Introduction
As noted in his Introduction to his "Check List", it was in 1940 that Parris, '178',
published a list, "which brought together the published and unpublished
records of microorganisms and viruses in Hawaii". Raabe pointed out since
then much information had accumulated and the need for this new information
to be brought together was great. However, the "Check List" prepared by
Raabe for publication about 1967 was unfortunately never published and only
xerox copies of the original manuscript were available for circulation chiefly
within the Department of Plant Pathology, University of Hawaii.
In 1980, I had the good fortune to spend six months in Honolulu as a
Research Affiliate in the Department, where I devoted part of my time, with
the permission of Dr. O. V. Holtzmann, Chairman of the Department of Plant
Pathology, and with his encouragement and that of the Department members,
in preparing a fresh "Check List". On account of a slow beginning, its
preparation was incomplete when I left Hawaii and has been completed only
after my return to the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology or Purdue
University, West Lafayette, Indiana.
As in the original publication by Parris, and again by Raabe, this "List"
is divided into two parts. In Part 1, entitled "Host and Substrate of the Fungi
and other Organisms", the pathogens are listed under the host genera on
which the pathogens are reported. In Part 2, "Fungi and other Microorganisms
not reported in Part 1", are listed all the other microorganisms, which I found
recorded from Hawaii.
Raabe also recorded certain changes in the nomenclature of the host
plants and of their pathogens. For the names of the host genera, I began with
St. John, '207', but later I used Willis, '247', and finally Ellen R. Farr et al .
The latter reference work, Index Nominum Genericorum (Plantarum) 3 Vol.
1979, twenty-five years in the making, covers not only the host plants but also
the fungi. It, and projected future supplements, will be the standard reference
for a very long time. As Raabe did before me, for the names of host species
and their pathogens, I found "In Gardens of Hawaii" by Marie C. Neal most
useful. The authors for some host species were located in the "Index
Kewensis", but for some species I was unable to find the authors. As already
mentioned, Raabe recorded some name changes in the names of the
pathogens and I too have recorded a number of name changes, but unlike
