CIRCO DIATONICO di Clara Graziano
La Banda
Musiche dello spettacolo viaggiante
Music for travelling shows
…un giorno acrobati,
un altro mangiafuoco,
un giorno giocolieri,
un altro funamboli…
…sempre alla ricerca di equilibri,
sempre con il fiato sospeso,
sempre catturati dalle emozioni.
…acrobats one day,
fire-eater the next,
jugglers one day,
funambulists the next
… forever balance-hunting,
forever breath-taken,
forever emotion-bound.
Clara Graziano
Every circus worthy of the name had its own Band!
A big one with a wealth of instruments or a small one with only a trumpet, a trombone and
some other instrument.
Every town worth its salt had its Band too!
Big with players in flamboyant uniforms or a small one with old, battered instruments.
I remember not only the music played for the jugglers and the roll of the snare-drums for the
clowns but also the Patron saint’s procession, the fetes, the fireworks.
All of this is the Circo Diatonico, its original compositions inspired by the sounds of bands and the
poetics of circuses, and a few short “international standard” pieces, in memory of those street
performances and the smiles on people’s faces.
Acrobazie
At the centre of the big tent, beneath a star-filled sky, it’s time
for acrobatics and the big thrill
giro salto corro volo
tocco il cielo e guardo il suolo
gira intorno gira intorno
chi è partito fa ritorno
salta in alto salta in alto
ogni cosa ha il suo risvolto
giro salto corro volo
la mia vita è una capriola
e giro salto corro volo
I turn I jump I run I fly
I brush the sky and see the ground
spin round and round
whoever goes up must come down
jump high jump high
all things have their own reverse
I turn I jump I run I fly
my life is a summersault
and I turn I jump I run I fly
Grande Fuoco
… specchio delle nostre ardenti passioni.
… mirror of our burning passions.
Fuoco! Energia vitale nell’oscurità
arde sul cerchio, lo trapasso, con gran dignità;
Fuoco! Tutto avvolgi e bruci
luce intorno a me
grande signore di quel regno, principe o re;
Fuoco! Elegante, forte
danzo insieme a te
dolce, selvaggio, mi accarezzi, sogno ancor di te;
voglio danzare intorno al vortice maestoso
e sento il brivido che scorre
danzo, danzo, danzo, ancor più forte
è il suono “zara, zara, zazza”
danzo danzo danzo ancor più forte
e sento il brivido che scorre
danzo danzo danzo ancor più forte
è il suono “zara zara zazza”
L’attesa
Fire! Life-energy through the gloom
Burning on the whirling wheel, I pass through,
with great aplomb;
Fire! All-enfolding, all-consuming
light around me
great lord of that realm, prince or king;
Fire! Elegant, powerful
I dance with you
sweet, wild, you stroke me, I still dream of you
I want to dance, twirling in a lordly eddy
and feel the thrilling ripple
I dance, I dance, I dance, the sound grows
louder “dada, dada, dadada”
I dance, I dance, I dance again, again, and feel
the thrilling ripple
I dance, I dance, the sound grows louder
“dada, dada, dadada”
Expectation… awaiting an event, a birth, a fresh encounter, a brand-new emotion.
tutta Napoli.
The Maraviglia (Marvel) Circus was one of the smallest in the
world. No tent; only straw-bottomed chairs, geese, hens and a
dog. A family circus: a grandfather tamer and peanut vendor, a
daughter trapeze artist and cashier, a father knife-thrower and
driver, and a mother… a fat/big human missile, peeling
potatoes.
And the clown? The funniest in the world… or, at least, in the
whole of Naples.
Dedicated to Mario Merola,“re di ogni sceneggiata”
Malaluna
(from the poetry by Cecìlia Meirelles)
volte nascosta, a volte sfrontata. In tutte le lingue del mondo.
Cecilia Meirelles was an acrobat with words. She played at inventing rhymes in a fantastic
Brazilian all her own and when she wrote she was inspired by the moon which enthralled her.
And the moon spoke to her “aney, aney, aney, aney”, its voice, sometimes gleaming, sometimes
nostalgic, sometimes retiring, sometimes forward, in all the languages of the world.
Tenho fases, como a lua
fases de andar escondida,
fases de vir para a rua...
tenho fases, como a lua
perdição da minha vida!
perdição da vida minha!
tenho fases de ser tua,
tenho outras de ser sozinha.
…aney, aney, aney…
fases que vão e que vêm,
no secreto calendário
que um astrólogo arbitrário
inventou para meu uso.
e roda a melancolia
seu interminável fuso!
não me encontro com ninguém
tenho fases, como a lua...
…aney, aney, aney…
Vado a fasi, come la luna
fasi in cui me ne sto nascosta
fasi in cui mi mostro per strada...
vado a fasi, come la luna
perdizione della mia vita!
perdizione della vita mia!
ci sono fasi in cui sono tua,
in altre preferisco essere sola.
fasi che vanno e vengono
con un calendario segreto
che un astrologo arbitrario
inventò per mio uso.
e la malinconia avvolge
il suo fuso senza fine!
non mi trovo con nessuno
(ho molte fasi, come la luna...)
* Traduzione dal portoghese di
Federico Guerrini
I have my phases like the moon
phases when I remain aloof
phases when I appear on the
street
I have my phases like the moon
bane of my life!
bane of my life!
there are times when I am yours,
and times when I prefer to be alone.
phases that come, phases that go
according to a secret calendar
a random astrologer
made for me alone to use
and melancholy winds
its endless spindle!
In tune with nobody
Sospesi
Dangling … from the acrobat’s string under the stars or from
the doubtful string of any ordinary day.
Marcia di Carovana
Tutti in marcia! La carovana avanza su tre file.
La prima è dell’allegria,
la seconda è della nostalgia,
la terza è della fantasia.
Get moving! The caravan advances in three rows.
The first is merriment
the second nostalgia
the third is fancy.
Alter-azioni
Everyday actions to which we attribute no importance. But
when we discover their beauty we feel we are experiencing
something magical.
