of the landscape around, where the
perfect hint for the next piece may
just be at a bus stop. Maiwald writes
for German gourmet and golf
players, a quite demanding public,
in a steady quest for good food,
delicious wines and the perfect golf
green. No wonder that Puglia struck
his readers as much as it impressed
him.
The Pino Pascali Museum
by Stefania Di Mitrio
The Pino Pascali museum foundation
finally found a new home, with a
breathtaking sea view, in an historic
building of Polignano a Mare, Pascali’s
hometown near Bari. The recent
inauguration marked an important
milestone for the memory of Pascali,
one of the most innovative artists
Italy had over the last half century.
Since 1998, when curators Achille
Bonito Oliva and Pietro Marino
launched the Pascali name across the
international scene, quite a lot has
been made to keep his memory and
discover his oeuvres. As an acclaimed
representative of the so called
“poor” art, in good company with
Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz, Eliseo
Mattiacci and Sergio Lombardo,
Pascali was quite innovative also if
compared with the Sixties Pop Art
movement.
No wonder Pascali works are now
showcased in museums like the
Tate Modern in London, the Centre
Pompidou in Paris, the Mumok in
Vienna, and the Modern Art Museum
in Osaka.
St. Peter’s Church in Bari
by Maria Rosaria Depalo
Once there was a convent… this
may well be the start of story of the
church of St. Peter in Bari, an archaeological
area recently brought to
new life at the heart of the old town
in Bari. The area has undergone very
lengthy and particular restoration
works, and the story of the whole
surrounding is quite unusual. Back
in 1969 the sea view was obstructed
by an old convent, a huge building
turned into a hospital and half destroyed
in 1943, when the Germans
bombed Bari, and again in 1945,
when the British ship Charles Henderson
exploded in the harbor. Now,
after almost 70 years, the beautiful
St. Peter church and its piazza are
back to life.
Asturias
by Giusy Petruzzelli
Asturias is also known as the ‘Spanish
Switzerland ‘ or ‘Green Spain’
due to its lush countryside and high
mountainous areas. There are indeed
high mountainous areas: the Picos
de Europa, the Bosque Atlántico
(the Atlantic forest), the Cordillera
Cantábrica mountains and many
valleys and coastal areas stretching
345 kms. Asturias is separated from
Castilla-León by the mountain range
known as the Cordillera Cantábrica.
The Asturian coastline is made up of
open beaches and steep cliffs with
pretty coves. The Tina Menor, Ribadesella,
Villaviciosa, Avilés, Pravía, Eo,
Navía rivers all flow into the Cantabrican
sea. Asturias vegetation varies
widely, in the area characterized by
its valleys and fast flowing rivers in
the north of the province there are
meadows and forests consisting of
oak, beech, walnut and lime trees
and there are lots of pastures where
animals graze. This is where the ‘the
Picos de Europa’ are situated, some
say they are one of nature’s natural
wonders shared by both Asturias and
Cantabria alike. El Naranjo de Bulnes,
Torre Carredo, Peña Santa are
64
just some of the summits here. For
those who are fans of skiing there
are some excellent ski slopes such
as: Valgrande-Pajares which is just
75 kms from Oviedo in the Cordillera
Cantábrica mountain range.
Oviedo, the capital, is the administrative,
commercial and political center
of the province. There are 2 other
important cities ,Gijón, which has the
largest number of inhabitants and is
the most industrial part of the province
as well as being a tourist center.
Avilés is the third largest city in
Asturias. Because of its geographical
position pilgrims making their way to
Santiago de Compostela pass through
this province which forms part of
the Camino de Santiago, making it
an important tourist destination, due
to its historical and artistic heritage
but also for its excellent gastronomy.
Eat out while staying home
by Alessandra Nenna
In a world where everyone can get
everywhere just with a click, and
where “real time” is the buzzword
for just about anything, including
food, eating out can be quite a new
adventure when experienced…, well,
at home.
The HommeFood, Gnammo and
Newgusto phenomena are thus simply
explained: why take the fuss of
reserving a good restaurant, spend
time searching an adequate menu
and face the city traffic when you can
call your chef friend and have she
cater all this in your dining room?
And there is more: you can return
the favor at her place!
These new trends are becoming
quite successful in Puglia thanks to
the recent awareness of our Region
as one of the most gifted in terms
of certified food and wines, not to
forget our famous olive oils.
