DORNBRACHT the SPIRITof WATER Performance 1 Performance 1 DENDRON Choreography by Mark Jarecke Photography Mike Meiré Dornbracht is continuing to develop its involvement in culture: 2005 from fine art to the visual arts. The “Statements” series of exhibitions that has been running since 1996 has been expanded to include “Performances”. The prelude to the new series was the dance performance “Dendron” in Milan on the occasion of the Salone del Mobile. Three women, clad in red, balloon-shaped clothing, move all over a rectangular surface surrounded by the audience. Their bodies swirl alternately across the stage, first hesitantly, then almost ecstatically. Using their arms, legs and whole bodies, they explore the space around them, sometimes quickly, sometimes as if frozen in their movements. At one moment, they appear fully surrounded by fabric, then soon after their garments swing around like dance costumes. Shrill noises, sometimes muffled, sometimes tinny, which suit the performance location – a former machine hall, accompany the artists. Unlike classic performances, there is no particular side for viewing. The normal distance to the stage is dispensed with, the audience sit and stand around the dance floor. While classical ballet suggests a type of weightlessness, here one can feel the strong physical exertion and presence of the dancers very close by. Celestial music, rising to fortissimo, is suddenly interrupted by a sudden silence, and bright light projected onto the dance floor supersedes the abstract shadow of a treetop. The performance lives through continually changing contradictions, such as tranquillity and speed, light and dark, loud and quiet. The “Dendron” dance performance takes as its theme the flowing transitions of nature, Dendron Location/Stage adaptation and habits. The choreographer of the experimental dance project, Mark Jarecke from New York, is a pupil of the legendary Merce Cunningham. In “Dendron”, Mark Jarecke has completed his trilogy of choreographic work on the dynamic link between architectural and emotional environments. Under his direction, Netta Carnit Yerushalmy, Andrea Nicole Johnston and Molly Kathleen Poerstel explored the limitless stage as dancers, and the musician Jonathan James Moniaci played live. The costumes, which look like kinetic objects, come from the New York avant-garde designer Maria Cornejo. The curator of “Dendron” was NEO NOTO Mike Meiré, Cologne.
