When the Water Ends
Quando finisce l’acqua
Africa orientale, confine tra Kenya ed Etiopia. Da secoli le tribù
di pastori nomadi della zona hanno legato la loro esistenza alle
due più grandi risorse idriche dell’area, il fiume Omo e il lago
Turkana. L’impatto del riscaldamento globale ha però mutato
profondamente le loro vite e la morfologia di questi luoghi: la
diminuzione delle precipitazioni atmosferiche e i lunghi periodi
di siccità hanno infatti ridotto sempre più la disponibilità di acqua,
generando violenti scontri tra la popolazione locale. Evan
Abramson documenta così uno dei primi conflitti al mondo causati
dal cambiamento climatico.
East Africa, on the border between Kenya and Ethiopia. For centuries,
the life of the pastoral nomad tribes inhabiting the area has
depended on two major water sources: the Omo river and Lake
Turkana. With global warming, however, the tribes’ conditions for
survival and the landscape morphology have changed dramatically:
reduced rainfall and prolonged drought periods have seriously
reduced the availability of fresh water, leading to violent
conflicts among the local tribes. Evan Abramson documented
one of the world’s first conflicts caused by climate change.
