BICICLETTA
BICYCLE ON A WIRE
A bicycle suspended on a wire 6 metres high will allow
you to pedal for 23 metres balanced on a steel rope.
The stability of the bicycle is assured by the fact
that the centre of gravity is to be found underneath
the steel rope. To build a bicycle on a rope which is
stable, nothing is left to chance: in fact, it is necessary
to calculate the geometric point in which you
can imagine the whole mass is concentrated. This
is the centre of gravity, or barycentre, and it should
be found underneath the steel rope. Every object of
machine built by man, to be functional, has to have
its own “equilibrium”. Think of a motor composed of
different parts, some moving, that have to work together
without getting in the way of each other...
Even the machine-man has invented a functional
technology for equilibrium, which depends in a relevant
way on the vestibular component of our inner
ear, where there are three semi circular channels -
which give information on the position of the head
in space - and the otology system, which gives information
on gravity and on the linear acceleration of
the body in the horizontal sense (ahead-behind, like
cavo.
in auto) e verticale (alto-basso, come in ascensore). Queste
Andare in bicicletta
a sinistra.
in the acceleration in a car) and vertical (high-low,
like in a lift). This information is transmitted to the
brain and intervenes in complex mechanisms when
executing voluntary movements.
Riding a bicycle without losing balance is therefore
a complex action, which we had to learn integrating
the sensorial and moving information: a slight
movement of the bicycle-cyclist system to the right
is compensated by the shift (automatic) to the left
centre of gravity.
