Shepperton e i suoi abitanti.
fin dall’inizio.
405 «[…] the real apocalypse comes, not with the vision of a city or a kingdom, which would still be external, but with
the identification of the city and kingdom with one’s own body. But when this happens the external aspect of the
unfallen world becomes a void, and the analogy of the unfallen world, or body of Jesus, would then be the Creator alone
in nothing whom we meet on page one of all orthodox cosmogonies.» N. Frye, op. cit., p. 431.
406 «Let us begin by registering Stanley’s claim that there were two of him, each existing simultaneously in a different
life. One - his ‘real’ life - he referred to as his down-to-earth or secular life. The other - his creative life - he called his
up-in-heaven life, or his life of special meaningfulness. The two lives can be thought of as corresponding to the terms
‘present’ and ‘timeless’ […]. The terms physical and metaphysical are used here in the same meaning, the metaphysical
often being expressed by Stanley in the metaphorical terms of biblical paradigm or iconography.» Kenneth Pople, “The
Art and Vision of Stanley Spencer” (http://www.stanleyspencer.co.uk) [Ultima visita 10/03/2011].
407 «Spencer was fascinated by Paul Gaugin’s paintings of Biblical scenes in then modern-day settings, and he began to
think about using Cookham in the same manner, as he still very much loved his birthplace and its magical small-town
landscape. One of Spencer’s works done shortly after called The Nativity would place this holy event in Cookham,
while his John Donne Arriving in Heaven was included in another Post-Impressionist exhibit which also featured Pablo
Picasso and Henri Matisse. Spencer was additionally influenced by the Italian Renaissance artist Giotto.» Meg Nola,
408 «Circles often appear in unexpected connections in the mysterious compositions of the British artist Paul Nash. In
the primeval solitude of his landscape Event on the Downs, a ball lies in the right foreground. Though it is apparently a
tennis ball, the design on its surface forms the Tai-gi-tu, the Chinese symbol of eternity; thus it opens up a new
dimension in the loneliness of the landscape. Something similar happens in Nash’s Landscape from a Dream. Balls are
rolling out of sight in an infinitely wide mirrored landscape with a huge sun visible on the horizon. Another ball lies in
the foreground, in front of the roughly square mirror.» A. Jaffé, “Symbolism in the visual arts”, in C. G. Jung, op. cit.,
