My Sicily
Sicily
in my heart
by Luigi Ferro
Maria Grazia Cucinotta
relates her Sicily. And
does so with the passion
of a true lover of this
wonderful land.
The phone-call is
difficult, the line
keeps dropping
because there’s
not much field
in the zone. But
Maria Grazia
Cucinotta keeps
calling back. She is
there to relate her Sicily and doesn’t want
to miss the opportunity. The actress is a
world-famous symbol of Mediterranean
beauty, but she has decided to leave
this role, becoming
first a producer and
then the director of a
documentary, for she
has close links with her
land and is proud of
her origins.
She lived in the
island till she was 18, when she moved to
Milan where her career took off. Model,
mannequin and then actress. Always with
Sicily in her heart.
What were your early years like?
“My birth in Sicily gave me a wonderful
childhood, it was like we were billionaires
even though really we were poor. Because
Sicily makes you rich even if you’ve got
nothing. From Caribbean-style sea to hills
and the mountains of Etna. A stupendous
landscape that I’m actually getting to know
better now than when I was young”.
What are the places of your heart?
“My thoughts go to Messina, of course, but
also to the Aeolian Islands, our first stoppingplace
when we set out to discover the world.
But I also remember crossing the Straits.
The time we took the ferry and went to the
