Caro Ospite
e Malta, nonché altre mete in Italia.
Guido Grimaldi,
Presidente del Gruppo Grimaldi
Dear Guest,
while welcoming you on board our ships we wish to take
this opportunity to inform you about the latest innovations
we have been able to offer to all our customers over
the last year, despite the global downturn that has also
affected the shipping industry.
The Grimaldi Group has continued to develop, in terms of
both new ships and the addition of routes to other destinations.
In the last twelve months, the Cruise Europa was
delivered and its sister ship Cruise Olympia was launched.
These two latest generation vessels are superbly appointed
to the same high standards as fully fledged liners, making
the voyages on our routes even more enjoyable. Both
belong to the fleet of the Greek company Minoan Lines, a
company part of the Grimaldi Group, the Cruise Europa is
already deployed on the route linking the port of Ancona
with the Greek ports of Igoumenitsa and Patras, while the
Cruise Olympia will be delivered in June and deployed on
the same route.
Greece is a new market for us and we are investing in it
as well as in other countries such as Spain, Tunisia, Malta
and various destinations in Italy. After a year of operation
we can confirm that the introduction of the call at
Porto Torres has allowed many foreign tourists, especially
Spaniards, to appreciate a charming (and unspoilt) part of
Sardinia that can compete with the world’s most beautiful
and exotic tropical paradises.
Earlier this year our Group launched a series of initiatives
broadening and enhancing its range of services to Sicily.
Now the island is accessible from North, Central and
Southern Italy with departures from Genoa, Civitavecchia
and Salerno, respectively.
Added to these links are those of our subsidiary Finnlines,
offering services throughout Northern Europe and the
Baltic Sea, with destinations in Germany, Poland, Finland,
Sweden and Russia and the possibility of discovering new
Nordic routes by taking your car, motorcycle or camper
with you on board.
Finally, I wish to express my heartfelt condolences, both
personally and on behalf of the entire Group, for the
untimely loss of our young friend and consultant, Giovanni
Paci, who edited this magazine for a short time, and who
passed away last autumn.
Dear Guest, I hope to welcome you on board our ships
again in the future and, in the meantime, I wish you a
carefree fun holiday.
In linea Cruise Europa
al via Cruise Olympia
Deployment of the Cruise Europa
launch of the Cruise Olympia
Due eventi hanno segnato la
fine del 2009 per il Gruppo
Grimaldi: la consegna della
Cruise Europa ed il varo della
sua gemella Cruise Olympia, ultime
di una serie di quattro cruise
ferry costruite dalla Fincantieri.
La m/n Cruise Europa è stata consegnata
il 9 ottobre dello scorso anno
ed è subito entrata in servizio sul
collegamento giornaliero Ancona-
Igoumenitsa-Patrasso operato dalla
Minoan Lines, società del Gruppo
Grimaldi. Sorella della Cruise Europa,
la Cruise Olympia è stata invece
varata lo scorso 14 novembre presso
lo stabilimento della Fincantieri
a Castellammare di Stabia, vicino
Napoli. L'unità verrà consegnata
nel mese di giugno ed andrà ad
affiancare la Cruise Europa sulla
stessa rotta tra Italia e Grecia.
Lunghe 225 metri e larghe 31 metri,
con una stazza lorda di 54.310 tonnellate
e una capacità di carico di
250 automobili e 3.000 metri lineari
di autobus, camion, trailer, camper
e roulotte, Cruise Europa e Cruise
Olympia sono i più grandi cruise
ferry del Mediterraneo, potendo
ospitare fino a 3.000 passeggeri in
413 cabine, di cui 18 owner's suite e
50 junior suite, oltre a 542 poltrone
reclinabili. La velocità di crociera
di 28 nodi, consente di effettuare
la traversata tra Ancona, Igoumenitsa
e Patrasso in sole 22 ore.
Le due gemelle sono allestite con
gli stessi elevati standard delle navi
da crociera: sono infatti dotate di
ristorante à la carte e self service,
bar, casinò, area wellness, palestra,
piscina, discoteca, negozi, una
sala conferenze e una per feste,
due saloni riservati agli autisti,
internet point, area videogiochi e
spazi dedicati ai più piccoli; si differenziano
da Cruise Roma e Cruise
Barcelona, le due unità consegnate
da Fincantieri nel 2008 e oggi in
servizio sulla tratta Civitavecchia/
Porto Torres/Barcellona, per una
maggiore capacità in termini di
passeggeri ed una diversa sistemazione
di alcune aree pubbliche.
Entrambe unità, inoltre, nascono
all’insegna del rispetto ambientale
e del risparmio energetico: contribuiranno
infatti, trasportando sulle
Autostrade del Mare centinaia di
camion e migliaia di passeggeri,
a ridurre la congestione della
rete stradale e ad abbattere notevolmente
le emissioni di CO2.
Il presidente di Minoan Lines Emanuele
Grimaldi ha dichiarato: “La
Cruise Olympia e la Cruise Europa
sono un ulteriore esempio di come si
possa coniugare un'altissima qualità
di servizio con il concetto low cost.
Grazie, infatti, alle economie di scala
e di scopo generate, queste nuove
unità potranno offrire noli competitivi
e politiche tariffarie low cost
per i passeggeri, pur continuando a
fornire servizi a bordo simili ad una
nave da crociera”. “Entrambe confermano
la visione rivoluzionaria del
trasporto merci e passeggeri che il
nostro Gruppo ha introdotto sulle
rotte adriatiche tra Italia e Grecia
e che certamente porterà effetti
benefici a lungo termine alle economie
di entrambi i Paesi, alle società
di trasporto europee ed al turismo
in questa area del Mediterraneo”,
conclude Emanuele Grimaldi.
Two events marked the end of 2009
for the Grimaldi Group: the delivery
of the Cruise Europa and the launch
of her sister ship Cruise Olympia, the
last in a series of four cruise ferries
built by the Fincantieri shipyards.
The M/V Cruise Europa was delivered
on 9 October last year and was immediately
deployed on the daily Ancona-
Igoumenitsa-Patras route served by the
Grimaldi Group subsidiary Minoan Lines.
The sister vessel of the Cruise Europa,
the Cruise Olympia, was launched on 14
November at the Fincantieri shipyard in
Castellammare di Stabia, near Naples. This
ship will be delivered in June this year and
will be joining the Cruise Europa on the
same route between Italy and Greece.
225 metres in length and 31 metres in
breadth, with 54,310 gross tonnage and
carrying capacity of 250 cars and 3,000
linear metres of rolling cargoes (coaches,
trucks, trailers, campervans, caravans,
etc), the Cruise Europa and Cruise Olympia
are the biggest cruise ferries in the
Mediterranean; they can accommodate
up to 3,000 passengers in 413 cabins,
including 18 owner’s suites and 50 junior
suites, plus 542 reclining armchairs.
With a cruising speed of 28 knots, they
can make the crossing from Ancona to
Patras via Igoumenitsa in just 22 hours.
The two sister ships are superbly appointed
to the same high standards as fully fledged
liners. Facilities include an à la carte restaurant
plus another self-service restaurant,
bars, a casino, wellness area, gym, swimming
pool, disco, shops, a meeting room,
show lounge, two lounges reserved for
truck drivers, Internet point, video-gaming
and kids’ areas; the vessels differ from
the Cruise Roma and Cruise Barcelona,
which were delivered by Fincantieri in
2008 and are currently operating on the
route between Civitavecchia, Porto Torres
and Barcelona, insofar as they have a
larger capacity in terms of passengers
and a different layout of the public areas.
Both ships also stand out on account of
their environmental sustainability and ener-
Grimaldi
news
gy-saving aspects: they will carry hundreds
of lorries and thousands of passengers
every day on the Motorways of the Sea,
thus helping to reduce road congestion
and substantially reduce CO2 emissions.
Minoan Lines CEO Emanuele Grimaldi
commented: “The Cruise Olympia and
Cruise Europa are further proof that it’s
possible to successfully combine the
highest quality service with the concept
of low cost travel. Indeed, thanks to the
economies of scale and scope generated,
these new vessels can offer extremely
competitive freight charges plus a low
cost pricing policy for passengers, while
still providing cruise ship standard services.
Both sister ships confirm the revolutionary
vision of goods and passenger
transport that our Group has introduced
on the Adriatic routes between Italy and
Greece – a strategy that will definitely
have long-term benefits for the economies
of both countries, for European
transport companies and for tourism
in this area of the Mediterranean.”
marenostrum
Il 2009 si è concluso positivamente
per Grimaldi Lines che ha registrato
un aumento del 23% nel settore
passeggeri rispetto all'anno 2008,
trasportando circa 100.000 passeggeri
in più a bordo delle sue navi.
Nonostante le difficoltà dovute alla
congiuntura economica negativa,
dalle statistiche si evince infatti che,
rispetto all’anno 2008, tra Spagna
Grimaldi Lines ha aderito con
entusiasmo al Circuito Buoni
Vacanze Italia, ideato e promosso
dal Ministero del Turismo con
l’obiettivo di favorire e sviluppare
un turismo accessibile a tutti, anche
alle famiglie disagiate. Il Circuito
Buoni Vacanze offre infatti agli
utenti la possibilità di scegliere,
secondo le proprie esigenze, tra
centinaia di proposte per turismo
familiare a prezzi davvero accessibili.
A partire da gennaio 2010, con
i Buoni Vacanze Italia è possibile
acquistare collegamenti via mare
con Sardegna e Sicilia operati da
Grimaldi Lines e gli speciali pacchetti
turistici nave+hotel proposti
da Grimaldi Lines Tour Operator
su tutto il territorio nazionale.
Più passeggeri a bordo nel 2009
More passengers on board in 2009
e Italia (Sardegna inclusa) hanno
viaggiato sulle navi Grimaldi circa
370.000 passeggeri (+26%), tra Italia
e Tunisia circa 105.000 passeggeri
Dopo l’introduzione
di 9 nuovi collegamenti marittimi
tra Italia, Spagna, Tunisia e Malta,
serviti da navi cruise ferry di ultima
generazione e moderni traghetti tradizionali,
Grimaldi Lines ha successivamente
potenziato i collegamenti
con la Sicilia.
Grimaldi Lines nel "Circuito Buoni Vacanze Italia”
Grimaldi Lines part of the “Circuito Buoni Vacanze Italia”
Grimaldi Lines was delighted to join
the Circuito Buoni Vacanze Italia,
an initiative conceived and promoted by
the Italian Ministry of Tourism with the
objective of fostering and developing
tourism that is accessible to everyone,
including low-income families. The
Circuito Buoni Vacanze offers consumers
the chance to choose, according to
their demands, from among hundreds
of suggestions for family tourism at
very affordable prices. Since January
2010, people with Buoni Vacanze Italia
coupons issued by the State have been
able to purchase discounted ferry tickets
to and from Sardinia and Sicily on
Grimaldi Lines as well as special ferry +
hotel packages marketed by Grimaldi
Lines Tour Operator throughout Italy.
was a positive year for
2009 Grimaldi Lines, which
recorded a 23% increase in the passenger
sector compared to 2008, carrying
about 100,000 passengers more
on board its ships. Despite the difficulties
caused by the global economic
downturn, the statistics show that about
370,000 passengers (+26% compared
to 2008) travelled between Spain and
Italy (including Sardinia), while about
105,000 passengers sailed between Italy
and Tunisia (+20%).
Grimaldi Lines’ success was due to a
“low cost” pricing policy and a series
of initiatives launched by the Company
in 2009. After the opening of
9 new maritime routes linking Italy,
Spain, Tunisia and Malta, served by latest
generation and modern traditional
concept cruise ferries, Grimaldi Lines
strengthened its maritime links with Sicily,
while launching new entertainment
facilities and fun events on board the
Cruise Roma and Cruise Barcelona.
beautiful Piazza del Campo and contested by ten of Siena’s Contradas
the Madonna of Provenzano, and on 16 August it’s the turn of the Palio
Murder Mystery
on the hiGh seas
the plot thickens in the saloons and
passageways on the ship. Who did it and
why? the mystery is unravelled ashore as well,
in Barcelona. and when everyone is on board
once more, heading for Civitavecchia, the
case is solved … by four young cruise guests
who just happen to be law students and
aspiring magistrates. they are the first Murder
Mystery Cruise cup winners.
“F rom this moment on, everything that happens on board this
ship is a potential clue.” As the Cruise Barcelona leaves the
quay in Civitavecchia, a man with a microphone takes the stage
in Sala Smaila’s. The house lights slowly dim, the theatre stirs with
eager anticipation, and then a hush falls over the audience.
This moment of suspense marks the beginning of the Murder
Mystery theme cruise.
The Murder Party formula is a role-play in which a “murder” is
staged and the participants act as suspects or detectives, trying
to ferret out the “murderer”. The setting is a ship belonging to the
Naples-based Grimaldi Group, which is sailing overnight in the
Mediterranean bound for Barcelona. The man holding the microphone
and running the game is director Ciro Sabatino, founder of
Insieme
facendo domande e prendendo appunti.
a hotel, seven guests, a double murder and the hunt for the
killer. The 200 passengers taking part, divided into teams, will try
to find and tie together the clues slid under cabin doors and left
in passageways. The interactive intrigue lasts for the three days of
the cruise; participants are kept guessing as they look for hidden
meanings behind what is said and try to tell witnesses apart from
suspects. Never let your guard down because nothing is what it
seems on board the Murder Mystery Theme Cruise. Every last
detail could be crucial: behind any porthole there may be all kinds
of suspicious happenings, and you need to be wary of even the
most innocent-looking passenger.
Indeed, the first step is to identify possible suspects: on the foredeck
under the night sky or by the lights of the casino, you make
acquaintance with your teammates and share initial hunches,
storing photos of suspicious guests and gathering evidence.
“A boy’s just taken my photograph; I don’t look like a murderer,
do I?", says Vincenza with a bemused look on her face.
This 66-year-old pensioner has always been an avid reader of
whodunits. She’s come on the theme cruise with her 15-yearold
grandson, who’s a fan of mystery games. Michele, 31, is an
architect, and he’s having great fun: “If we’re here it’s because we
have latent homicidal tendencies...,” he smiles furtively. Together
with Daniela, who works as an administrative employee for the
local council and has a passion for crime-solving, he goes around
the ship with a pen and pad asking questions and taking notes.
occultare i suoi segreti?
viaggio... ".
IV edizione “Crociera con delitto” 30 ottobre - 2 novembre
“I love mysteries and thrillers,” Michele goes on. “But the best
part of all is being able to indulge in this pastime while enjoying a
holiday, and make new friends at the same time.”
The game doesn’t stop when they go ashore; beneath the towers
of the Sagrada Familia or in the side streets off Las Ramblas,
the suspects plot their next move and the most cunning players
are hot on their heels, shadowing them in the hope of catching
them in flagrante on the streets of Barcelona. But it’s among the
gargoyles in Montjuic Cemetery that the plot really thickens. And
only the participants who find their way there, thanks to the clues
collected en route, will be able to crack the case and come back
on board the ship at dusk victorious.
The solution begins to come to light as the Cruise Barcelona
leaves port, leaving the red Spanish sunset in her wake. The suspects
are pinned down by the players’ questioning: where were
you on the night of the crime? Did you know the victims? Did you
see anybody coming out of their room?
It’s only a matter of time before the case is solved. At the tables
in the restaurant and the bar, the players whisper their theories
and team members exchange ideas and knowing looks: were the
victims poisoned with atropine by the hotel night porter? Or with
cyanide by the student in room 6? Or was it the professor in room
3, who wanted to hide his secrets?
Eventually, it’s the youngest team that comes up with the answer:
four law students and aspiring magistrates in their twenties. Mario,
Mirko, Jessica and Veronica receive the cup and their other prizes.
They met each other for the first time at the start of the cruise,
but on board they became friends, and discovered they shared
the same passion and the same determination to get to the bottom
of the mystery. “It wasn’t easy,” Mario says, “but when we put
all the clues together it was obvious that the student was guilty.”
The man with the microphone is back to congratulate the winning
team and farewell the passengers as the ship drops anchor.
But before the lights go out there’s time for one last mysterious
parting comment: “The good thing about this game is there are
no winners or losers: every mystery revealed may contain another
hidden within. But that’s another story, and another voyage...”
di / by Giuseppe De Bellis
Fuga? I marinai tornano sempre.
rimetterci in mare. Chi lo ama e chi no, chi lo conosce e chi no.
E’ una splendida malattia. E’ passato, è futuro. Forse è anche
l’unica salvezza.
Domani. Quello che ogni marinaio, giovane o vecchio,
esperto o inesperto, capace o incapace, chiede a Nettuno
Sembrano i nastri
deve snellire i trasporti su rotaia, quello mira a sviluppare i collegamenti
The “Motorways of the
Sea” will save us
For too long they have been treated with
scepticism, but in the last two years alone
they have removed another 20% of trucks
from the roads, resulting in less pollution
and fewer accidents. And now passenger
numbers are up as well. This is how ships
are competing with low cost operators
Anyone born at sea knows: the world is in front of you. You embark
and you’re on your way. It’s a way of life, a vocation, a raison d'être.
Escapism? Seafarers always come back. You head for something you
can’t sea, sailing in an environment that appears to be the same everywhere.
You travel to get to your destination, to set foot on dry land,
because once you get back on terra firma again you know your desire
to go to sea will return. We can’t be like the lead character in the film
The Legend of 1900: “I could never get off this ship. At best, I can step
off my life. Forgive me, my friend, but I’m not getting off.” We get off
to get back on and go back to sea. Some people love it and others
don’t, some are familiar with the sea and others aren’t. It’s a splendid
affliction. It’s past and future. It may be our only salvation. Because the
Mediterranean was the cradle of our civilisation and intends to carry
that civilisation across its waves for some time yet. Tomorrow. That’s
what every sailor – young or old, expert or novice, qualified or unqualified
– asks Neptune every time they bed down: “Tomorrow.” And our
tomorrow depends on the sea. We cross it with the body and the soul:
on cargo ships, cruise liners, small craft, fishing vessels, motorboats,
sailing boats, luxury yachts. It doesn’t matter where, you don’t even
need to actually take to the sea yourself; the important thing is that
you know the sea is there, attracting you, pampering you, “buoying”
you, taking you somewhere. Not just as individuals but as a community.
All it takes is one seafarer and they can take with them in a figurative
sense everyone else who stays ashore. Just go down to the quay
and dwell long enough to see who’s leaving port. It’s like the starting
line for a race with no winner. Take the case of the “Motorways of
the Sea”, an EU project parallel to the new European high-speed rail
network: the latter is intended to reduce travel times by rail, while the
former aims at developing transport links in the Mediterranean. Hence
the sea. Two ports linked by a route. They said for years that the Motorways
of the Sea wouldn’t work. In 2001 the European Commission
presented a weighty White Paper on freight transport setting out an
ambitious program of major measures to be taken at Community level
by 2010. Now, on the eve of 2010, we’re in a position to take stock
marenostrum
marenostrum
and see how far we’ve come. And, despite the Cassandras and the
wet blankets (so to speak), the sea has transported huge numbers of
people and masses of goods. In spite of everything that has happened,
since 2002 the Motorways of the Sea have recorded an increase
in cargo traffic of between 1.5% and 3.5%, and there are currently
around 1,500,000 lorries using the shipping routes. These figures were
calculated by the “Associazione Studi e Ricerche per il Mezzogiorno
(Srm)” and presented in Rome on 25 June 2009. This may not seem
like much, but some observers had predicted far worse. Because here
there’s a huge divide between those who believe in the project and
those who don’t, between those who see the future increasingly oriented
towards the shipping lanes and those who hope it won’t work so
they can say “I told you so.” Among those who’ve been supporting the
scheme all along are the shipowners. They are very much in favour of
promoting the use of these sea routes that their ships sail on every day.
Business is business, of course. But there’s more to it than that. Take
somebody like Aldo Grimaldi for example, and you really do appreciate
why people who live for the sea are firm believers in the value of the
project: “Traditional motorways and the road network can’t handle any
further increase in goods traffic. The only way forward is to try and
transfer cargo from road transport to shipping. Politicians are doing
a lot to stimulate growth of the Motorways of the Sea venture, for
example with the introduction of the ‘ecobonus’ incentive scheme
for shippers who switch freight transport from the road to the sea.
Italian politics and society are confronted with a huge problem – the
deficiencies of the country’s traditional infrastructure plus the 7,000
e premiano chi trova altre rotte». Lo diceva nel 2004, quando
nessuno aveva voglia di crederci. Lo dice ancora oggi. Perché
l’ecobonus funziona.
ci passano i viaggiatori, i vacanzieri, i lavoratori. Poi ci passa
il futuro. Domani.
andare a dormire ogni notte.
strade, meno ingorghi, meno blocchi, meno incidenti. Allora
non c’entra solo chi col mare fa affari.
C’entriamo tutti. Lavoratori, turisti e imprenditori.
Mediterraneo, sempre: casa nostra, Mare nostrum.
road deaths every year – and there’s a need to find alternative modes
of transport.” Mr Grimaldi argued the same thing in 2004, when nobody
seemed interested, and he hasn’t changed his mind. Because the
ecobonus works. For example: a 4-axle truck carrying a full load and
using a Ro-Ro ferry on the Palermo-Naples route will incur a total cost
of €224 against €561.10 for the same trip by road: less than half, so
twice the value.
Funding for the 2009 ecobonus is on its way. The reader may say: OK,
it’s all an internal matter between shipping entrepreneurs and the government.
But it goes beyond this and must necessarily do so. Because
it involves travellers, tourists and workers. Because it concerns the
future. Tomorrow. The same thing that seafarers ask before they go to
sleep each night. You may or not be an environmentalist or an ecologist,
but there’s a hard fact that can’t be avoided: this is a way of removing
240,000 HGVs from the roads each year. In the last two years
alone (2008-2009) there has been a reduction of 20% in the number of
lorries on the roads compared to 2007. It’s not enough but it’s a very
good start. It means not only less smog but also quicker travel times
for motorists, fewer traffic jams, less congestion, fewer accidents. So
the stakeholders are certainly not just people in the shipping trade.
We’re all involved. Workers, tourists and entrepreneurs. Including
those of us who choose to travel from Civitavecchia to Barcelona by
sea. Madness? Not if you’ve tried it and discovered that the holiday
begins as soon as you park your car in the ferry’s belly and you start
to unwind. Not for people who, starting in January, take advantage
of Grimaldi low cost formula for its Cruise Ferries, which is expected
to lead to an increase of three or four hundred thousand passengers
a year. You depart from Italy and it costs just 25 euros to get to Spain,
Tunisia or Malta.
The Mediterranean forever: it’s our place, Mare nostrum. A huge natural
roadway, but above all part and parcel of our cultural identity. In
France the Sarkozy Government is trying to establish a Mediterranean
Union, i.e. a strategic alliance between all the countries of Europe,
Africa and the Middle East on the Mediterranean rim. Here too, the
past is linked to the future. Supporters of the idea say the region is
ready for political and social integration. Perhaps not. At least not yet:
Europeans and Africans, Africans and Arabs, Arabs and Europeans.
We’re near and far at the same time. We speak different languages,
we sail the same sea. There’s no hurry: you can’t condense 3000 years
of history into just a couple of decades. There’s no need to, either.
When you sail, the atmosphere is different. You move as if you were
approaching a tollgate: you arrive and then leave. The motorway of
the sea is a transit zone, the ports are service stations for our civilisation:
they can’t be all alike, there’s no point forcing people to feel any
more united than they already are. The sea will take care of things.
Tomorrow, always. In the words of the philosopher and greatest expert
on Mare Nostrum Predrag Matvejevic: “I think it’s very dangerous to
reduce the Mediterranean to its past. But that’s what some people try
to do, failing to recognise what the Mediterranean is today and what
it could become tomorrow.”
Traffico merci, la sorpresa viene dal mare
In flessione il trasporto su terra e ferroviario,
cresce il marittimo spinto dall’ecobonus.
Incentivi e infrastrutture per tentare l’operazione rilancio.
sui trasporti.
In linea
con i competitor pubblici europei: tedeschi -26%, francesi
-35% e spagnoli -36%.
Trenitalia-.
Goods traffic,
surprising news from the sea
While there has been a drop in road and rail
transport, shipping traffic has grown thanks to the
stimulus of the “ecobonus” scheme. Incentives
and infrastructure in the drive towards recovery
The global downturn has inevitably impacted on the transport industry.
Italy’s motorways and highways have clearly been less
congested with heavy goods vehicles: according to official sources
(Aiscat-Fai), there were 21 million fewer trucks on the country’s road
network between October 2008 and March 2009. The fall in the volume
of motorway traffic in the first four months of 2009 was around 13%.
conti- osserva Giampaolo Polichetti, presidente dell’ente promozionale
Short sea-.
Catania-Civitavecchia, 900 chilometri, spenderebbe circa 1.100
INFRASTRUTTURE
OVERVIEW
The rail sector has been hit hard; Trenitalia cargo recorded a 33% fall
between January and May 2009, in line with its European competitors
in the public sector: Germany -26%, France -35%, Spain -36%. “The
iron and steel industry, chemicals and vehicle manufacturing have
all come to a standstill,” explains Trenitalia’s Cargo Division Director
Mario Castaldo. “We have confronted the difficulties by increasing our
flexibility and leaving our 2008 prices unchanged. Other sectors seem
to have fared better – for example, cereals and wine: we help export
must in Europe.“
The situation is no brighter in the private sector. “In the first six months
of the year we were down around 20%-25% in terms of volume compared
to 2008,” says Giacomo De Patrizi, CEO of FerCargo (comprising
Sbb cargo, Cfi, Nordcargo, Railion, Railone, Linea, Rtc Italia and Sif).
“Our demands have not been met: no measures have been taken in support
of the sector. We asked for the introduction of a mileage incentive
program for the final customer, but for the time being this is a dead
letter.”
Indeed, it is another incentive scheme – namely the so-called
“ecobonus” (in the 3-year period from 2007 to 2009, 77 million euros
set aside for shippers who shift freight transport from the road to the
so-called “Motorways of the Sea”) – that has enabled shipping to stay
afloat. In actual fact, some traders like the Naples-based Grimaldi shipping
group have seen their business grow. “Despite the crisis, operators
using the Motorways of the Sea network have improved their outlook,”
comments Gianpaolo Polichetti, Chairman of the Italian Short Sea Shipping
Promotion Bureau. “The ecobonus, which is particularly effective
in that it encourages self-employed carriers to try out an alternative
means of transport, provided the start and then the price did the rest.”
“The sea routes,” points out Grimaldi’s Motorways of the Sea Commercial
Director Guido Grimaldi, “only cost half as much as road transport:
a haulage contractor who drives 900 kilometres from Catania to
Civitavecchia spends about 1,100 euros, whereas the cost by ship is
550 euros. ”This difference really makes the difference in a period of
economic recession. “So in the first six months our goods traffic increased
by 14% and our passenger traffic by 20%,” says Mr Grimaldi.
This result was achieved thanks to the growth in fruit & vegetables
and foodstuffs, which offset the falloff in chemicals, vehicles and raw
materials. The Neapolitan company has opened 18 new lines including
a couple to Libya, doubled its capacity between Italy and Greece, and
acquired 28 new vessels due for delivery in the next two years.
INFRASTRUCTURE
On the other hand, Grandi Navi Veloci (Gnv) has sustained a drop of
28% in cargo only partially offset by 5% growth in passenger traffic.
“However, there was a turnaround from June to August,” says General
Director Ariodante Valeri.
The evolution of the Motorways of the Sea project has seen ups and
marenostrum
29
marenostrum
30
downs, partly because of the constraints on its development. The
service is adversely affected by the lack of infrastructure and terminal
facilities. There is about 1 million square metres of space available
for this type of transport on the whole of the Adriatic coast, while on
average each individual Northern European port has a Ro-Ro terminal
for trucks that is bigger than this.
“This is a pity,” comments Mr Polichetti. “It’s a sector that generates
more revenue for the local economy than other forms of shipping.” It
leads to growth both of allied port industries with dedicated personnel
and of the wider economy with logistics areas, reprocessing of products
or simply the provision of facilities for lorry drivers. “Italy has great
potential as the natural hub of the Mediterranean, and the new legislation
allowing private sector operators to invest in port areas will give
further impetus to new projects and the lowering of freight charges,”
Mr Polichetti concludes.
Le due “anime”
dello shopping
Two “approaches”
to shopping
From the chic quarter with designer
stores to truly authentic local markets,
Rome offers a diverse range of often
inimitable styles, including artisans
furthering a centuries-old heritage
marenostrum
via Borgognona e via Frattina.
all'isola pedonale del Pigneto, ex-periferia industriale, oggi
simbolo dell'alta moda romana.
Arrivati a metà
When it comes to shopping, Rome offers two contrasting
approaches for the consumer: one revolving around
international fashion brands, concentrated mainly in the exclu-
sive “Tridente” district running from Piazza del Popolo to Piazza
Venezia and embracing Via del Corso, Via Condotti, Via Borgo-
gnona and Via Frattina; and the other, not to be missed, which
– though more proletarian and grassroots – is still sophisticated
and chic. This is the Rome of design studios, of old workshops
galvanised by new ideas, where tradition often goes hand-in-
hand with creative talent and experimentation. You can see
it if you wander around those traditional working-class areas
that have retained their authentic Roman soul: from the market
in Testaccio, where the nightlife starts with the early evening
happy hour, to the pedestrian precinct in Pigneto, a former
industrial zone that is now one of the capital’s most fashionable
districts, where past and future coexist and the streets teem
with artists and bohemians.
The obvious starting point for any tour of the designer
showrooms must be Via Borgognona, Rome’s haven of haute
couture with fashion icons like Gucci, Roberto Cavalli, Ferrè,
Moschino and Fendi. Valentino’s megastore is just a catwalk
away in Via Bocca di Leone. For women’s shoes the star attraction
is at number 10 Via Borgognona: the shop window of Renè
Caovilla’s boutique gives passers-by a real thrill, with footwear
that is a genuine art form thanks to the extraordinary flair of
the fashion house that has struck up partnerships with the
likes of Valentino, Dior and Chanel. Halfway down the street
you won’t want to miss the chance to go back into history. At
number 9 Via Mario de' Fiori, you will find Sergio Nesci’s tailor’s

all'argento e alle borse. Seguono Damiani e Cartier. Vale
dello shopping: Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Missoni, Dolce
Roma. Ideato come una casa privata di 1.000 mq,
potrete trovare proposte di arredamento, abiti,
design floreale, fragranze, musica, ma
anche la possibilità di concedervi
qualche ora di relax nell'area
beauty o al bar per un
shop, very popular among Rome’s “high society” from the 1950s
onwards: Totò, Vittorio de Sica and the Shah of Persia were all
regular customers here.
Via Condotti is also well worth a stroll, not just for the splendid
boutiques (Dior, Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Armani, Valentino
and Hermes among others), but also on account of the designer
jewellery shops. Bulgari is a dominant force with two outlets: its
Italian flagship store is at number 10 while at number 61 there’s
a brand new branch with accessories including eyewear, perfume,
silverware and bags. Damiani and Cartier are also represented.
It’s worth stopping to take a look at the window at Buccellati,
the original shop that was opened in Rome in 1925 by the family
of goldsmiths, now famous around the world.
Piazza di Spagna is a shopper’s dream come true: Dior, Yves
Saint Laurent, Missoni, Dolce & Gabbana, Sergio Rossi and new
Ermanno Scervino and Massimo Rebecchi boutiques. However,
if by now you’ve had enough of price tags with too many zeros,
why not head for the “temporary shop” in Piazza Mignanelli?
Here until April you can find designer clothes and accessories at
bargain prices. If, on the other hand, you’d rather get away from
it all, then head for Via del Babuino. At number 155 you’ll come
to Tad, the first “concept store” to open in the heart of Rome.
Designed like a large private residence, these 1000 m2 premises
with a lifestyle theme specialise in cross-selling and retail furniture,
fashion, floral design, perfume and music. There’s also a
beauty area and a bar where you can have an aperitif or a light
lunch. Before leaving the city centre, don’t forget to
visit the splendid Piazza San Lorenzo in
Lucina where Car Shoe – the

Quello a piazza
tage, accessori e abiti firmati.
E' in via
marenostrum
brand owned by the Prada Group famous for its signature
driving moccasin – opened a store only a few months ago.
The other facet of Roman shopping, which is more authentic
and full of substance, is best appreciated by a stroll around
the city’s street markets. The one in Piazza Testaccio epitomises
the transition that the area that goes by that name has
undergone in the last decade or so, from a down-to-earth
working-class district to Rome’s new fast-paced hip-hopping
centre of clubbing. Here you will find stalls selling fruit and
fish alongside hawkers displaying antiques and designer clothes
and accessories. Nor will bargain hunters want to miss
Via Sannio, a stone’s throw from the Basilica of Saint John.
But for a real blend of past and present, the place to go is
Pigneto, the quarter just beyond the city walls to the east,
where the old council houses are now inhabited by artists
and intellectuals. Here, the former haberdasher’s, now called
the “Ex-merceria” (at Via del Pigneto no. 57), showcases
Italian design and couture, but the original wall of drawers
has been left intact and is an added attraction for customers.
Meanwhile, at no. 39 Via del Pigneto, Iosseliani – a couple
of Roman goldsmiths – have opened their showroom, in
addition to the one trading in Tokyo. A little further down
the street Lì.boh appeared a few months ago. On the site
of a former bar, this is a venue showcasing the creations of
Rome’s artists. The works displayed and retailed include
furniture, clothing, accessories and futuristic design objects
all strictly made by hand: the resulting mixture is a must for
anyone who likes this sort of thing.
In his Recherche, Marcel Proust suggested that the
real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new
lands but seeing with new eyes. And it might also
help if you’re an adrenaline junkie, if you’re thinking
of entering the incredible world of PortAventura, in
the heart of the Costa Dorada, an hour’s drive from
Established in 1995 as Spain’s answer to Disneyland
still stirring the senses by combining thrills with the
is the breathtaking Tutuki Splash amidst cascading
and head for the shores of Mare Nostrum, you will
see overhead another insane rollercoaster in the
Hurakan Condor, a tribute to the Mayan god of fertility,
Xipe Titec, is another hair-raising experience
– this time with a freefall drop – that has serious
theme park addicts queuing at the entrance. But
the key element at PortAventura is water, especially
since the opening eight years ago of the PortAventura
gigantic waves, as well as the opportunity to chill out
in whirlpool baths or at the lagoon pools with white
The rock of Sant'Angelo seen
marenostrum
A lot has been said and written about the extraordinary
beauty of Sant’Angelo d’Ischia, a tiny fishing village
on the southern side of the lush island, and perhaps
its most appealing and uncontaminated spot. There are
many descriptions of the stunning views and sunsets,
of the little houses crowded around the isthmus and
perched under the tower, of the partly restored dwellings
in the historical centre which, starting from the
Piazzetta, continue as far as Madonnelle, Ruffano and
Fondolillo. This part of the world has drawn tourists
since ancient times and Sant’Angelo d’Ischia in particular
has stood the test of time, retaining its unique appeal
and remaining largely remote and unspoilt.
You can read all about this humpy islet of tufa linked to
the island by the narrow isthmus, extending towards
the sea in a strip of dark sand, a reminder of the area’s
volcanic origins. Sant’Angelo nestles in its own sandy
bay, largely sheltered from the wind. On the right-hand
side of the village is Cava Petrelle where steam emerges
from under the rocks and you can boil an egg in the
sand in less than a minute. Certainly the combination of
natural hot springs, thermal baths, luscious beaches like
the Fumarole, Maronti and Cava Grado, forests, vineyards
and lemon groves, fine hotels and open-air restaurants
is hard to resist. Sant’Angelo winds its way gently
up the tufa ridge of the hill where the old fishermen’s
homes, which have now largely given way to pensioni
and hotels, alternate with flowering terraces and whitewashed
balconies affording breathtaking views. But the
town centres on its famous Piazzetta facing the beach
and the marina, and crowded with little shops, pricey
boutiques, restaurants and bars. A little further along
past the Fumarole beach and heading towards Maronti,
is a path that cuts inland through a mini-gorge to the
famous Terme di Cavascura, where hot springs have
been harnessed for you to pamper yourself thoroughly;
the grottoes, waterfalls and natural spas continue to
pump water down from the craggy summit at the
incredible temperature of 90°C.
That’s enough description of this little bit of paradise
because I want to tell the reader a true and previously
unknown story that was revealed to me by my friend
and colleague Ciro Cenatiempo, who is a local resident
and an expert on Ischia. The time is 1936 and the area’s
conosce ogni angolo ed ogni segreto. Siamo nel 1936. In quell’an-
recita: «Pensione Miramare Sant'Angelo.
Porto a Sant’Angelo.
A Sant’Angelo mancava l’energia
elettrica, non esistevano né farmacia, né ufficio postale. Eppure,
first tourist brochure has just been printed, advertising
as follows: “Pensione Miramare Sant'Angelo. Price for
full board 50 cents per day per person, including wine
and return trip from Ischia Porto by rowing boat.” The
small Pensione Miramare first opened in July 1930. The
idea for the business came from Luigi Mattera’s family.
They realised that this remote, enchanted spot would
have great appeal for adventurous travellers. So they
decided to turn their home into a restaurant with a
few fairly basic guestrooms. Six years later, Luigi’s son
Alberto married Linda Penzel, an enterprising and
single-minded German woman. Together they worked
out ways to develop the family business and Alberto
came up with the idea of a new transport service
bringing tourists from Ischia Porto to Sant’Angelo. He
would provide the service personally, going to pick up
guests in his small rowing boat. At that time, the only
way to get to the seafarers’ houses was via a rough
mule track from Panza. At Sant’Angelo there was no
electricity, no chemist and no post office. Despite this,
the visitors in those years included the likes of Gabriele
D’Annunzio, Queen Elena di Savoia, the actress Elsa
Merlini, Prince Aldobrandini, the German Chancellor
Adenauer, and painters such as Gilles, Kubelik, Neujahr
spontaneamente agli alleati. L’incontro avvenne, in maniera
countries. And it is thanks to the accounts of the
“vine-dressers” Michele, Mario and Jolanda D’Ambra that
Luchino Visconti discovered this corner of the world.
Following the outbreak of World War II the flow of
tourists virtually dried up. In 1941 the Germans established
a military base at the top of Mount Epomeo;
there were about thirty soldiers stationed there, and
they started going to the Miramare, which was run by
their conational Linda. The Germans also made friends
with a number of locals. At the end of 1943, when allied
troops of the 8 th Army landed in Italy, four American
warships also entered Maronti Bay. Some US Officers
went to the Miramare to ask Linda the whereabouts
of the German troops stationed on the island. In typically
forthright fashion Linda replied that there was
no need for any bloodshed and she would make the
necessary arrangements for her compatriots to hand
themselves over to the Allied forces. This duly happened,
on the terrace of the Miramare itself. From then
on – it was September – the Americans also started
coming to Sant’Angelo. At the end of October that year,
a motorboat docked at the pier and a group of noncommissioned
officers got off. One of them, a smiling
and dominant figure, was “Ike” Eisenhower, the future
President of the United States.
molti paesi europei. Rinnovando con intelligenza l’antico
uso terapeutico dell’acqua importato in Nord Africa dai
offered in Tunisia is of a standard that is comparable
to and indeed often exceeds the very best anywhere else. By
further developing the ancient thalassotherapy techniques
originally introduced here when the Romans built their thermal
baths in North Africa (and the archaeological sites are still there
to prove it), in the 1990s Tunisia opened more than thirty spa
resorts all over the country, from the Carthaginian coast to
the island of Djerba, almost all of which based on the formula
of “affordable luxury”. And visitors to this part of the world –
we’re at the Hasdrubal Thalassa & Spa in Yasmine Hammamet,
in the heart of the new tourist district in the town known as
“the Saint Tropez of Tunisia” – will find that the Dolce Vita has
everyone speaks sotto voce, children are not allowed and
people luxuriate in superb treatments tailored to their individual
requirements: here you can wind down and shape up
This 5-star resort south of Cap Bon is a model of excellence
that would be hard to replicate elsewhere. According to the
turismo d’élite in Tunisia.
A costi altamente competitivi.
celebrities, but also wealthy Italian families who come back
year after year. The Hasdrubal Thalassa & Spa is one of the
jewels in the crown of the Hasdrubal Prestige chain owned
by Mohamed Amouri, who pioneered élite tourism in Tunisia.
Even the resorts in Port El Kantaoui and Djerba (where a
second 6-star Prestige Hotel has recently opened) are unable
to match the appeal of this majestic gem designed by the architect
Taoufik Bouslama, with 196 suites the smallest of which is
70 m2 , four à la carte restaurants, 300 employees and a truly
spectacular 5,500 m2 spa which is light and airy, conceived to
pamper guests and stimulate all five senses by combining oriental
opulence with cutting-edge technology. Here you will find
highly qualified masseurs and physiotherapists, state-of-the-art
facilities, age-old techniques, therapeutic facials and body treatments,
natural products and sweetly scented steam baths. The
mild climate most of the year round, the quality of the light,
the obscenely blue Mediterranean and the remarkable properties
of the marine minerals in the seawater are unbeatable
assets. And all at highly competitive prices, because this is the
new total wellness holiday par excellence. Indeed, according
to the latest figures, Tunisia has the second largest number of
thalassotherapy centres in the world, after France.
In between treatments, tourists will be able to enjoy an enormously
varied landscape, with the oasis at Kebili, stone-age
settlements and Matmata, one of the locations for the shooting
of the Star Wars films; Hammamet may have rediscovered its
roots (its very name in Arabic derives from a Turkish word
meaning “baths” or “spa”) but it has lots more to offer the
high-end tourist: superb sea and beaches, two golf courses just
15 minutes away by car, a busy tourist port with a marina and
boutiques, cafés and restaurants offering fine ethnic cuisine,

Long before becoming famous as Bettino Craxi’s place of exile,
Hammamet was a magical and exotic destination for writers
such as Flaubert, painters such as Paul Klee and statesmen
including Winston Churchill. So the cultural landscape is also
very diversified and you will encounter much of contemporary
North African art, with major influences from the Maghreb and
Iraq. In fact, in the breathtaking lobby and endless corridors of
the Hasdrubal Thalassa & Spa, you find yourself surrounded
by a veritable first rate art gallery. All the resorts in the chain,
and notably this one, feature works from the huge private art
collection owned by the Amouri family. The collection, which
was begun in 1970, now covers virtually the whole panorama
of 20th century Tunisian art. This too is part and parcel of the
design concept embracing the total “wellness holiday”.
Su Crocifissu Mannu e Li Lioni, i nuraghi Camusina e
dall’omonima chiesetta arroccata sugli scogli.
marenostrum
P orto Torres, on the banks of the Riu (River) Mannu,
was the very first ancient Roman colony on the island
renowned for the tough native culture known as the nuraghic
civilisation. Founded in 46 BC, the village of Turris Lybissonis
served as a port in the Middle Ages for a succession of
invaders including the Genoese, Aragonese and Pisans; the
latter’s architectural traces are evident throughout the area,
notably in the distinctive Romanesque churches with their
polychrome facades in light and dark shades of stone. But this
is just one piece in the puzzle comprising the history of this
corner of Sardinia. Others include the Roman Palazzo of King
Barbaro and the cathedral of San Gavino in Porto Torres, the
Neolithic monuments of Su Crocifissu Mannu and Li Lioni,
the Camusina and Li Pedriazzi nuraghi (mysterious stone-built
constructions), the Roman bridge on the Riu Mannu and, a
little bit further on, the medieval town of Castelsardo. But the
great thing about northwest Sardinia is that, wherever you go,
there’s always something interesting to see. In particular, the
sea views are simply stunning. The sea offers every imaginable
shade of blue, and it’s hard to resist the temptation to forget
about the hinterland and simply head straight for the superb
swimming spots sheltered by the soft rocky landscape dotted
with sweet-scented Mediterranean maquis.
Starting from Porto Torres, the local shoreline features the
white sand of Renaredda, with its rocky sea bed, Acque Dolci,
named on account of the cold underwater springs, and Balai.
The latter, the trendiest and best known beach in the area, is
sheltered in a picturesque bay with emerald waters and craggy
cliffs, the local landmark being the little church perched on the
rocks above. On the other hand, the most centrally located
coastal strip, crowded with clubs and restaurants, is Scoglio
Lungo, well known for its sculpted dolphin resting on a slab
71
72
riu Mannu, lungo 135 metri e scandito da ben sette arcate
a sesto ribassato.
and for its splendid blue water. Outside Porto Torres, in the
direction of Stintino it’s worth stopping off to have a look at
the ancient Roman bridge over the Riu Mannu; it’s 135 metres
long and has seven segmental arches. A few kilometres further
on, within sight of an Aragonese coastal tower, you come to
Saline beach, a long strip of white pebbles separating the sea
from the pond of the same name, which is a mecca for migratory
birds. The same applies to the nearby Casaraccio pond
where, amidst the dwarf palms and rock roses, you can see
the black-winged stilt, the common eider duck, Barrow's Goldeneye,
the black stork, the pigeon hawk, the merganser, cranes
and flamingos.
Once you go past the former commercial tuna plant at Stintino,
now a luxury hotel, you come to the former fishing village of
Stintino itself. The present site on a tongue of land between
two narrow harbours was settled in 1885 when the inhabitants
of Asinara were forced to move when their island was turned
into an penal colony. Stintino has pastel-coloured houses clustered
around the Porto Vecchio where visitors are attracted
by the inebriating aromas of the little restaurants serving seafood
delicacies like prawns and lobster soup (the Silvestrino
restaurant is well worth a visit). Heading north, beyond Mount
della Crocetta, you come to the idyllic Fornelli strait between
the isles of Piana and Asinara. The sparkling waters, with

From left: local handicraft and procession in the village of Castelsardo
e primeva.
Museo dell’intreccio mediterraneo dove ammirare i caratteristici
cestini e borse dell’artigianato locale.
shades varying from sky blue to green, are reminiscent of the
Caribbean, especially at the nearby Pelosa beach: solitary and
primordial. Continuing on, you come to Capo Falcone, named
after a peculiar geological formation shaped like a falcon’s head.
Dominated by the Pelosa tower (erected by the Aragonese in
1578), this last stretch of Sardinia is a rocky promontory with
fine sand, Mediterranean maquis and the usual transparent
water out of The Last Temptation of Christ, accessible via a convenient
network of paths.
On the other side, towards the east, our itinerary takes in the
tower of Abbacurrente and the historic Platamona lido, where
the 3 km long lake is the natural habitat for many species of
migratory and non-migratory birds. Another highlight of the
natural scenery is at Platamona: golden sand dunes 300 metres
in length and averaging 10 metres in height, dotted here and
there with pine trees, junipers and lilies. Also worth a detour is
the Romanesque monument that is the church of San Michele
di Plaianu. Built entirely of beige limestone in 1082, it’s one of
the most ancient constructions in the area: this is the Municipality
of Sorso, known for the production of Cannonau wine.
Following the countryside lined with rows of vines, you come
back to the coastline, which turns rugged here, with trachyte
cliffs all the way to Castelsardo, the gateway to the region
of Anglona. With its 12 th century castle and striking location
atop a lofty crest, Castelsardo is one of Sardinia’s finest medieval
towns. Highlights include the 16 th century cathedral of
Sant’Antonio Abate with its Aragonese bell tower and splendid
pulpit and altarpiece with Madonna and Child and six angels
playing music. Also not to be missed is the church of Santa
Maria delle Grazie and its Criltu Nieddu (Black Christ) crucifix.
Last but not least is the local Museum of Mediterranean
Weaving, where you can see baskets and bags made by local
artisans (www.castelsardo-info.it).

E’
Escono poi, in processione,
animali possenti: elefanti, rinoceronti, e guerrieri in
armatura, e angeli, e demoni.
a quella occidentale.
At dusk the sun’s rays penetrate the ravines and gorges like
a blade of light. At this time of day, which the locals refer
to as “the hush”, when people and animals return home, the air
is scented and full of golden dust, and every sound is padded.
Even the nonstop flow of the water seems to lessen and the
atmosphere turns unreal. It’s as if a beam of light has chiselled
faces and forms into the rock, sculpting creatures out of the
basalt. And bringing them to life.
The rock appears to start vibrating. And, as if by magic, you
can suddenly make out a face, a hand, an arm, a knight, an elf,
a maiden, a brawny friar, a long-haired wizard with his wand.
Then a procession of mighty animals – elephants and rhinoceroses
– as well as warriors in armour, angels and demons.
The so-called “Gole”, or ravines and gorges, are the vibrant
heart of the Alcantara Valley, in Sicily, where the provinces of
Catania and Messina are separated by the Alcantara river bed.
It’s a place where numerous and very different worlds have
met. The name of the river comes from the Arabic Al Qantarah,
meaning “the bridge”, and indeed it constitutes a bridge, but
much more besides. Once upon a time this valley was the
only route linking eastern and western Sicily. But it was also a
meeting point for peoples, civilisations and religions over thousands
of years on this triangular island.
It’s not possible here to go into any great detail concerning this
valley and its history: entire books have been written on the

place to do sports such as
storia: occorrerebbero volumi e volumi. Meglio procedere
subject. Rather, the idea is to provide an overview – quite literally
– by gliding over the area from the mountains where the
Alcantara has its source and following the course of the river as
far as the point where it flows into the sea at Schisò Beach, just
below Taormina, the pearl of the Ionian.
The Alcantara River is the common denominator linking these
pearls of beauty in what is now a River Park. This nature
reserve was set up in 2001 and comprises 12 Municipalities in
the provinces of Catania and Messina.
There’s also a thirteenth: Floresta, il Casale, which – amidst
pastureland that for centuries witnessed the seasonal movements
of people with their livestock from the Catania plain and
beech-wood forests – is Sicily’s highest comune. This is where
the Alcantara begins. The countryside around here may be a
wilderness of snow and ice in winter, but this certainly won’t
put off anyone who’s ever tasted the local provola: the dairy
farmers make this cheese in all sorts of shapes including seahorses,
doves and puppets.
Santa Domenica Vittoria is another hillside village, offering
some of the finest views over the valley. The atmosphere is
defined by the stone architecture and age-old traditions, like
the Nebrodi black pig salami and fine bobbin work embroidery
marenostrum
handed down by generations of women.
Next we come to Roccella Valdemone, a small artistic hamlet
nestling in the rock. There are no demons here of course: it’s
simply named after the Vallo di Demena, one of the three emirates
into which the Arabs divided Sicily.
Mojo Alcantara is another place whose name is steeped in history,
since it was founded beneath the volcanic mountain with
the peculiar shape that was the site of the valley’s first recorded
eruption. This is the same lava which, eroded for thousands of
years by the waters of the river, brought to light the columnar
basalt in the region. In contrast Malvagna owes its name to
malva, or mallow, a medicinal plant once used against malaria.
Mojo and Malvagna were for many years part of the same
Municipality, known as Lanza. And, with their convents, monasteries
and historic Cubas (cube or square-shaped buildings),
both display the neat and tidy appearance typical of mountain
villages.
On the other hand, Randazzo was and still is very much a town,
once famous for its huge gates and still a veritable medieval
treasure trove where each year at Ferragosto, or the feast of
the Assumption, the Vara – a towering 20 metre high carriage
depicting heaven and supporting children dressed as angels – is
portali medioevali, antichi manieri e affascinanti panora-
altre meraviglie.
This brings us to the two Municipalities that boast the splendid
“Gole dell’Alcantara”: Castiglione – originally Greek and later
a royal city under Norman rule, renowned for its Solicchiata
wine and its monuments, first and foremost the historic Castel
Leone, located on a rocky spur – and Motta Camastra, which,
amidst medieval portals, old manor houses and superb natural
scenery, was one of the locations for Francis Ford Coppola’s
film The Godfather. Next is Francavilla, a place of myths and
woods, Cubas and fountains, as well as a perfectly preserved
Capuchin monastery.
Next to the river is Graniti, home to the sculptor Giuseppe
Mazzullo, and the charming village of Gaggi, whose history is
entangled in stories of stolen saints. Then comes Calatabiano,
with its castles, its famous “breakneck descent” of the statute
of San Filippo Siriaco, and its lovely beach.
On the coast is Naxos, the site of the first Greek colony in
Sicily, and the magnificent settlement at Taormina, with its outstanding
remains. These two resorts are so well known they
need no introduction.
This brings us to the end of our “guided gliding tour” over the
Alcantara Valley. Though at this stage, no doubt you’ll want to
retrace your steps in the opposite direction in search of other
gems along the river!

filarmonica.
periodo dell’anno.
occidentale. Fa parte del patrimonio
mondiale dell'UNESCO e sembra in
effetti un museo a cielo aperto.
La storia di questa città risale
all’VIII secolo a.C. Numerosi popoli
(veneziani, francesi, inglesi, russi)
hanno conquistato l'isola, al fine di
promuovere i loro interessi commerciali
e politici, lasciando la propria
traccia nella civiltà, nella storia e
nel modus vivendi, fino a quando
l’isola è stata unificata al resto
della Grecia nel 1864. Come porto
veneziano, per circa 411 anni, Corfù
è stata denominata “punto chiave”
del mare Adriatico. La posizione
geografica della città, così come la
sua crescita commerciale, sono i
due elementi che hanno garantito la
prosperità economica di Corfù e la
grande crescita culturale e artistica
che ha influenzato il modo di vivere
di tutta la Grecia contemporanea.
be an effervescent melody of a philharmonic orchestra.
And in reality, there are many orchestras to be found here,
as this place loves the arts and really enjoys “the Sweet
Life” in everyday routine. Everything here is ethereal and
different!
The beauty spots of Corfu are not only numerous but
unique as well, offering the traveller various chances for
exploring, entertainment and relaxation, all over the island
and throughout the year. Especially in spring time when the
island seems like a parterre in bloom! Nevertheless, the
magic in this island wanders in the neighbourhoods of the
old quarters, plays the trumpet, and drinks the “tsitsibira” in
Spianada, while watching a cricket
game! The true “experience” of
Corfu begins with and always
ends in the Old Town.
The city of Corfu lies in the east
coast of the island, at the north
side of the Kanoni peninsula
between two imposing castles.
The whole town is of great historical
value and a genuine mixture
of the Greek as well as the
western European civilization. In
its entirety is one of the monuments
of the worldwide legacy of
UNESCO and it looks indeed like
an open air museum.
The story of this city goes back
to the 8th century B.C. Many
conquerors (Venetians, French,
English, Russian) invaded this
island, in order to promote their
commercial and political interests
until the day it was unified
with the rest of Greece in 1864,
leaving their own mark in the
civilization, history and way of life
of the island. As a Venetian port for about 411 years, Corfu
was called the “key point” of the Adriatic sea. The city's
location as well as its commercial growth were the two
elements that granted Corfu economical prosperity and
an extreme cultural and artistic growth that affected the
spiritual life of all contemporary Greece. The first university
was founded here in Corfu, the first printing house, the first
philharmonic orchestra, the first School of Fine Arts. It was
in Corfu that significant personalities of the cultural world
were born. Even today, Corfu is known for its rich cultural
tradition and the vivid musical education of its people. As
an example, on the island there are 18 active philharmonic
orchestras!
The model of the Old Town's urban planning is much different
from the one you can see in the rest of Greece.

veneziani.
all’opera dell’architetto Sanmicheli. Eccezionale monumento
quali 'Panayia i Antivuniotissa',
chiesa che ospita
il Museo Bizantino.
Oltre alla collezione di
icone, che rappresentano
l'evoluzione della pittura
greca ecclesiastica
e il ruolo significativo
di Corfù, è molto interessante
visitare l'architettura
e la decorazione
interna del tempio. Sempre
in quest’area, è possibile
visitare il Palazzo
della regione, residenza
del primo presidente
dello Stato indipenden-
La maestosa scalinata
dell’ingresso del
Palazzo di Achillion
entrance hall of the Achillion Palace
pubblicazioni, ritratti, fotografie e oggetti.
L'imponente edificio in pietra, caserma risalente all'epoca
First of all, architecture in Corfu was largely affected by the
Venetians. The Italian architecture is very well preserved
throughout the city, in the urban planning, the neoclassical
buildings, and the walls even though it was also influenced by
the English and French.
The starting point of our tour is the Old Fortress which
dates back in the 8 th century A.D., even though the way it
looks today is due to the Venetian architect Sanmicheli. An
exceptional monument of defensive technique and architecture,
situated in a small islet, connected with the land by
an iron bridge and consisting of one of the most interesting
sights of the city. As one approaches the monument he is
stupefied by the imposing front with the two ramparts, the
magnificent main entrance and the old wooden door where
the chains for the suspension bridge passed through! Narrow
passages and arcades, embossed venetian emblems, blazons
and inscriptions, cannons here and there depict the interior
of the fortress while the city view, to the historical suburbs
and the sea from this high
– the “tower of the land”
is astonishing. At present,
the fortress hosts all the
documents of the Prefecture
of Corfu, the public
library and services but
generally it functions as a
museum.
From the Old Fortress
to the Old Port there
are several remarkable
sights such as 'Panayia i
Antivouniotissa' a church
that accommodates the
Byzantine Museum. Apart
from the collection of
icons, which depicts the
evolution of the Greek
ecclesiastic painting and the significant role of Corfu, it is
very interesting to see the architecture and the inner decoration
of the temple. Also in this area, you can visit the
building of the county, used to be the house of the first
governor of the independent state of Greece, Ioannis Kapodistrias,
as well as the Museum of Dionisios Solomos at the
poet's house, with an exhibition of publications, portraits,
photos and objects. Our tour ends in the Old Port, which is
used today as an anchoring place for the pleasure crafts and
boats to the neighbouring small islands.
The New Fortress (1570 – 1645) has two large identical
ramparts and is also considered to be an exquisite sample
of defensive architecture. From the entrance to the higher
fortification level, there are arcades, archways and several
open air passages that reveal the unique view from the Old
Town to the sea and the mountains of mainland Greece. The
imposing stone building, from the English occupation, that
dell’occupazione inglese, oggi ospita numerose attività culturali,
piccole e strette viuzze dalle vecchie case in pietra e scoprire
noti come "kantounia”.
tramutata in pietra.
Il punto d’arrivo è Spianada,
(dall’italiano
“Spianata”), che appare
proprio di fronte alla Fortezza
Vecchia. La grande
piazza di Spianada, è il
fulcro della vita sociale
della città, essendo
infatti il luogo di tutte
le sfilate ed i concerti di
orchestre filarmoniche.
Questo grande spazio
aperto è stato utilizzato
in passato per l'organizzazione
della difesa militare
e come campo di tiro.
Oggi in quest’area sorge
La statua di Achille nel giardino
del Palazzo di Achillion
The statue of Achilles in the
garden of the Achillion Palace
edificio in passato ospitante l’“Accademia dello Ionio”,
marenostrum
used to serve as barracks houses today numerous cultural
activities, the Museum of Ceramic Art, a small shop and a
coffee shop. Many theatrical plays and popular events are
organized outdoors during the summer.
On the way to Spianada you must definitely wander through
the small and narrow alleys –with the old stone houses and
discover some unique corners. In these historical quarters,
the tall house buildings with the red and ochre tiled roofs
are very typical. These buildings stand close one another,
forming a labyrinth of narrow alleys known as “kantounia”.
All along the way, one can see the women of Corfu hanging
out their colourful clothes to dry and the traveller, while lost,
discovers silver and wooden carving workshops. With a little
luck, the sound of music enters the scene! The old quarters
of Kambielo offer a genuine and quite charming experience.
The favourite tour of the people of Corfu is at the south
part of the town at the Kanoni peninsula. You can see from
there the bridge that unifies Perama with the peninsula
or visit the verdant Pontikonisi,
which according to
the legend was the boat
that carried Odysseus
in Ithaca and afterwards
turned into stone.
The meeting point
Spianada, (from the Italian
word Spianata), appears
right opposite from the
Old Fortress. It is a huge
and central square, the
core of the social life since
it is the location where all
the parades, the litanies
and the concerts of the
philharmonic orchestras
take place. This large
open space was used in the past for the organisation of the
military defense and as a shooting ground. Today in this
area, lies the unique cricket field of Greece (this sport was
imported by the British) where the local teams practice.
The buildings around Spianada have strong architectural
influences from the West. The Liston, a group of buildings
of French architecture singles out, where in the past, only
the aristocrats that were listed in a certain catalogue could
enter this area and have a walk. Liston was built after Rue
de Rivoli of Paris and today there are coffee shops and
restaurants. At the southern part of Spianada there is an
impressive building which used to lodge the Ionion Academy,
the first university of Greece and nowadays the Ionian University.
The imposing palace of St Michael and George (1824) is a
neoclassical building and the most important monument
from the English occupation. The façade is decorated with a
series of Doric pillars which end up in two magnificent gates
89

cupazione inglese.
India, Corea, Cambogia, Tailandia e Tibet.
580 a.C.), tuttora ben conservato.
Per conoscere le ricchezze
archeologiche dell'isola bisogna
assolutamente visitare il Museo
Archeologico di Corfù, dove
sono conservate molte collezioni
e reperti, provenienti dagli scavi
dell'antica città di Corfù, la Kassiopi
e Thesprotia.
Ultimo ma non meno importante,
il Mon Repos Estate (1831)
è una tappa da non perdere.
Situato sulla collina di Analipsis,
è uno dei luoghi più belli
dell'isola. Il palazzo coloniale
di stile neoclassico è situato
proprio al centro della tenuta, ed
è stato costruito per essere utilizzato
come residenza estiva del
commissario inglese. Residenza
reale estiva dopo l'unificazione
abitanti dell’isola, dall’accento vivace e melodico. Sono così
particolari quanto la propria città.
Il Tempio di San Giorgio costruito dagli Inglesi nel 1840
The Temple of Saint George built by the British in 1840
and are decorated with relief representations of the seven
Ionian Islands. The sumptuous decoration of the interior has
Ionic and Corinthian pillars, relief representations, and fresco
with scenes from the Odyssey. According to the Greek
mythology Corfu was the land of Faeakon, the last but one
stop of Odysseus before he reached Ithaca. After the unification
with Greece the building was used as a royal mansion,
whereas today it hosts the Museum of Asian Art with
10,000 exhibits from China, Japan, India, Korea, Cambodia,
Thailand and Tibet. The same building hosts the Municipal
Art Gallery, which is very interesting and exhibits important
pieces of artists from Corfu, painters and engravers of the
19th and 20th century.
Our tour cannot skip important archaeological sights such
as the Monument of Menekratis (600 B.C) and the well
preserved Doric temple of
Artemis of Gorgos (590-580
B.C.). In order to get to know
the archaeological wealth of
the island you need to visit the
Archaeological Museum of Corfu
where many collections and findings
from the excavations of the
ancient town of Corfu, the Kassiopi
of Corfu and Thesprotia.
Last but not least, the Mon
Repos Estate (1831) is a visit that
one cannot miss. Situated at the
hill of Analipsis, it is one of the
most beautiful locations of the
island. Its impressive colonial
type, neoclassical mansion is
located in the centre and was
built to be used as the summer
residence of the English commissioner.
After the unification with
Greece it was used as a summer
royal residence and finally today
it is a museum open to the
public.
Moreover, if you have some spare time it would be a pity
not to visit Achillion (10 km from the town), a beautiful
mansion with an exquisite collection of works of art. Also,
do walk along the green paths of nature and check out the
beaches with the crystal clear waters and the beautiful mainland
that preserves the traditions and customs of this place.
The local cuisine with its special tastes (pastitsada, bakaliaropita,
sofrito, and many others), but also local drinks and desserts
(robola, tsitsibira, candies, koum-kouat, mandoles) are
definitely worth a try.
Concluding, I would say the best way to get to know Corfu
is to let yourself go and get lost in the “kantounia”, meet the
people with their vivid and melodic accent. They are as special
as their own town.
