ORQUESTRA DE LA COMUNITAT VALENCIANA
Leading Orchestra at Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía
Music Director: Omer Meir Wellber
The Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana (OCV), leading orchestra at Palau de les Arts
Reina Sofía, comprises international musicians, personally selected by the founder music
director, Lorin Maazel, who has been leading the orchestra from 2006 to 2011. In a short
time, the OCV, led by Maazel, has been positioned among the most upwardly moving
orchestras internationally, and has received much praise by public and critics alike as "one
of the best orchestras of recent years".
The main task of the orchestra is to perform in the orchestra pit during the opera season at
Palau de les Arts. Conducted by Lorin Maazel, the orchestra has polished its technique and
has become a versatile group capable of performing complex scores of very differing styles,
such as Don Giovanni, Madama Butterfly, Turandot, Carmen, Simon Boccanegra, Luisa Miller,
Don Carlo, Parsifal, La Traviata, Cavalleria rusticana, La vida breve, Aida and 1984.
On the season 2011-2012, the Israeli maestro Omer Meir Wellber has become the music
director of the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana, which he had already conducted in
operas such as Aida, Evgeni Onegin, L'elisir d'amore, Boris Godunov, La vida breve, Tosca,
Rigoletto and I due Foscari. Maestro Zubin Mehta, as president of the Festival del
Mediterrani, has also had close relations with the OCV since it was created, and has
conducted the orchestra in operas (Fidelio, Turandot, Der Ring des Nibelungen, Salome,
Carmen, Tosca, Don Giovanni, Il trovatore, Medea and Tristan und Isolde) and in concerts.
The two performances of Wagner's famous Tetralogy consolidated the international prestige
of the young but solid orchestra. To their flexibility in opera, their brilliant personality to
tackle ambitious scripts of symphonic repertoires is also added, such as Symphonies 2, 3
and 4 by Mahler, Requiem by Verdi, Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz, Glagolitic Mass by
Janáček, Eroica by Beethoven, New World Symphony by Dvořák, Symphony No. 8 by
Bruckner or The Rite of Spring by Stravinsky.
The presence of other great names in contemporary orchestra conducting such as Riccardo
Chailly, Andrew Davis, Valery Gergiev, Gianandrea Noseda or Georges Prêtre, and their
activity in the record market contributes to place the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana
among the most exemplary and dynamic symphonic projects of our time.
