OMAS: PRODUZIONI SU
COMMISSIONE
Il panorama delle penne prodotte da
Omas su commissione é vastissimo e
comprende, purtroppo, ancora molte
zone d'ombra. In alcuni casi, le produzioni
di Simoni realizzate per essere commercializzate
con marchi diversi da Omas,
sono facilmente riconoscibili e catalogabili,
in altri casi, invece, la paternità di
Simoni può essere stabilita solo facendo
riferimento a determinati particolari e dettagli.
Esistono poi produzioni precisamente
deduzioni, associazioni, e supposizioni,
Columbus, The King, Nettuno, Kosca,
Zerollo. Per non parlare poi delle produzioni
minori, meno famose, meno conosciute
e conoscibili, come ad esempio Yes
OK, Forever, Welcome, Williamson etc.
MADE–TO–ORDER
OMAS
Omas made an enormous number of pens
to fill third-party orders. Unfortunately
there are still many gray areas concerning
these models. In some cases the pens
made by Simoni that weren’t to be sold
under the Omas name are readily identifiable
and easily cataloged. In others,
however, tracing the pens to Omas
involves focusing on certain finer details.
The production of some pens has been
thoroughly documented. Other pens have
only been attributed to Omas on the basis
of deductions, drawing connections, and
suppositions that can’t always been
demonstrated “scientifically.”
The publication of the booklet Stilografiche
Omas dal 1925 ad Oggi, which contains a
list of the various brands made by Omas
to fill third-party orders, had the effect of
thoroughly confusing the issue for several
years. The problem is that it fails to specify
if, and in which cases, Omas’s input
involved making individual parts, producing
particular models, or making pens for
existing product lines due to production
shortfalls or other problems faced by their
clients.
This oversimplification of the issue resulted
in collectors attributing a good part of
the quality pens made in Italy in the thirties
and forties to Omas – including the
Columbus, The King, Nettuno, Kosca, and
Zerollo brands, as well as smaller, less well
known, less recognizable brands, such as
Yes OK, Forever, Welcome, and
Williamson.
I therefore believe that this is an area that
needs to be approached with great care,
not so much as to detract Simoni’s contribution
to the Italian fountain pen industry
but to put this contribution into the
proper perspective. Similarities, resemblances,
and anecdotal evidence therefore
all need to be properly assessed, in all
cases it being necessary to rely on demonstrable
facts.
In his book, in the chapter entitled
“Exploring the galaxy,” the ever thorough
and circumspect Emilio Dolcini discusses
