REM), the Brazilian translator pla<strong>in</strong>ly describes the “crazy race” without<br />
giv<strong>in</strong>g it a proper name, and Teutsch (DE-TEU) gives a pseudo-description<br />
with nice, <strong>in</strong>comprehensible lat<strong>in</strong>isms. The French translator’s decision<br />
simply to use the English word seems to work just as well, s<strong>in</strong>ce the word<br />
sounds beautiful <strong>in</strong> French pronunciation and means noth<strong>in</strong>g. The example<br />
shows the importance of translat<strong>in</strong>g functions <strong>in</strong>stead of words.<br />
4.2. Names implicitly allud<strong>in</strong>g to the real world of author and<br />
addressees by means of wordplay<br />
An important element of the real world of author and addressees is the<br />
English language. Apart from certa<strong>in</strong> proper names <strong>in</strong> <strong>Alice</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Wonderland</strong><br />
that allude to real persons <strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>direct way, we f<strong>in</strong>d names allud<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
idiomatic expressions. In both cases, the allusion will have produced a<br />
particularly appellative function for the audience A1 when detect<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
hidden reference. The implicit allusions to real persons is bound to be lost<br />
for both A2 and A3, whereas the <strong>in</strong>direct reference to idioms and set phrases<br />
will probably work at least for A2. For A3, they can only fulfil an analogous<br />
function <strong>in</strong> a target-oriented translation.<br />
The Spanish translator opts for a meta-text and adds a long list of<br />
annotations to his translation. He <strong>in</strong>forms the reader that the Dodo, apart<br />
from its reference to the idiomatic expression “as dead as a Dodo,” is an<br />
allusion to Lewis Carroll’s slightly stutter<strong>in</strong>g way of pronounc<strong>in</strong>g his own<br />
name: Do-Do-Dodgson. The Duck refers to his friend, the reverend<br />
Duckworth, and the Lory and the Eaglet to <strong>Alice</strong>’s sisters Lor<strong>in</strong>a Charlotte<br />
and Edith, respectively. The three little sisters liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the treacle well, Elsie,<br />
Lacie and Tillie, also represent the Liddell sisters: Elsie stands for Lor<strong>in</strong>a<br />
