Mesagne è una città dalle tante sfaccettature 

e dalle tante ricchezze. Città messapica, 

città mariana, città salentina, e ancora 

potremmo associarle numerosi aggettivi. 

Raccontare le sue qualità e le sue tradizioni, 

vuol dire tener conto delle risorse conservate 

nel centro storico, vuol dire conoscere 

l’ospitalità della sua gente ma anche la cultura 

enogastronomica e agroalimentare. 

A tutto ciò si associa oggi uno spirito 

moderno proteso allo sviluppo e alla crescita 

del territorio. Mesagne, è protagonista della 

contemporaneità, offre una serie di strutture 

ricettive, un’offerta turistica variegata, alla 

quale giova la vicinanza all’aereoporto di 

Brindisi e al nostro meraviglioso mare. La 

volontà di puntare sullo sviluppo del turismo 

e sul marketing territoriale, ci spinge a 

considerare ogni fattore come un tassello di 

un’offerta complessiva rivolta sia al cittadino 

che al potenziale visitatore. E per questo 

che una guida a disposizione del turista può

M esagne is a town with many facets and 

many treasures. Messapic town, Marian 

town, town of Salento, and we could link it with 

many other adjectives. Telling its qualities and 

its traditions means to consider the resources 

guarded in the old-town, it means to know the 

hospitality of its people, but also its wine and 

food culture. 

A modern spirit is associated today to these 

aspects, aimed to the development and 

the growth of the territory. Mesagne is the 

protagonist of the modernity, it offers lots of 

receptive structures, a variegated tourist offer, 

which makes use of the closeness of the airport 

of Brindisi and of our wonderful sea. The desire 

to count on the tourist development and on 

the territorial marketing, let us consider each 

aspect as a plug of a total offer directed to the 

town dweller and to the potential visitor. For 

this reason, a guide at tourist’s disposal can be 

useful to enrich the quality of the urban offer.

Situata a 15 km da Brindisi, lungo 

l'antica via Appia, Mesagne è una fra le 

città più popolose e grandi del Salento. 

La sua eleganza e la sua semplicità 

rendono la sua storia ricca di particolari 

avvincenti ed emozionanti. 

Le campagne suggestive che circondano 

questa cittadina, piene di ulivi secolari e 

vigneti prosperosi, le donano i colori, 

i profumi e i sapori tipici di questa terra. 

Tutte queste caratteristiche la portano ad 

essere una tra le mete salentine più ambite 

dai turisti. 

S ituated 15 km away from Brindisi, 

along the ancient Via Appia, Mesagne 

is one of the biggest and most populated 

towns of Salento. Its elegance and 

its simpleness make its history full of 

enthralling and exciting details. 

The evocative countrysides surrounding 

this small town, full of centuries-old olive 

trees and flourishing vineyards, give it the 

typical colours, fragrances and flavours of 

this land.All these characteristics lead it to 

be one of the most desired destinations of 

Salento among tourists.

Il nome "Mesagne" indica la posizione strategica 

della città situata a metà strada tra Oria, uno dei 

maggiori centri del Salento del XV secolo, e Brindisi, 

unica via di comunicazione marittima dell'epoca. 

Conosciuta come centro messapico, la cittadina fiorisce 

realmente tra il 1500 e il 1600 grazie a feudatari, nobili e clero. 

La caratteristica di questa città è che all'epoca era circondata 

da mura e vi si poteva accedere tramite due porte, "Porta 

Grande" detta anche "Porta Napoli" e "Porta Piccola", a cui 

successivamente fu aggiunta una terza porta, che prese il 

nome di "Porta Nuova". 

The name “Mesagne” shows the strategic position 

of the town situated between Oria, one of the 

major centres of Salento during the XVth century, and 

Brindisi, the only mean of maritime communication of the 

time. Known as a messapic centre, the small town actually 

flourishes between 1500 and 1600 thanks to feudal lords, 

nobles and clergy. The characteristic of this town is the 

fact that, at the time, it was surrounded by walls and it was 

accessible by means of two gates, “Porta Grande” also called 

“Porta Napoli” and “Porta Piccola”, to whom a third gate, 

called “Porta Nuova”, was added later.

old town, it is possible to find 

some tracks of that time: for 

example, the icon of Piazza 

Criscuolo is the hand that 

holds tight a cross in a fist, 

which was used to hang the 

brigands’ heads, caught and 

sentenced to death.

Mesagne è conosciuta anche come la “città 

delle 50 chiese”, nome attribuitole per le 

numerose chiese presenti, simbolo di una forte 

religiosità. 

Nel cuore dell’antica città, sorge imponente la chiesa 

matrice, dedicata a tutti i Santi. Questo prestigioso 

pezzo di storia mesagnese è un autentico gioiello 

barocco che si ispira alla raffinatezza dei dettagli e 

delle forme architettoniche dell’esperienza leccese. 

Essa venne edificata su un’altra chiesa bizantina 

dedicata a San Nicola Vetere e a testimonianza 

di questo è rimasta la signorile cripta posta al di 

sotto dell’altare maggiore. A seguito del terremoto 

avvenuto nel 1743, la chiesa matrice subì seri 

danni. Una leggenda popolare narra che, proprio 

durante il terremoto, la punta del campanile si 

congiunse, per opera della Vergine del Carmelo 

protettrice della città, con la punta dell’orologio 

posto sulla biblioteca comunale di fronte alla 

chiesa e questo fenomeno salvò la cittadina dal 

crollo totale del centro storico. 

All’esterno delle antiche mura difensive della 

città sorgono altri importanti edifici religiosi, meta 

di numerosi pellegrinaggi provenienti da tutto 

il mondo. Tra i più importanti possiamo citare la 

Chiesa di Materdomini che dona alla cittadina 

l’imponente cupola diventata quasi un simbolo, la 

Chiesa del Carmine sorta sull’ex convento dei frati 

carmelitani, attualmente riconosciuta dal Vaticano 

come Basilica Minore, la Chiesa dell’Immacolata 

dove i mesagnesi pregavano e supplicavano la 

Vergine affinché proteggesse la città in tempo di 

terremoti e castighi divini, ed ancora la Chiesa di 

Santa Maria in Betlemme, San Giuseppe artigiano, 

San Pio e numerose chiesette sconsacrate, 

nonché un ex convento diventato carcere e 

utilizzato attualmente come centro per la ricerca 

medica. 

M esagne is also known as the “town of the 

50 churches”, name given because of the 

numerous present churches, symbol of a strong 

religiousness. 

In the heart of the old town, the Mother Church 

rises impressive, dedicated to all Saints. 

This prestigious bit of history of Mesagne is an 

authentic baroque jewel, inspired by the refinement 

of details and architectural shapes of the experience 

of Lecce. It was built on another byzantine church 

devoted to San Nicola Vetere and its proof is the 

refined crypt placed below the high altar. After the 

earthquake of 1743, the Mother Church suffered 

serious damages. A popular myth tells that, during 

the earthquake, the bell tower top joined the clock 

top of the town library opposite the church, thanks 

to the Vergine of Carmelo, patron of the town and 

this phenomenon saved the small town from the 

total collapse of the old town. 

On the outside of the ancient defensive walls of 

the town, some other important religious buildings 

rise, destination of numerous pilgrimages from 

all the world. Among the most important ones, 

we can cite the Materdomini Church which gives 

the impressive dome to the small town, nearly 

a symbol, the Carmine Church risen on the ex 

monastery of the carmelite monks, currently 

recognized by the Vatican as Minor Basilica, 

the Immacolata Church where the city dwellers 

prayed and implored the Virgin in order to protect 

the town from the earthquakes and the divine 

punishments, and the churches of Santa Maria in 

Betlemme, San Giuseppe Artigiano, San Pio and 

some other little deconsecrated churches, as well 

as an ex monastery become a prison and used at 

the moment as the centre for the medical research.

Negli ultimi anni, l’agricoltura mesagnese ha subito un notevole 

cambiamento, sia per quanto riguarda le tecniche di 

coltivazione, sia per la richiesta del mercato generale. 

Grazie all’eccellenza che contraddistingue le aziende agricole 

del territorio, molti prodotti vengono distribuiti sul mercato 

nazionale ed internazionale.

suffered a remarkable change, both in what concerns 

the technique of cultivation and for the demand of the 

general market. 

Thanks to the excellence that marks the commercial 

farms of the territory, many products are distributed 

on the national and international market.

of olive trees cover 

our countrysides. From the 

fruit of these trees springs 

the most vintage oil that is 

appreciated all around the 

world for its colour and its 

intense and strong taste. 

Thanks to our “green gold”, 

lots of awards were received, 

among which the DOP “Terra 

d’Otranto” certificate and 

the award of Gran Menzione 

during the Vinitaly 2011 

received by some olive 

growers of Mesagne for the 

fruity and light extra virgin 

olive oil.

Due vini, questi, i quali 

si contendono la scena

accompagnamento a carni 

rosse, il negramaro e la 

malvasia deliziano il palato 

sia dei migliori intenditori 

sia di coloro che il vino lo 

gustano per passione. 

When we talk about wine, 

Mesagne is in the first 

place for the production of 

negramaro and malvasia, 

full-bodied and structured 

red wines. These two kinds 

of wine are in competition 

with the well-known primitivo, 

produced in our countrysides 

but in a smaller quantity. 

Used with red meats, 

negramaro and malvasia 

delight the palate of the 

best experts and of those 

who enjoy the wine just for 

passion.

received lots of awards among

of this product, become in 

little time, the main centre of 

the agricultural economy of 

Mesagne.

agro-alimentare, che si è 

specializzata nella lavorazione

prodotti, così genuini da rendere 

il risultato finale apprezzato

lavorazione delle materie 

prime, infatti, le industrie agroalimentari 

si sono specializzate 

nell'esportazione di prodotti 

finiti ricercati, ormai, anche 

all'estero. Si sono, inoltre, 

specializzate, sempre più negli 

anni, nella lavorazione del 

carciofo, affinando le tecniche 

di produzione e creando nuove 

varietà di prodotto. è proprio 

grazie a questo costante lavoro 

che le industrie mesagnesi 

sono riuscite ad esportare il 

carciofo come prodotto finito 

anche in America e in Giappone. 

L'industria agro-alimentare però 

non è l'unica branca presente 

nella città di Mesagne; l'intera 

zona P.I.P., infatti, è dedicata 

all'industria di specializzazione, 

che produce importanti pezzi 

nautici e aeronautici. Tali industrie 

sono impegnate principalmente 

nel creare, costruire, ottimizzare 

e potenziare numerosi velivoli 

utilizzati sia in ambito civile che

which is the main source 

of support of the economy of 

Mesagne, in the small town there 

has been the development of the 

food and agriculture industry, 

specialized in the working of 

raw materials including the 

artichoke and some kinds of 

fruit and vegetables. The motive 

power of these industries is the 

quality of their products, so 

natural that they make the final 

result appreciated in the whole 

peninsula. Besides the working 

of raw materials, in fact, the 

food and agriculture industries 

specialized in the export of 

finished products, in great 

demand abroad. Moreover, they 

specialized, more and more 

through the years, in the working 

of the artichoke, refining the 

techniques of production and 

creating new kinds of product. 

It is just thanks to this constant 

work that the industries of 

Mesagne succeeded in the 

exportation of the artichoke as a 

finished product in America and 

in Japan, too. But, the food and 

agriculture industry is not the 

only branch present in the town 

of Mesagne: the whole P.I.P. 

area, in fact, is dedicated to the 

specialization industry, which 

produces important nautical 

and aeronautical pieces. These 

industries are mainly engaged 

in the creation, construction, 

optimization and development 

of lots of aircrafts, used both in

development of Mesagne, 

a growing interest for these 

activities emerged, from 

the public and the private

understand the technological 

innovation as one of the main 

reasons of the growth and the

Come nell'industria, nel commercio e nella 

ricerca, l'eccellenza a Mesagne è spesso 

associata a giovani promesse dello sport, sia in 

ambito nazionale che internazionale. Il basket 

mesagnese è riusciuto a raggiungere grandi livelli 

puntando sempre più sulla forza della scuola 

basket capace di temprare possibili campioni. 

Sulla stessa scia ci sono stati lo sviluppo del volley, 

soprattutto quello femminile, e del tennis. 

Grande orgoglio hanno portato i giovani del 

Taekwondo con la loro partecipazione alle 

Olimpiadi. Tanti sono ancora gli sport che vengono 

praticati e che presto daranno alla città nuove 

soddisfazioni.

international area. The basketball team of the town 

has been able to achieve high levels counting, more 

and more, on the strength of the basketball school, 

able to toughen some possible champions. On the 

same wave, there has been the development of 

volleyball, in particular the women’s one, and that 

of tennis. The young of Taekwondo have brought 

great pride with their participation to the Olympics. 

There are many sports that are played and that will 

give new satisfactions to the town early.

Un punto cruciale dell'attuale economia 

mesagnese è l'attività turistico-ricettiva, che 

nell'arco degli ultimi anni si è molto sviluppata 

e diversificata. Le strutture della città si sono

territorio per far sì che il turista conosca le bellezze
