può salire verso l’alto, probabilmente per ricongiungersi con la propria essenza spirituale originaria.
Il percorso di Blake, dopo quella in uccello e pesce prevede un’altra metamorfosi:
trasformato in cervo si lancia al galoppo alla volta di Miriam, dopo aver montato le femmine del
branco in cui si è imbattuto. Ma tra loro si frappone ancora l’Altro:
Then, as I approached the dead elms, a figure stepped from the dark bracken and barred my path. For
a moment I saw the dead pilot in his ragged flying suit, his skull-like face a crazed lantern. He had come
ashore to find me, able to walk no further than these skeletal trees. He blundered through the deep ferns, a
gloved hand raised as if asking who had left him in the drowned aircraft 432 .
Nell’omonimo documentario (1983) di Sam Scoggings, Ballard afferma esplicitamente che
il protagonista di The Unlimited Dream Company riemerge dal fiume grazie alla forza della propria
immaginazione, trasformando successivamente il paesaggio di Shepperton in un giardino edenico.
Ciò che gli scrittori fanno, e lui stesso in particolare, è di trasformare, tramite un grande sforzo
dell’immaginazione, la monotona realtà quotidiana in una sorta di ‘compagnia del sogno illimitato’.
Immaginazione è una parola chiave per William Blake, al punto da coincidere con la vita stessa
dell’uomo 433 . Come insegna il surrealismo, il Blake del romanzo trasforma il sogno in realtà
attraverso il potere dell’immaginazione. Riflettendo su ciò che gli è accaduto, il sopravvissuto
all’annegamento ne trae come conseguenza che il suo compito è di essere il salvatore degli abitanti
di Shepperton:
The unseen powers who had saved me from the aircraft had in turn charged me to save these men
and women from their lives in this small town and the limits imposed on their spirits by their minds and
bodies. In some way my escape from the Cessna, whose drowned wraith I could see in the dark water below
the window, had gained me entry to the real world that waited behind the shutter of every flower and feather,
every leaf and child. My dreams of flying as a bird among birds, of swimming as a fish among fish, were not
dreams but the reality of which this house, this small town and its inhabitants were themselves the
consequential dream 434 .
