Per Piero Fornasetti ogni singola idea era ispirazione
sufficiente per dare vita a infinite variazioni. Per
questo gran parte del suo lavoro si fonda sull'evoluzione
costante di temi specifici. Lasciando libera la
sua immaginazione, Fornasetti sapeva continuamente
reinventare e reinterpretare un´immagine.
Tra i suoi temi, i più ricorrenti sono il sole, le carte
da gioco, gli arlecchini, le mani, gli autoritratti. Ma
il più famoso è quello che ha dato a Fornasetti lo
spunto per coniare il titolo 'Tema e Variazioni': il
volto enigmatico di una donna, la cantante lirica e
attrice Lina Cavalieri.
Piero Fornasetti trovò questo volto, oggi diventato
icona, sfogliando una rivista francese del secolo
XIX°, e ne rimase affascinato. Facendone al tempo
stesso una musa e un motivo ricorrente, Fornasetti
nel corso della sua carriera artistica ritornerà
costantemente a questo volto. I tratti archetipicamente
femminili e l´espressione enigmatica di Lina
Cavalieri diventeranno il modello usato più frequentemente
da Fornasetti, di cui si contano più di
350 variazioni.
Come ha spiegato lo stesso Piero, il volto di Lina
Cavalieri è un vero e proprio archetipo: la quintessenza
di un´immagine di bellezza classica, come una
statua greca, enigmatica come la 'Gioconda' e così
plasmabile all'idea che piano si stava sviluppando
nella sua mente. A ispirare la fedeltà di Fornasetti e
a scatenarne la spontanea e inesauribile creatività
fu, più che la celebrità della cantante, il fascino formale
e grafico del volto. Per Fornasetti questo volto
divenne il motivo ultimo e più duraturo. Con grande
modestia tutta quest'opera rimane riprodotta su
un multiplo d’uso quotidiano come può essere il
piatto. 'Tema e Variazioni', mostra il suo multiplo
giocando con un’ idea.
Barnaba Fornasetti, figlio di Piero, porta oggi avanti
la tradizione del padre, continuando a produrre e
a ravvivare i motivi Fornasetti. Direttore e cuore
artistico dell´azienda, Barnaba custodisce l´eredità
del padre, con riedizioni dei pezzi più rappresentativi
e “reinvenzioni” nella tradizione di produzione
artigianale inaugurata dal padre. Anche per la serie
'Tema e Variazioni' ha continuato a creare nuovi
piatti di cui i numeri 333 e 366 in collaborazione con
Nigel Coates.

For Piero Fornasetti, a single idea provided enough
inspiration to create infinite variations. In fact,
much of his work involved constant evolutions of
specific themes by allowing his imagination to roam
freely. Fornasetti was able to constantly reinvent or
reinterpret an image.
Of these themes, the most recurrent are: the sun,
playing cards, harlequins, hands, self-portraits.
But the most famous, the image that inspired
Fornasetti to coin the title ‘Tema e Variazioni’, is the
enigmatic face of a woman: the opera singer Lina
Cavalieri.
He found that now iconic face as he leafed through
a 19th century French magazine and became fascinated.
Taking her as much as a muse and as a motif,
he would return to Lina Cavalieri’s face again and
again throughout his career. The archetypal classic
female features and enigmatic expression of Lina
Cavalieri became Fornasetti’s most frequently used
template and upon which he based more than 350
variations.
Lina Cavalieri’s face, explained Piero Fornasetti,
was another archetype – a quintessentially beautiful
and classic image, like a Greek statue, enigmatic
like the 'Gioconda' and therefore able to take shape
into the idea that was slowly building in his mind. It
was this formal, graphic appeal (rather than Lina
Cavalieri’s celebrity) that demanded such loyalty
and inspired the spontaneous and ceaseless creativity
of Fornasetti. For him, this face became the
ultimate enduring motif. With great modesty all
these works were reproduced on a series of everyday
objects like the plate. 'Tema e Variazioni' shows its
variations playing with one idea.
Fornasetti’s son, Barnaba, is perpetuating the
Fornasetti tradition by continuing to produce, and
revive, Fornasetti designs. At the helm of the company
and its creative heart, Barnaba is the custodian
of his father’s legacy.
The Fornasetti Atelier is currently managed by
Barnaba, who has successfully maintained in-house
production, revived as well as reinterpreted his
father’s designs in creations referred to as ‘reinventions’.
Barnaba is also creating new designs for the 'Tema
e Varizioni' series, like the plates 333 and 366 in collaboration
with Nigel Coates.
