Thereis no doubting that he has been one of the most significantintellectuals of his generation. Although a much more low-keypersonality than his friends Abdurrahman Wahid and NurcholishMadjid he belongs he comfortably ranks alongside them. His stylemight be different, and certainly much less public, but he is, in hisown way, their equal. Just as, one imagines, would have been hisdear friend Ahmad Wahib.
