and Burroughs stand for three visions of nature and exotic
wilderness: the Renaissance, the Enlightenment and the turn of the century. They, in turn, are contrasted with ‘our’ own
exoticism, the concrete jungle of urban wasteland. […]» Ivi, p. 123.
518 «[B]ut I could not go nearer, and I knew it was because I had let myself be drawn into the forest with the blooddrinking
women, and because I had slept like a dog in the hot sun.» Doris Lessing, Briefing for a descent into hell,
Londra, Jonathan Cape, 1971, p. 69.
519 Parlando delle bestie umanoidi il protagonista afferma: «[…] I understood that among these poor beasts trapped in
their frightful necessities, some sometimes snuffed this finer air, but that most did not. […] Yet some did have a light in
them.» Ivi, p.90.
