The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (1719) di Daniel Defoe, che in
William Golding.
503 «[Q] “What is the first book you remember reading?” [JGB] “Robinson Crusoe. I can still hear the waves on the
beach”.» “JG Ballard shares his literary tastes, from The Ancient Mariner to Winnie the Pooh”, in The Sunday Times’
“Bibliofile” feature, 01/02/1998 (http://www.jgballard.ca/interviews/sunday_times_1998interview.html) [Ultima visita
Travels at the same time as American comics and magazines.» D. Pringle, “J. G. Ballard’s Early Reading”
504 «The influence of Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe is apparent in the character of Maitland in Concrete Island
(1974). His car crashes through a barrier on a freeway and tumbles down an embankment, a desolate, solitary area apart
from the world. For a while he shares the space with two people already there, a hobo and a prostitute, but eventually he
is left alone. Rather than attempting to escape his dismal surroundings, he adapts to his changed circumstances.” J. W.
Hunter (a cura di), op. cit. «Concrete Island and High-Rise (1975) both have an open connexion with cultural cliché:
Robinson Crusoe and the disaster movie, the myth of solitude and the fantasy of survival. Encoded are two types of
aspiration: the escape and the long slow climb, and the certainty that both only return you to the still point from which
you began […].» David Punter, “J. G. Ballard: Alone among the murder machines”, in The hidden script: writing and
the unconscious, London, Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1985, p. 17.
505 «Concrete Island affirms again the primacy, persistence, and power of the unconscious, whose unseen energies
withstand the hegemony of the ego-mind. The forces of the unconscious, the author tells us, will abide and prevail: “he
inspected the island more carefully. Comparing it with the motorway system, he saw that it was far older than the
surrounding terrain, as if this triangular patch of waste ground had survived by the exercise of a unique guile and
persistence, and would continue to survive, unknown and disregarded, long after the motorways had collapsed into
dust.” ([Concrete Island], p. 50.» G. Stephenson, op. cit., p. 80.
