function relies on the receiver’s previous knowledge. For the addressees A1,<br />

it is guaranteed, s<strong>in</strong>ce the historical allusions are <strong>in</strong>direct quotations or<br />

travesties of schoolbook texts. This is probably true also of the reference to<br />

“Shakespeare <strong>in</strong> the pictures of him,” which is used to illustrate how the<br />

Dodo is sitt<strong>in</strong>g “for a long time with one f<strong>in</strong>ger pressed upon its forehead.”<br />

The name of the game mentioned <strong>in</strong> the third chapter, the Caucus race, too,<br />

is probably formed us<strong>in</strong>g a buzzword of the time – it sounds somehow funny,<br />

but it is probably <strong>in</strong>comprehensible to children.<br />

For the audience A2, the geographical and historical references will<br />

also be clear. However, <strong>Alice</strong>, Ada and Mabel and Mary Ann will be fictitious<br />

characters for them. This would not cause a comprehension problem, s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

the characters are <strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>in</strong> contexts where their identity is made clear.<br />

Nevertheless, the appellative function of be<strong>in</strong>g amused when the receivers<br />

read about themselves and their own situation, which characterizes the<br />

reception of A1, does not work for A2.<br />

For modern readers of the translations, whom we might call audience<br />

A3, the situation is more or less the same as for A2, as far as the references<br />

to liv<strong>in</strong>g persons and to places is concerned. They may not know the<br />

pictures of Shakespeare, but s<strong>in</strong>ce the position is described explicitly, there<br />

will be no comprehension problem, but probably no appellative recognition<br />

of someth<strong>in</strong>g known either.<br />

The examples show that different techniques are used to render the names<br />

of the persons alive at the time of text production. It may not be<br />
