SIMPLEX/SIMPLEX EXCELSIOR Ben poco é noto sulla storia di queste stilografiche; le uniche informazioni derivano da un articolo di Emilio Dolcini, intitolato "Simplex Excelsior" pubblicato sul numero 42 della Rivista Penna. Le stilografiche illustrate confermano senza possibilità di dubbio, il coinvolgimento di Simoni nella produzione. Si tratta di modelli facilmente riconducibili alle gamme Minerva, sia nella versione tipo Duofold che in quella Ellittica. Di particolare interesse anche il modello faccettato, con caricamento a leva laterale che pare, a tutti gli effetti, una Omas Extra. entries for Saratoga, Vol. II; Saratoga’s, Vol. II; and Mengoni, Vol. I. SIMPLEX/SIMPLEX EXCELSIOR Very little is known of the story behind these fountain pens. The only source of information we have is Emilio Dolcini’s article “Simplex Excelsior,” which appeared in issue 42 of Penna magazine. The pictured fountain pens confirm beyond all doubt that Omas was involved in their production. These pens are obviously Minervas, including both Duofoldstyle pens and the elliptical model. The faceted lever-filler is particularly interesting, which for all intents and purposes appears to be an Omas Extra. Concerning the origins of the Simplex/Simplex Excelsior brand, the contribution I’d like to make here is from several yearbooks in which the Simplex brand appears with the wording “Penne e pennini di Meda A.,” (A. Meda pens and nibs) along with an address at 27 Corso Magenta, Milan. These pens were made from the early forties through the early fifties. Nevertheless, the existence of Simplex models from the thirties suggests that the official registrations refer only to a limited period in the life of Meda’s business, which was presumably operating well before this. The address, in the heart of downtown Milan, suggests that Per quanto riguarda l'origine del marchio Simplex/Simplex Excelsior, ciò che posso aggiungere, sono le informazioni desunte da alcuni annuari, dove il marchio "Simplex" si trova associato alla dicitura "Penne e pennini di Meda A.", con indirizzo in Corso Magenta, 27, a Milano. Il periodo di riferimento va dai primi anni quaranta ai primi anni 1950; i modelli marcati Simplex, risalenti agli anni 1930, lasciano tuttavia supporre che le registrazioni ufficiali facciano riferimento solo ad un periodo limitato dell'attività di Meda, le cui origini sono presumibilmente più antiche. Il centralissimo indirizzo di Corso Magenta suggerisce, anche in questo caso, una produzione sviluppati da Simoni per un rivenditore specializzato. Concludo la trattazione sulle Simplex/Simplex Excelsior, con una nota relativa al marchio Excelsior, di cui si conoscono esempi anche senza la dicitura Simplex. Sicuramente alcuni modelli con questo nome furono prodotti da Omas; esistono tuttavia esemplari di Excelsior che nulla hanno a che vedere con la produzione di Simoni (per maggiori informazioni a questo proposito, consultare la voce Excelsior nel primo volume). B) Produzioni su commissione realizzate da Omas per un periodo limitato e solo per alcune gamme, con modelli talvolta non sempre ed immediatamente riconducibili alla produzione ordinaria di Simoni: The King, Welcome, Kosca, The Scotland, Dollar pen, Forever/For Ever, F.O.R.T. , Medusa, MBM. again these pens were made for a specialized pen reseller. I’ll conclude our discussion of Simplex/Simplex Excelsior pens by mentioning the Excelsior brand, which can also be found without the word “Simplex.” There’s no doubt that some of these pens were made by Omas. There are, however, examples that have nothing in common- with the firm. (For more information in this regard, see Excelsior, Vol. I.) B – Pens made by Omas to fill orders for limited periods and only for some lines of brands, including models not readily identifiable as standard Omas products: The King, Welcome, Kosca, The Scotland, Dollar pen, Forever/For Ever, Medusa, MBM. 72 DOLLAR PEN Questa voce si é aggiunta all'elenco delle produzioni su commissione realizzate da Simoni solo recentemente, grazie al ritrovamento di due esemplari di Dollar Pen, le cui caratteristiche estetiche richiamano con chiarezza alcuni modelli Omas e Minerva (Riferimento: L. Jacopini: "Dollar Pen, The Scotland - Le insolite Ogive di Omas e nuovi orizzonti di ricerca" - Penna nr. 46). I modelli di riferimento sono, infatti, una stilografica ogivale, molto vicina nel design ad alcuni modelli The Scotland e al modello Omas Extra in celluloide verde, con estremità coniche illustrato in questo capitolo. L'altra penna é invece una Minerva, assimilabile alle produzioni di transizione tra i modelli Minerva in stile Duofold e le Ellitica. Ambedue le penne presentano sul serbatoio l'incisione "Dollar Pen - Made in Usa" ed hanno pennini omonimi marcati "Dollar Pen - 14 Ct", particolari che ne collocano l'epoca di produzione prima del 1935. Sfortunatamente, non é noto né per chi, né per quanto tempo, Simoni produsse i modelli Dollar Pen. KOSCA (Vol. I) Questo marchio, originario di Milano, é stato ampiamente analizzato nel Vol. I alla voce corrispondente. La gamma dei modelli Kosca, comprende certamente alcune serie di penne la cui origine é senza dubbio riconducibile ad Omas. Parlano in questo senso la penna del dottore Kosca ed alcuni modelli in celluloide le cui caratteristiche estetiche confer- DOLLAR PEN Dollar Pens were only recently added to the list of pens made by Omas to fill thirdparty orders following the discovery of two Dollar Pens whose design clearly reflects certain Omas and Minerva models (see L. Jacopini, “Dollar Pen, The Scotland – Omas torpedoes and a new area for research,” Penna no. 46). The pens in question include a fountain pen with tapering ends that’s very similar in appearance to certain The Scotland models and the green celluloid Omas Extra with conical ends shown in this chapter. The other pen is a Minerva in the style of those made during the transitional period between the Duofold-style and the elliptical Minervas. Both pens have the wording “Dollar Pen – Made in USA” engraved on the barrel, and nibs of the same name, marked “Dollar Pen – 14 Ct,” which would place their production to pre-1935. Unfortunately it's not known for whom or for how long Omas made the Dollar Pen. KOSCA (Vol. I) This Milan brand is covered in detail in volume one under the corresponding entry. The range of Kosca models includes a few series of pens that were undoubtedly made by Omas. Prime examples are the Kosca doctor’s pen and certain celluloid models whose styling confirm that Kosca had a relationship with Omas that continued into the early forties (see in this mano un rapporto di collaborazione con Simoni che si estende fino ai primi anni quaranta (vedasi, a questo proposito l'articolo di Emilio Dolcini: "Kosca e Omas - Un rapporto durato nel tempo" pubblicato sl numero 46 della rivista Penna). La vastità della produzione Kosca, ne giustifica tuttavia una trattazione a sé stante. FOR EVER/FOREVER (Vol. I) Ho già trattato questo marchio nel primo volume di questa enciclopedia. Le numerose informazioni raccolte sull'evoluzione produttiva di queste stilografiche, grazie ai contributi di Emilio Dolcini e di Enrico Bettazzi, confermano sicuramente un coinvolgimento di Omas nella produzione di alcune gamme. Non tutti i modelli For Ever, tuttavia, possono essere ascritti a Simoni; valga in questo senso, ad esempio, il riferimento alla rientrante con rivestimento laminato oro, illustrata alla voce For Ever nel primo volume. Le sue caratteristiche estetiche si discostano marcatamente dagli stilemi Omas. F.O.R.T. Sulle origini commerciali di queste stilografiche non esistono informazioni. I modelli conosciuti, caratterizzati dall'incisione F.O.R.T. sul serbatoio, sono inequivocabilmente Minerva di produzione regard Emilio Dolcini’s article “Kosca and Omas – A relationship that stood the test of time,” Penna, no. 46). The enormity of Kosca’s output justifies devoting a separate section to this brand. FOR EVER/FOREVER (Vol. I) This brand is covered in volume one. The large amount of information collected on the evolution of these fountain pens – thanks to the work of Emilio Dolcini and Enrico Bettazzi – confirms the involvement of Omas in the production of certain lines. Not all For Ever models, however, can be attributed to Simoni. The safety pens with gold-filled overlays pictured and discussed under the heading “For Ever” in volume one are a case in point. Their design is a far cry from the stylistic canons of Omas. F.O.R.T. We have no information on the commercial origins of this brand. The models we know of, distinguished by the initials “F.O.R.T.” engraved on the barrel, are certainly Minervas and made by Omas. It’s 73
