Pamela Zoline, nelle short stories, rispettivamente, “Entropy” (1960) e “The Heat Death of the
Universe” (1967).
As entropy is akin to chaos, the media in spreading random and incomplete messages accelerate the
end: that is why Traven is so obsessed by them. This sinister, ‘pornographic’ discourse is for him the
language of science, which isolates objects preserving their identities. The opposite of science is surrealism
The Atrocity Exhibition (1969), uscito in America come Love and Napalm: Export USA per
«The text is divided into paragraphs which have their own titles and are grouped into fifteen chapters. The chapters
might well function as separate short stories: they are composed of loosely connected images and situations and,
moreover, certain phrases, titles and motifs are constantly repeated, ones which give the text an obsessive character.
Ballard himself used to call these chapters ‘condensed novels’: he claimed that they are standard novels with the
redundant elements (such as traditional plot, characterization of protagonists, dialogues, digressions and descriptions)
cut off. What remains is the very essence, the condensation of his [sic] meanings which are very often presented in
purely visual terms.» Ivi, p. 172.
