provided in N Engl J Med 1997;336:309-15. The first six Authors<br />
must be in<strong>di</strong>cated, followed by et al. Journals should be cited accor<strong>di</strong>ng<br />
to the abbreviations reported on Index Me<strong>di</strong>cus.<br />

• All units of measurement should be reported in the metric system in<br />
the terms of the International System of Units (SI), reporting in<br />
parentheses, if necessary, the same data in conventional units.<br />
• Abbreviations should be avoided unless they are standard units of<br />
measurement. The full term for which an abbreviation stands should<br />
precede its first use in the text.<br />
• Drugs should be referred to by their chemical name; the commercial<br />
name should be used only when absolutely unavoidable (capitalizing<br />
the first letter of the product name).<br />
• If a figure or a text has been published, acknowledge the original<br />
source and submit written permission from the copyright holder to<br />
reproduce the material. Permissions are required irrespective of<br />
authorship or publisher, except for documents in public domain.<br />
• A statement for copyright assignment to the journal will be included<br />
in the proofs and must be signed by the Author.<br />
• Acknowledgements and the citation of any grants or other forms of<br />
financial support should be provided after the bibliography.<br />
• Notes to the text, in<strong>di</strong>cated by an asterisks or similar symbols, should<br />
appear at the bottom of the relevant page.<br />
• Mathematical terms and formulae, abbreviations, and units of measure<br />
should conform to the standards set out in Science<br />
1954;120:1078.<br />
• Tables (in 3 copies) must be limited in number (the same data should<br />
not be presented twice, in both the text and tables), typewritten one<br />
to a page, and numbered consecutively with Roman numbers. In the<br />
text and legend of the tables, Authors must use, in the exact order, the<br />
following symbols: *, †, ‡, , **, ††, ‡‡ …<br />
• Figures in the form of photographs must be provided in 3 original<br />
copies, labelled and numbered on the back, with the in<strong>di</strong>cation of the<br />
Author, of the title of the article and of the top of the picture.<br />
• Please check the section devoted to specific instructions for the number<br />
of questions to provide.<br />
Specific instructions for the various categories of papers<br />
1. E<strong>di</strong>torials (written on the invitation of the E<strong>di</strong>tor or a member of the<br />
E<strong>di</strong>torial Board) are brief <strong>di</strong>scussions of the general and practical<br />
aspects of topics of current interest. They should be written in Italian<br />
or English; no abstract is necessary.<br />
2. Original articles represent reports of new and original work, or<br />
descriptions of a consolidated body of experience (even if not entirely<br />
original) in a given field. Due to the educational mission of the<br />
journal, original article should devote part of the Introduction and<br />
Discussion sections to the state-of-the-art on the subject. 3 multiplechoice<br />
questions should be included (each of them with 3 <strong>di</strong>fferent<br />
answers, the right one in bold). The text must be sub-<strong>di</strong>vided into the<br />
following sections: Introduction, Materials and methods, Results,<br />
Discussion, and Conclusions. The text must not exceed 15 typewrit-<br />
ten pages, pictures, bibliography and summary included (legend of<br />
figures and tables apart). The abstract, must be less than 250 words<br />
and must be sub<strong>di</strong>vided into the following sections: Objective(s),<br />
Method(s), Results, Conclusion(s) (see “General instructions for<br />
Authors”).<br />
3. Update articles may be submitted for consideration by authors, or<br />
may be written on the invitation of the E<strong>di</strong>tor. They should not<br />
exceed 20 typewritten pages, inclu<strong>di</strong>ng the bibliography, tables, and<br />
figures (but not inclu<strong>di</strong>ng the legends). Abstract must be less than<br />
200 words. 3 groups of 3-5 multiple-choice questions should be<br />
included (each of them with 3 <strong>di</strong>fferent answers, the right one in<br />
bold). The first group after 1/3 of the article; the second at the half<br />
of the article, the last at the end of the article.<br />
4. Evidence-based-me<strong>di</strong>cine education articles: written on the invitation<br />
of the E<strong>di</strong>tor or a member of the E<strong>di</strong>torial Board. 3 groups of 3-<br />
5 multiple-choice questions should be included (each of them with 3<br />
<strong>di</strong>fferent answers, the right one in bold). The first group after 1/3 of<br />
the article; the second at the half of the article, the last at the end of<br />
the article.<br />
5. Case reports will be considered for publication only if they describe<br />
very rare cases or are of particular <strong>di</strong>dactic interest. The presentation<br />
should include a clear exposition of the case and a <strong>di</strong>scussion of the<br />
<strong>di</strong>fferential <strong>di</strong>agnosis. The text must be concise (less than three<br />
pages), and furnished with no more than 1 or 2 figures or tables, and<br />
with a few essential bibliographic references. 3-5 multiple-choice<br />
questions should be included (each of them with 3 <strong>di</strong>fferent answers,<br />
the right one in bold).<br />
7. Letters to the E<strong>di</strong>tor may address problems of current interest in the<br />
area of andrology, or may comment on articles that have recently<br />
appeared in the journal. In the latter case, the letter will be sent to the<br />
authors of the article in question and their eventual reply will be<br />
published together with the letter. Letters to the e<strong>di</strong>tor should be<br />
written in Italian, must not exceed 2 typewritten pages, and must be<br />
furnished with a title.<br />
8. Reviews of books. The journal reserves the right to publish reviews<br />
(either unsolicited or written on the invitation of the E<strong>di</strong>tor) of<br />
books. The text should be in Italian, and should not exceed 1 to 2<br />
typewritten pages.<br />
Memorandum for Authors<br />
The Authors should send a letter accompanying their article containing<br />
a declaration to the effect that the work being submitted is original and<br />
that copyright is transferred to the publisher; moreover, if necessary, the<br />
Authors should state that informed consent on the part of the patients<br />
has been obtained for their participation in the experiments and/or for<br />
publication of photographs.<br />
Title, key-words, summary, captions in Italian and English.<br />
