Company.
500 «The […] scene takes place in a tropicalized, apparently empty Las Vegas. Music strikes up; Wayne, McNair and
Anne enter the Sahara Hotel to find Sinatra, joined by Dean Martin and Judy Garland ending their rendition of “My
Way” […]. Wayne topples the Sinatra automaton, causing chaos: […] “Sinatra lay on his back, legs kicking, gesturing
at the ceiling” ([Hello America, p.] 127). Holographs and ‘animatronic’ robots constitute a specifically American way
of historiographic practice, according to Umberto Eco. For the past to be represented at all, it must reside in a “full scale
authentic copy”, an Absolute Fake, in which “the sign aims to be the thing, to abolish the distinction of the reference”
(Travels in Hyperreality, [p.] 6). […] [I]n doing so volatizing any distinction between model and copy […].» R.
Luckhurst, op. cit. (1997), pp. 141-142.
501 «The America of Hello America is at once the Promised Land and the Wasteland; that is, it constitutes a blighted
paradise, a promised land laid waste and under a curse. The cause of the land’s desolation lies in the failure of its
inhabitants to maintain faith in the myth, the dream of America.» G. Stephenson, op. cit., p. 124.
502 «[…] Manson represents a sort of Fisher King figure, the ruler of the Wasteland whose wound causes its infertility
and desolation. Manson’s wound is his belief in illusion, his quest for temporal power rather than for redeeming vision,
his drive toward death rather than life. Manson’s fundamental perceptual and spiritual error is that he mistakes image
for substance, external form for internal significance.» Ivi, p. 125.
