invade la realtà, interpretando, proprio come si richiede a un attore, il ruolo del Presidente degli
Stati Uniti d’America. Ruolo che non soltanto interpreta, ma incarna a tutti gli effetti: è il perfetto
simulacro dell’uomo più potente del mondo occidentale. Ballard non trascura di citare una
dichiarazione imbarazzante attribuita allo stesso Presidente, che a quanto pare non nasconde di
trarre ispirazione da un collega nel prendere le decisioni che gli competono: «Soon after the
disastrous US intervention in Lebanon, President Reagan was heard to say: “Boy, I saw Rambo last
night; now I know what to do next time» 497 .
E ancora osserva:
Soon Hollywood was behind them, as the Reagans set their eyes on the governorship of California
and, beyond that, the leading roles in the ultimate movie of them all, the presidency of the United States, in
which he would star and she would direct, with a supporting cast of European monarchs, Russian statesmen
and California millionaires. […] But perhaps the real lesson of the Reagan presidency is the sinister example
he offers to future film actors and media manipulators with presidential ambitions and all too clearly defined
ideas, and every intention of producing a thousand-year movie out of them 498 .

Un altro passo in questa direzione è rappresentato dalla figura del Presidente Charles
Manson in Hello America (1981). Nei primi decenni del ventiduesimo secolo una sorta di doppio di
Manson, uno squilibrato che si autoproclama Presidente degli USA in uno scenario in cui il paese è
stato abbandonato dalla quasi totalità dei suoi abitanti, sceglie di ribattezzarsi come il famigerato
capo della cosiddetta Manson Family, alla ribalta dei media negli anni Sessanta per l’efferato
omicidio dell’attrice Sharon Tate, ex-moglie del regista Roman Polanski, e tuttora in prigione.
L’uno e l’altro incarnano un archetipo americano, il lato oscuro del sogno americano 499 . Il suo exsocio
ha costruito un piccolo esercito di repliche robotiche dei presidenti precedenti, ma anche una
ricostruzione di Las Vegas con personaggi quali Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Judy Garland, dando
