especially in the field of telecommunications, transport, and health. And
we will see how all these technologies form a network, a system.
The passage from analogical to digital allowed the entire machine of the
world telecommunications to use the same simple alphabet made up of
only two symbols, zero and one, we refer to words, sounds and images.
And the digital network by now goes from satellites to mobile phones,
to intelligent labels; to local WiFi networks which connect computers
together without the bother of wires. Soon every existing object will
have an address; the refrigerator could communicate with a packet of
butter and advise us that it is almost near the expiry date, the washing
machine will choose the washing programme gathering information
from the intelligent labels sewn on linens. Domotics will help us to control
our houses, make them more comfortable, and save energy.
As far as mobility is concerned even this starts to make a system not
only for that which concerns the infrastructure and the various means
of transport but also with the individual users: the Telepass is the first
timid application of this tendency. The transport system, then, must
always bear the environment in mind: for this reason “Around the future”,
apart from showing how the means of transport are by now conceived
in function of recycling materials, dedicates extensive space to the
technology of hydrogen, the cleanest possible today. We will see as well,
how many inventions are “copied” from nature.
Another trend of “Around the future” is made up of the technology at
the service of health, and in particular to the diagnostic machines which
allow you to always look better in a non invasive manner inside the human
body. A recent research conducted by 225 specialists has identified
the 10 most important medical innovations of the last 25 years: among
these is the magnetic resonance stands out, the CAT. Angioplasty with
the small ball, mammography, the coronary by pass, the hip and knee
surgery. It is not by chance that the Nobel for Medicine in 2003 was
awarded to Paul Lauterbur and Peter Mansfield for their work which
permitted refining magnetic resonance as a diagnostic instrument in
an amazing manner. With the by now well tested game conception,
experimental and immersed, the Esperimenta06 exhibition “Around the
future” proposes both simple and important cultural objectives. The first
is that of making us aware of the functioning of machines which mostly
are only “black boxes” of mysterious contents. To obtain this each time
it was possible it was tried to bring to light the basic science which is
at the origin of the technologies, making the fundamental value of pure
knowledge understood, indispensable in itself, but also to reach practical,
useful and remunerative applications. Another objective is that of
developing a critical and balanced attitude towards modern technology:
without excessive exaltation but also without prejudice and irrational
demon phobia, we realise how much the modern technologies can contribute
to improving the quality of life. In following this path, finally,
the visitor will discover the importance of scientific culture and connect
it to the fabric of the centres of research and of the high technology
companies of our territory. Fabric to which is entrusted the economic,
industrial and occupational revival of Turin and Piedmont.
