mento a leva di cui fanno menzione sia il
testo "Stilografiche da Collezione"
(Maggi/Negretti/Nencini - Ed. Wrist) che
Emilio Dolcini nella sua trattazione Omas.
Su questa penna, prodotta presumibilmente
nel corso degli anni 1930, é presente
il tipico pallino rosso, che sarà utilizzato
anche sulla Itala.
Dal punto di vista estetico, la Itala é una
penna dalle dimensioni molto generose,
che venne prodotta sia in nero che in una
gamma di colorazioni marmorizzate.
Tecnicamente, é una penna assai complessa,
con un delicato meccanismo di
caricamento a pressione a cui si accede
svitando il fondello. La complessità del
meccanismo, all'interno del quale sono
alloggiate piccole molle che permettono il
movimento del fondello, rende gli esemplari
di Itala non funzionanti pressoché
irriparabili.
L'ultima considerazione che mi pare
necessaria in questo contesto, fa riferimento
all'esistenza, a Genova, di ben due
realtà commerciali/produttive legate alle
penne a doppio pennino: Zerollo (vedi
alla voce corrispondente - Vol. II) e Itala
Cromograf e, all'effettivo coinvolgimento
di Simoni nella produzione di questi
modelli, che, se é certo e completo per i
modelli Itala, non lo é altrettanto per i
modelli Zerollo.
D) Altre produzioni Omas
PARKER
Nella vastissima gamma di stilografiche
prodotte da Simoni rientrano anche una
serie di modelli in ebanite ed in celluloide
marcati Parker. Sull'origine produttiva
di queste penne aleggia ancora un certo
mistero: non é chiaro infatti se queste stilografiche,
in tutto e per tutto simili alle
consorelle americane, nei modelli
Duofold Streamline e Thrift time, siano
state prodotte sotto licenza da parte dell'azienda
americana o, se invece, si sia
trattato di una produzione "clandestina".
A favore dell'ipotesi di una produzione
ufficialmente riconosciuta, gioca la provata
serietà dell'azienda di Simoni. L'ipotesi
di una produzione "clandestina" deriva
invece da considerazioni di carattere "collezionistico".
In primo luogo, l'incisione
Simoni was no stranger to manufacturing
double-nibbed pens, having produced the
black hard rubber lever-filler mentioned
in the book Stilografiche da Collezione
(Collectible fountain pens – Maggi,
Negretti, and Nencini) as well as Dolcini’s
treatment of Omas. This pen, probably
made during the thirties, has the typical
small red dot that was later to be used on
the Itala.
From the design perspective, the Itala is a
very large pen that was made in black as
well as a range of marbled shades.
Technically it’s highly complex, with a
delicate pressure filling mechanism operated
by twisting the blind end cap. The
complexity of the mechanism, which
includes tiny internal springs that allow
the movement of the blind end, mean that
it’s almost impossible to repair Italas if
broken.
The last point that needs to be mentioned
is that there were two companies in
Genoa involved in the manufacture and
sale of double-nibbed pens: Zerollo (see
entry in Vol. II) and Itala Cromograf. We
are certain of Simoni’s involvement in the
production of the Italas but less certain
that he was also involved in the Zerollo
models.
D – Other Omas pens
PARKER
The enormous number of pens made by
Omas also includes a series of hard rub-

Italia", risulta assai poco compatibile
con l'incisione ufficiale
presente sulle stilografiche
americane. Va sottolineato,
inoltre che, se la dicitura
Duofold risulta "tollerabile" sui
modelli che hanno appunto le
caratteristiche estetiche delle
Duofold, essa lo é molto meno
sui modelli Thrift Time, che
non hanno niente a che vedere
con le gamme Duofold.
La collaborazione tra Simoni e l'Ing.
Webber, distributore italiano del marchio
Parker dagli anni venti ai tardi anni trenta,
che portò alla creazione delle Saratoga
(Vedi: Saratoga - Vol. II) parrebbe un
anello di congiunzione di non poca rilevanza,
soprattutto se si tiene conto delle
difficoltà di cui si é avuto notizia (non
documentata), tra Webber e la casa americana,
proprio a causa di produzioni non
autorizzate.
Potrebbero essere proprio le stilografiche
prodotte da Simoni ad aver determinato
per Webber la revoca della concessione di
esclusivista Parker per il mercato italiano.
La presenza della dicitura "fabbricato in
Italia" potrebbe quindi essere un semplice
espediente per aggirare le limitazioni
imposte dai brevetti americani.
Non é da escludere, tuttavia, che questa
dicitura sia stata utilizzata per facilitare la
commercializzazione di queste penne in
un'epoca in cui la politica protezionistica
del Governo italiano si muoveva verso la
promozione ed il sostegno dei prodotti
nazionali a discapito di quelli di importazione.
Esempi di questo genere si trovano
anche nel panorama Montblanc: in alcuni
modelli le diciture in tedesco sono sostituite
con parole italiane corrispondenti
(Meisterstuck diviene: Capolavoro) oppure
viene aggiunta la frase "Fabbricato in
ber and celluloid pens marked
“Parker.” Some degree of mystery
is still attached to the real story
behind these pens: it remains
unclear if these Duofold
Streamline and Thrift Time style
fountain pens, which are all but
identical to their American counterparts,
were made under
license to the US company or
were clandestine imitations.
The proven integrity of Simoni’s
company would suggest that
these pens were made officially.
The argument supporting the
idea that they were unofficial copies is
based on purely collecting-related issues.
In the first place, the style of the engraving
on the barrel of these pens, which reads
“Geo S. Parker – Duofold / Fabbricato In
Italia” over two lines, is quite different
from what appears on the American models.
It should also be mentioned that while
the word “Duofold” looks at home on
models that really do have the appearance
of Duofolds, it is much less at home on the
Thrift Time pens, which have nothing
whatsoever to do with the Duofold range.
The collaboration between Simoni and
Webber, the Italian distributor of the
Parker brand from the twenties through
the thirties, which led to the creation of
the Saratoga (see Saratoga, Vol. II), may
be the important link, particularly if you
bear in mind the reported (although not
documented) difficulties that existed
between Webber and the American company
caused by unauthorized copies of its
pens.
It very well might have been the fountain
pens made by Simoni that caused the cancellation
of the exclusive license granted to
Webber by Parker. The presence of the
Italian words “fabbricato in Italia” (made
in Italy) might therefore have been a piece
of expediency to find a way around the
restrictions imposed by the American
