INDEX SCIENTIFIC STUDIES
150
1 Global System for Mobile Communication, it is the second generation
of cellular phones. The first was of the analogical type. Data transmission
is possible at a speed of 9.6-14.4 Kbit/sec.
2 General Packet Radio Service, it is the transition technology between
GSM and UMTS. Is characterised by a constant connection in the Web,
in practice the user may telephone and navigate at the same time at a
speed which can reach a maximum of 140.8 Kbit/sec.
3 Universal Mobile Telecommunications System represents the third generation
of cellular phones. Allows an operational speed which, theoretically,
can reach 1920 Kbit/sec.
4 Wireless Fidelity is the commercial name of the local Webs without
wires (WLAN) based on specific IEEE 802.11. Transmission speed of the
standard IEEE 802.11 in version “b” reaches 11 Mbit/sec while the version
“g” can reach 54 Mbit/sec.
5 Familiar term to indicate the Internet Web, used by Tim Berners-Lee,
the researcher who, in 1990, at CERN (www.cern.ch), invented the World
Wide Web in the form used today.
6 The term indicates the inequality in the possibility of access and use of
the technologies of the so-called information society.
7 The term cyberpunk is born from the current literary homonymy that
has in William Gibson, author of Neuromancer (Gibson 1984), one of
the major exponent. Many groups of the Internet underground have
in this literature their principal reference and they have borrowed the
neologism and manner of expression to create their real own virtual
community.
8 The means of interaction man-machine can reach levels of simulation
in the real world that are extremely credible but only with particular
hardware and software configuration. The term virtual immersionable
reality indicates the use of equipment which isolates the subject from
the real world immersing them in the virtual through the use of stereoscope
visors, gloves or whole jumpsuits with sensors in order to reveal
the position and movement of those who wear it.
9 Net citizen, the inhabitants of the Web.
10 Literally: execution of multiple tasks.
Media” at the Politecnico of Turin
