Terroir
DOC
Sicilia
by Guido Montaldo
The new regional
designated origin covers
the entire Region.
DOC Sicilia, or
a designated
origin covering
the entire
region. Why?
To gain
recognition for
Sicilian wines,
to strengthen
their identity, improve their quality, image
and market position. DOC Sicilia, which
can be applied for the first time to wines
from the 2012 harvest, is therefore an
opportunity to improve
the quality of the wines
and to protect their
typical features. Among
the most enthusiastic
supporters is Antonio
Rallo, Chairman of
the Consortium for the Protection of DOC
Sicilia and Chairman of Assovini (the
association of Sicilian wine producers), who
explains that the new DOC will provide
above all a new drive for the conquest of
international markets.
"The potentialities are certainly enormous”,
adds Rallo, “as we can see from another
figure. IGT Terre Siciliane, which has taken
the place of IGT Sicilia after the advent of
the DOC, chalked up something like 300
million bottles with the 2012 harvest. With
over two million hectolitres of wine involving
more than 30 thousand hectares of
vineyards. Well, the total of this figure plus
that of DOC Sicilia and territorial ones such
as Marsala, Alcamo, Noto and so on, just
to mention a few, is much higher than that
of previous years, obtained from IGT Sicilia
plus the various smaller DOCs scattered
over the island. A clear sign that, with due
recognition, the wine from our region can
experience a new golden age characterized
by quality and consumer protection".
DOC Sicilia includes various typologies
of wine: White, including the late harvest
typology; Red, including the late harvest
typology and reserve, Rosé, White
Spumante and Rosé Spumante. With a
mention for the following vines: Inzolia,
Grillo, Catarratto, Carricante, Grecanico,
Fiano, Chardonnay, Damaschino, Viogner,
Muller Thurgau, Sauvignon and Pinot grigio
for white wines. For red wines: Nero d’avola,
Cabernet Sauvignon, Perricone, Nerello
Cappuccio, Frappato, Nerello mascalese,
Cabernet franc, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot nero
and Nocera. As well as double-variety
types (both red and white) such as Grillo-
Grecanico or Nero d’avola Perricone.
