Fiatone, polemizzando con la filosofia ionica della natura rivendicava; l'anteriorità del più perfetto rispetto all'imperfetto, dell'anima, che ha la capacità di muovere se stessa rispetto alla materia. L'anima conduce tutte le cose del ciclo, della terra, del mare, le muove con i moti che le sono propri e che hanno nome: ' volere ', ' esaminare ' w . Nel brano riportato da Feuerbach Cudworth concludeva la lunga- citazione da Fiatone criticando quei cristiani che, facendo generare le anime dalla materia, spianavano la via alla negazione della indipendenza della sostanza anima e quindi alla negazione di Dio 70 . È proprio questa impostazione, risalente a Fiatone, che l'Essenza della religione si pro pone di rovesciare avanzando una linea di sviluppo che va dal meno perfetto al più perfetto. È peraltro vero che l'uomo non è diventato ciò che è, per sé solo e per opera propria; aveva bisogno per questo del sostegno di altri enti. Ma questi enti non erano creature soprannaturalistiche, immaginarie, ma enti reali, na turali, non esseri al di sopra, ma al di sotto dell'uomo, come del resto dal basso e non dall'alto, dal profondo della natura viene tutto ciò che sostiene l'uomo nel suo agire conscio e volontario, in quello che, solo, è chiamato comu nemente umano, vengono tutte le sue doti e le sue buone disposizioni 71 . Dall'attributo della perfezione Cudworth passa a quello del- F infinità. L'identificazione fra i due è per lui nodale: si tratta* infatti di confutare l'interpretazione soggettivistica, negativa dell'Hob- bes, che in questo attributo aveva visto un'espressione dell'ignoranza, dello stupore umano 72 e di riaffermare il suo significato obiettivo, posi tivo Feuerbach trascrive: « Infinitatem nihil re vera esse quam per- f e e t i o n e m » 73 , tuttavia annota anche i commenti e le aggiunte in seriti nel testo latino 74 . 68 Leg., X, 891, e, tr. it.
