The
flavour
of fire
Etna, a wine-growing
landscape unique in the
world. Terraces, small
trees, wine-presses
and farmhouses make
a fascinating display
and offer wines,
fruit and many other
products of the
finest quality.
by Guido Montaldo
Etna, or “Iddu”, as it is affectionately known
by those living on its slopes, dominates
one of the Sicilian territories in the heart
of the Mediterranean. Its intriguing history,
its powerful landscapes and the warmth of
its people have enchanted travellers of all
ages. Travellers enthralled by the fruits of
this generous island.
One of these fruits is its wines, of which one
of the finest grows on the slopes of Etna.
The volcano is lord and master. It gives much, with the richness of
its terrains and the variability of its climate, fundamental elements
for creating prestigious wines. But it can take away everything in
a single night, as happened in 1981, when its lava flowed into the
village of Randazzo, destroying hectares and hectares of vineyards
at a single stroke.
