As well as the basic single and double pen
sets with black or transparent glass or
marble bases, Omas made more elaborate
sets. These sets feature a range of decorative
elements that stand out for the obvious
work that went into the designs and,
often, for the originality of their subjects.

MINERVA
Prima di addentrarmi nella trattazione del
panorama Minerva, ritengo opportuno
fare riferimento ancora una volta al testo
di E. Dolcini, dove viene specificato che,
oltre alle stilografiche Minerva di produzione
Omas, si conoscono penne con lo
stesso nome, sia rientranti che in celluloide
colorata, le cui caratteristiche non
sono però assimilabili alla produzione di
Simoni. Di queste Minerva si conosce ben
poco, a parte un' inserzione pubblicitaria,
riprodotta nel testo di Dolcini, che reclamizza
la "Penna Stilografica Minerva -
Pennino placcato oro 14 Karati funzionamento
perfetto", acquistabile tramite
vaglia postale presso la "Penna Minerva -
Via Copernico 41 - Milano". Si tratta, in
sostanza, di un'ulteriore dimostrazione di
quanto la scarsa attenzione prestata in
Italia alla registrazione dei marchi abbia
permesso a due aziende attive più o
meno nello stesso periodo, di utilizzare lo
stesso nome per le proprie gamme di
penne.
Il panorama produttivo Omas degli anni
trenta si completa con l'introduzione delle
gamme di stilografiche denominate
Minerva. Benché facenti parte di una così
detta sottomarca, le Minerva rivaleggiano
per qualità costruttiva e valenza estetica
con i migliori articoli delle linee di punta.
Per queste penne vengono infatti usate
non solo le stesse celluloidi dei modelli
Omas ma addirittura colorazioni e disegni
del tutto originali, di cui non si trova traccia
nelle linee di punta.
Furono proprio i modelli Minerva, nati
per soddisfare le esigenze di un'utenza
medio/alta, ad essere ampiamente utilizzati
da Simoni per le produzioni in conto
terzi. Le caratteristiche iniziali di questa
linea furono il design in stile Duofold
Streamline, il cappuccio con due anellini
e clip con terminazione a sferetta, senza
l'incisione "18 KR" e la dicitura su due
linee, sul serbatoio, "Minerva - Marc.
Dep". Di questi modelli in stile Duofold,
prodotti in tre misure, esistono anche

Before embarking upon the discussion of
Minerva pens, I believe it’s appropriate to
again refer to Dolcini’s volume on Omas,
in which he mentions that in addition to
Minervas made by Omas, Minervas exist,
both safety and colored celluloid pens,
that are quite different from the pens
made by Omas. We know very little about
these pens other than what can be
gleaned from an advertisement, reproduced
in Dolcini’s book, for the “Minerva
fountain pen – 14-karat gold nib, perfect
operation.” The pens could be bought by
sending a money order to “Penna
Minerva – Via Copernico 41 – Milan.”
This is another case of how the scant
attention then given in Italy to the registration
of trademarks allowed two companies
to use the same name for their products
at more or less the same time.
The Omas range of the thirties also
included a range of pens released under
the Minerva brand name. Although a socalled
sub-brand, Minerva pens rival
Omas’s flagship products in terms of manufacturing
quality and design. But while
these pens are made from the same celluloids
as Omas models, among them there
are also colors and designs that are
entirely original and not to be found in
the main product lines. Introduced to
cater for the middle to high market bracket,
Minervas were also widely used by
Simoni to fill third-party orders.
The earliest Minervas were based on the
Duofold Streamline, with two thin cap
bands and a clip with a ball tip without
the “18 KR” engraving and with the wording
over two lines, “Minerva – Marc.
Dep.” (registered trademark). These
Duofold-style pens, made in three sizes,
can also be found with the distinctive
shovel-shaped clip, which was later definitively
adopted for the Minerva classic
series released in 1934.
The first models were made of hard rubber
and celluloid. Hard rubber was soon
