Imej dalam Subjek<br />
Saya melihat kebanyakan karya yang dihasilkan oleh para pelajar dari ketiga-tiga program menjadi terlalu umum yang mana imej atau<br />
subjek tersebut memang sudah dikenali oleh masyarakat kita. Imej seperti kapal nelayan, hidupan laut, siput, imej tumbuh-tumbuhan yang<br />
telah di’awan laratkan’, motif Pucuk Rebung sudah sebati dengan para pelajar jurusan Diploma Seni Lukis & Seni Reka. Hanya gaya<br />
(style), bentuk (form) dan isi yang membezakan imej tersebut dengan imej yang pernah digunakan oleh pelajar sebelum ini. Tugas berat<br />
sentiasa diberikan dengan penuh komitmen oleh para pensyarah yang mengajar pelajar tahun akhir semester 05 agar penyampaian<br />
karya itu sentiasa segar dan berkembang dari masa ke semasa. Kesan daripada proses ini seterusnya bukan sahaja membentuk peribadi<br />
seseorang pelajar yang berfikiran kreatif dan kritis, tetapi membawa pengaruh dan model kepada pelajar baharu pada masa akan datang.<br />
Proses ini terus berlanjutan sehingga generasi seterusnya mengambil-alih, mengurus dan mengawal situasi tertentu mengikut arus<br />
sezaman.<br />
Maka tidak hairan jika kita melihat perubahan gaya pelajar menghasilkan karya bertemakan elemen tradisional sambil mendengar lagu<br />
Marian Hill bertajuk ‘Diggy Down’. Mahupun mendendangkan lagu ‘That’s What I Like’ oleh Bruno Mars sambil mencanting batik. Saya<br />
melihat hal ini sebagai satu arus kemodenan dari segi komunikasi dan teknologi. Jika pelajar dahulu digalakkan untuk membuat kajian<br />
dan mengambil gambar pada subjek tertentu, kini teknologi semasa telah memudahkan para pelajar untuk membuat kajian secara atas<br />
talian. Maka tidak pelik apabila ramai berasa gusar malah kecewa kerana tidak dapat melayari internet atas sebab masalah teknikal<br />
(mungkin juga kerana kehabisan kuota).<br />

Malaysia Batik Designer: From My Perception<br />

Malaysia’s batik flow has developed from traditional to modern high-end style. We have our own palette <strong>of</strong> colors that is classic to the global<br />
taste. Our design and motifs go with the various techniques that diversity in trends and fashion.<br />
For batik to shine in the international scene, Malaysia owns local designers have to first embrace change in the way we perceive batik.<br />
I believe batik has a lot <strong>of</strong> potential and may even one day be one <strong>of</strong> the main exports <strong>of</strong> Malaysia in the same way that textile and fashion<br />
are to countries like Italy, Paris, London and also commonwealth countries.<br />
For me, batik will always have our country’s acceptance in Malaysia and in other countries also. But we have to embrace change in the<br />
way we perceive it. In order for the world to utilize Malaysian batik, it must first be relevant to current fashion trends. I think we must get<br />
away from just perceiving it as a traditional material or craft. The designs, the color palette must match the latest season. And it should not<br />
just be confined to fish, nature and flower motifs, while those are very unique; they may not be what the worlds want.<br />
The future <strong>of</strong> batik is going to be exciting. There are so many opportunities for all artists if local batik makers first learn to improvise on the<br />
production <strong>of</strong> batik. People around the world are now championing the environment. If I can produce batik using ec<strong>of</strong>riendly methods, I will<br />
definitely garner the world’s attention. We believes that the quality <strong>of</strong> work by batik makers in Malaysia has seen significant improvement<br />
and also it is a time <strong>of</strong> taking it to the international level by looking at the branding and marketing aspects.<br />
As shares, I advise that designers should first discover their identity and harness it locally before venturing abroad. Opportunities abound<br />
when they are good at something. They need discover their own mode first and then when presenting their work internationally, they will<br />
know how important the identity can be because people identify you through your designs no matter how varied they are. As an example,<br />
I love abstract design, especially exploring element <strong>of</strong> lines, color and texture with my own style. Overwhelmed by the ravishing elements<br />
<strong>of</strong> lines, color and texture, I was inspired to interpret the emotional expressions <strong>of</strong> spontaneous artwork with the overlapping technique to<br />
create a contemporary modern look design. It is purely derived from my appreciation towards graphic production and the art <strong>of</strong> modern<br />
painting. I like to experiment with different technique <strong>of</strong> water and batik color (remazol). Remazol and water is a unique resource and can<br />
create unexpected visual effects on different fabric surface such as cotton, silk and denim. That is why I always believe that exploration and<br />
experimentation keeps my ideas fresh and I commit myself in changing my batik design every year.<br />
As a designer, we need to spend a lot <strong>of</strong> time in research so that you can create your own identity. Many batik producers or designers don’t<br />
understand the importance <strong>of</strong> research and they get stuck for ideas. That’s when they up copying other designer’s work. For me,<br />
understanding the design principle is a priority if we want to create something new and dare to be different. Inspiration can come from<br />
anywhere and everywhere – your culture, song, color, nature, celebrations, figures, experience and so on. Everything is in your hands. You<br />
are the one to decide which elements will inspire your design.<br />
