DIVINA RECORDS DVN-DVD 2 2007 (DVD)
Divina Records’ (Pablo Berruti) DVD version and Mike Richter’s CD-R version both derive from a set of tapes
that were provided by the Juilliard School to John Ardoin for preparation of his book: Callas at Juilliard : The
Master Classes, Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1987. When Richter prepared the version for CD-Rom he greatly
compressed the audio to fit it on a single CD. Berruti’s DVD version presents that source without compression.
The striking difference in sound can be heard during a portion of the early Barbara Hendricks class where the
CD-Rom had to be used due to a missing segment in his source.
Berruti’s source derives from a set of compact disc transfers (in uncompressed sound) made by Richter from
Ardoin’s tapes while they were in his possession. Richter gav e Ardoin’s tapes to the Library of Congress.
EMI’s early CD set presenting a few excerpts from the sessions in excellent sound were probably made directly
from Juilliard’s masters.
