Hampir 12 bulan tertunda terbit, hampir 12 bulan 

juga mengecewakan banyak pihak dan mengecewakan 

diri sendiri. Tapi ya apa mau dikata, kita ini sekumpulan 

orang cuek yang akhirnya dengan cueknya 

nerbitin majalah tattoo gratisan. 

Susah ya lumayan..tapi ya mau gimana lagi. Hehehehe.. 

Mengapa majalah tattoo Tentu kami bukan sekumpulan 

orang cerdas yang bisa menjelaskan sejarah 

ataupun tetek bengek tattoo. Tapi yang kami lihat 

bahwa tattoo telah menembus batas-batas kelas. 

Kita bisa melihat cerita-cerita dan imej buruk yang 

berdampingan dengan tattoo..itu dulu. 

Hari ini, kita bisa melihat tattoo ditubuh semua orang 

dari berbagai kelas, baik pria dan wanita. Kalain bisa 

ke tempat paling gaul sekalipun dan akan menemukan 

orang yang bangga dengan tattoonya, atau kalian 

bisa pergi ketempat paling kumuh sekalipun dan 

kalian menemukan orang yang juga bangga terhadap 

tattoo yang ada dibadannya. 

Bahwa entah hanya sekedar ikut-ikutan, atau untuk 

gaya-gayaan, ataupun dengan maksud pemberontakan. 

Kita harus mengakui bahwa ada satu kesamaan. 

Yaitu, kita sealu bangga dengan tattoo kita. 

Dan buat orang yang tidak ataupun belum mempunyai 

tattoo..jangan kecewa, karena semua orang punya 

kemungkinan dan peluang untuk memiliki tattoo.. :) 

So, nikmati saja edisi perdana kita, edisi penuh cobacoba 

dan penuh hura-hura...daripada tidak melakukan 

apa-apa...seperti kata pepatah ...

ARTIST PROFILE 

MR. 

Tokoh yang satu ini adalah artist tato yang sudah lama 

berkecimpung di Bali. Juga salah satu orang yang membuat 

seni tato berkembang seperti saat ini. Belajar dan 

konsisten, itu adalah kunci sukses dari Alit. Kepercayaan 

klien yang terdahulu membuat namanya besar dikalangan 

para pecinta tato, tentunya dengan hasil yang memuaskan. 

Jadi, tidak perlu membuka studio didaerah wisatawan 

untuk mencari klien. Berikut adalah obrolan Magic 

Ink dengan Alit. 

Halo bli Alit, apa kabar 

Baik..

Nggak..santai aja. 

ALIT TATTOO 

Ok..dari banyak jenis kategori tato, Bli Alit cenderung 

ke kategori apa 

Saya tidak cenderung kemanapun..hampir semua kat- 

[] Magic Ink 

egori saya bisa membuatnya. Karena di Bali tidak bisa 

cuma mengambil satu kategori saja, semuanya harus 

bisa dikuasai. Dengan begitu saya terus dan terus belajar, 

karena perkembangan tattoo selalu berubah. 

Dibagian tubuh mana yang Bli Alit suka untuk di 

tattoo 

Di lengan, itu yang paling enak buat saya untuk di tato. 

Kalo peralatan tato, dapet dimana 

Kalo peralatan dari dulu saya selalu order dari luar. 

Ceritain dong tentang studionya Bli Alit 

Studio saya dari dulu sampai sekarang ga pernah pindah, 

dirumah. Dulu pertama buka studio didalam rumah. 

Karena waktu itu seni tato masih dipandang sebelah mata 

oleh masyarakat. Dan juga belum bisa menjamin hidup 

hahaha. Saya buka studio sambil kuliah waktu itu. Karena 

kuliah ga selesai-selesai, akhirnya saya berhenti kuliah 

dan menjadi tukang tato hahaha Baru saya buka studio di 

depan rumah sampai sekarang. 

Bisa ceritain bagaimana awalnya jadi artist tato 

Dulu awalnya saya seneng lukis dan suka ngegambar. 

Tahun 80-an saya belajar seni tato sama kakak saya 

Gede Surya. Dia artist tato pertama di Bali. Di studionya 

dia saya belajar bikin tato setiap hari sama Gede Surya. 

Pokoknya Gede Surya itu guru saya yang menjadikan 

saya artis tato. 

Kenapa tertarik sama seni tattoo 

Awalnya saya cuma coba-coba saja, tapi lama kelamaan 

saya jadi lebih suka melukis di kulit daripada di kanvas. 

Dilihat dari tingkat kesulitannya, tato lebih menantang.. 

haha 

Terus, siapa orang yang pertama kali Bli Alit tato 

Waduh siapa ya...lupa saya, pokoknya ada temen saya, 

lupa namanya. Waktu itu masih standar, bikinnya motif 

bunga kalo ga salah. 

Kenapa ga buka studio di daerah Kuta 

Saya merasa lebih senang kerja di rumah. Lagian kalau 

buka studio lagi capek mengontrol pegawai. Mendingan 

buka di rumah saja, bisa lebih santai haha. Tapi kadang 

saya juga terima panggilan dan bikin tato di hotel klien. 

Asalkan lagi low season, kalo high season jalanan macet, 

waktu jadi kebuang dijalan. 

Menurut Bli Alit. bagaimana perkembangan tattoo 

saat ini 

Bagus sekali, sudah bisa menyamai didaerah luar. Alatalat 

dan skill artist tatonya juga sudah bagus. Dan tato 

juga sudah tidak dipandang sebelah mata lagi, meskipun 

masih ada tapi tidak sebanyak dulu. 

Apa rencana kedepan untuk tattoo 

Apa ya..kayaknya ga ada, jalanin aja yang sekarang dulu.

Good. 

Tell us the stories which made you as a tattoo artist 

I was keen on painting and drawing. In 1980 I learned tattoo 

with my brother Gede Surya. He is the first tattoo artist in 

Bali. In his studio, everyday I learned with him.

Why do you interested in tattoo 

The first time, I just try it and as time goes by, I am more 

interested in painting on skin than on canvas. And painting on 

skin has more challenges. 

Then, who was the first your client 

I don’t remember the name, but he is my friend for sure. And 

the motif was so standard, a flower, if I’m not getting any 

mistake. 

From all of the kind of tattoo, which one do you prefer 

I am not concerning in one of them. Coz in Bali you can’t only 

take one category, you have to capable in all category. Therefore 

I always learn and learn, coz tattoo always change. 

Which part is your favourite to be tattooed 

Leg, that’s the best part 

Where did you get your tattoo equipments 

I got them by ordered it from abroad 

Tell us about your studio 

It has been at my house since the first time coz tattoo used to 

be taboo and also couldn’t guarantee my living cost. And I decided 

to quit my study and became a tattoo artist since then. 

Why don’t you own a studio around Kuta 

I am more excited working at home. Chill and I don’t have to 

manage employee. But sometimes I go to my client’s hotel to 

make tattoo. 

What do you think tattoo nowadays 

It becomes marvellous, including tattoo artist itself, the equipments 

and also the capabilities. And it becomes more familiar. 

Until when you’ll be exist as a tattoo artist 

As long as I am able to make tattoo, then I’ll be it. 

Future plan for tattoo 

Nothing, just go with the flow

loh, kenapa Kan muka lo masih cocok lah dimirip-miripin 

abg jaman sekarang, biar gaya dikit, 

apalagi lo kan ganteng.. (apa mata gue lagi siwer

makin banyak punya groupie…kasian temen2 gue tar yang

to be honest, orang yang bertatto tuh cuma orang yang 

kekurangan aksesoris aja (loh,tetep ga serius yaahaha) 

nah loh..kalo tiba-tiba jodoh lo ternyata orang yang 

bertattoo ato mungkin tattoo artist barangkali 

gimana dong 

ya terserah dia sih, gue bukan tipe yang ngatur orang.. 

who knows kan kalo one day gue juga pengen bikin tattoo

When did you get your first tattoo and what is it 

In 2001, I got a tribal tattoo. 

Quite a while ago yeah, who was the artist 

It was Gusti in Kemang-Jakarta

So how did you tell your family about it 

It was my 17th birthday and I told my family it was a temporary 

tattoo hahaha...but eventually they realised. Because it 

wasn’t a problem for them I kept on getting more hahaha 

Haha really..so how many tattoos do you have now 

Oh..I’ve never counted them, I forget...a lot though.. hahaha 

Which tattoo is your favourite and what is it’s 

meaning 

I love the goldfish on my left hand which was 

done by my friend from Italy. This tattoo is for 

my mum. 

Do you have any tattoos that you got for 

someone or because of a certain moment 

Yup..I got a tattoo for my mum, dad and friends 

I grew up with. I have a tattoo I got with my 

friends that says ”teman xoxo”, so each one of my 

friends tattoed a letter each. 

How do your tattoos affect your job 

Not a problem...they could see that I had them and 

tattoos don’t interrupt my work!! 

Do you have plans for more tattoos in the future 

For sure hehe 

How would you feel if you were the Indonesian 

representative in Miss Universe 

Oh no..I’ve never even thought about it. 

And if you won What would be the first thing 

you would do

Tahun 2001, gw bikin tato tribal.

Gw suka tato ikan koi di tangan kiri gw, yang buat tato ini

Ada ga tato yang lo buat untuk seseorang, atau 

karena moment tertentu 

Yup..gw pernah bikin tato buat nyokap, bokap, sama sahabat-sahabat 

gw yang berpengaruh sama hidup gw. Gw 

punya tato yang dibuat sama temen-temen gw. 

Tulisannya ”teman xoxo”, jadi temen-temen gw 

itu nato gw satu orang satu huruf. 

Bagaimana dengan tattoo dan 

profesi lo saat ini 

Ga terlalu bermasalah tuh..soalnya 

mereka melihat gw apa adanya. Dan 

tato juga ga ngeganggu pekerjaan kok. 

Ada rencana kedepannya untuk membuat

On this tattoo fans edition, Magic Ink held an interview 

with Paulus Panggabean. Country Manager Hard Rock 

Cafe Indonesia. Father of 3 children is willing to meet 

Magic Ink during his busy day. Short conversation about 

his life (family), music, dream, and also tattoo. And below 

is detail of our conversation. 

Paulus Panggabean 

Saya orangnya sangat easy going, gak suka ribut, penikmat 

art,dengerin musik, suka mengikuti teknologi, malas, 

gampang percaya. Tipikal pisces lah. 

Pekerjaan 

Awalnya saya sekolah perhotelan di NHI Bandung.Kebetulan 

pada tahun ‘89 saya kerja di kapal dan di setiap 

pelabuhan biasanya ada Hard Rock dan saya selalu sempatkan 

ke Hard Rock. Dan Pas tiba-tiba saya baca kompas 

ada lowongan di Hard Rock, langsung hari itu juga saya 

lamar. Dan keuntungan saya ketika di interview adalah 

saya tau seluk beluk Hard Rock karena saya memang 

seorang Hard Rock’ers. Itu saya bersaing hamppir dengan 

ribuan pelamar. 

Jadi tahun ‘92 saya salah satu dari 4 orang manager 

di Hard Rock. Dan hanya saya yang lulusan Bandung, 

yang lain lulusan luar negri semua. Dan diantara 4 orang 

tersebut hanya saya yang masih bertahan. Pada tahun ‘98 

saya sempat keluar, lalu kerja di Fashion Cafe selama 3 

tahun, terus ditawarin balik sama bos dan akhirnya saya 

balik ke Hard Rock. Dan sejak 2 tahun yang lalu saya 

menjadi country manager di Hard Rock. 

Lebih banyak sukanya dari dukanya. Sukanya ketemu 

banyak orang dengan semua kesamaan, yaitu suka 

musik. Dan sebenarnya syarat utama kerja di Hard Rock 

adalah suka musik. Dukanya adalah saat bom bali tahun 

2002 dan 2005. Dampak setelah bom bali berasa banget, 

kita semua serasa mulai dari nol lagi. Dan saya sempat 

dituntut mengurangi pegawai, tapi tidak sampe terjadi. 

Buat saya, kita bisa survive 2 kali bom tanpa mengurangi 

pegawai, itu sangat luar biasa. 

Setelah 21 tahun, baru anak saya boleh tatoan.Saya anggap 

21 tahun itu sudah dewasa, dia bisa memilih gambar 

tidak pakai emosi. 

Pingin banget buka studio tato, pingin belajar tato juga. 

Tapi tidak ada waktu, karena kan latihannya harus rutin. 

Musik 

Papa saya guru musik, jadi dari kecil saya hidup oleh 

musik. Tapi yang saya sesalkan saya tidak sempat belajar 

main musik. Saya hanya bisa main drum, Papa saya guru 

piano. Pokoknya “music is my life”. 

Dari segi kualitas musik indonesia tidak kalah dari luar negri, 

hanya mungkin dari segi bisnis saja. Saya suka semua 

jenis musik yang pakai skill.Jazz, Rock. Sebetulnya punya 

idola, saya suka tapi sudah tidak suka lagi. Saya suak 

Metallica sampai album Justice For All. Yang saya suka 

kebanyakan sudah bubar. Saya suka Faith No More, Jane’s 

Addiction, RATM, RHCP. 

Untuk Band Bali.SID saya suka,Discotion Pill, Navicula. 

Kalau band luar bali, Upsatair dan The Brandals saya 

suka. Band-band indie saya suka, indie lebih asik. 

Mimpi 

Banyak banget yang belum kesampaian, 

saya ingin tato seluruh 

badan, saya ingin keliling dunia. 

Tapi itu bukan yang utama.Mimpi 

saya hanya bagaimana untuk 

selalu menjadi lebih baik. 

Lahir Kembali 

Kalau saya dilahirkan kembali 

saya jadi diri saya sendiri, 

karena saya mau jadi orang 

lain gak tau. Tar jadi Brad 

Pitt, belum tentu enak 

hidupnya, siapa tahu Brad 

Pitt dimarahin terus sama 

istrinya. Lagipula kalau 

saya jadi diri saya sendiri, 

kan saya bisa perbaiki 

yang kurang-kurang. 

Keluarga 

Ya ini memang agak klise, tapi yang paling berjasa ya 

orang tua. Orang tua saya memberi saya kebebasan. 

Artinya saya mau pakai tato, mau pake anting terserah 

asal resiko tanggung sendiri.Yang bisa bikin saya kayak 

sekarang ya merekalah. 

Bisa dibilang tujuan utama hidup saya untuk keluarga dan 

semoga bisa menghidupi keluarga dengan baik. Setiap 

ada waktu luang saya selalu pakai untuk keluarga. 

Tato 

Tato pertama saya yang paling berkesan, karena itu yang 

pertama. Selain yang pertama itu, Tato Ghandi itu paling 

berkesan, Karena halus banget, tato itu bikinan Mahyar.

I am a very easy going person, I don’t like noise and I enjoy art, 

music & technology. I am lazy and quite gullible..a typical Pisces 

Occupation 

I went to hospitality school at NHI in Bandung. In 1989 I worked 

on a cruise ship and at every port there was a Hard Rock and I 

would always stop by. One time I was reading Kompas newspaper 

and saw that Hard Rock was advertising for staff so I applied 

straight away. Luckily at the interview I knew all the ins and outs 

of Hard Rock as I was a Hard Rocker, because I was competing 

with thousands of other applicants. 

PAULUS 

TATTOO’S 

COLLECTION 

In 1992 I was one of 4 managers at Hard Rock. I was the 

only one who had graduated from Bandung, the others had all 

studied overseas. Out of the 4 I am the only one still working for 

Hard Rock. I left Hard Rock in 1998 to work for Fashion Cafe for 

3 years and then I was asked to come back to Hard Rock. For 

the last 2 years I have been country manager at Hard Rock. 

There are many more pluses than minuses. I get to meet many 

people who also love music. One of the requirements to work 

at Hard Rock is to love music. Unfortunately after the bombs 

in 2002 and 2005 we felt like we were starting from nothing all 

over again. I was told I would have to let some of the employees 

go but in the end I didn’t. I think it’s amazing that we have 

managed to survive 2 bombs without having to cut back any 

employees. 

Family 

I know it’s a cliché but my parents are the best. They gave me 

freedom when I wanted a tattoo and pierced ears they didn’t 

mind, it was up to me to decide. They have made me who I am 

today. I could say that the main purpose in my life is my family 

and I hope to always support them well. Any spare time I have I 

spend with my family. 

Tattoos 

My first tattoo is the most impressive because it was the first. 

Apart from that first one the Ghandi tattoo is the most impressive 

because it’s really well done by Mahyar. 

My kids can get a tattoo when they are 21. I think at 21 they are 

already adults and can choose a design without emotion. 

I’d love to open a tattoo studio and learn how to tattoo but I 

don’t have the time to practice regularly. 

Music 

My father is a music (piano) teacher so I grew up with music but 

unfortunately I didn’t learn to play music myself. I can only play 

the drums. Basically “music is my life”. 

From the quality aspect Indonesian music is on a par with 

international music but it cant compete on a business level. I like 

all types of music that require skill such as jazz and rock. Some 

music I used to like I don’t like any more. I like Metallica up 

until the album Justice for All. A lot of the bands I like have now 

broken up. I like Faith No More, Jane’s Addiction, RATM, RHCP. 

Bali bands I like are SID, Discotion Pill, Navicula. Outside of Bali I 

like Upsatair and The Brandals. I also like indie bands. 

Dreams 

Still many dreams to achieve. I want to tattoo my whole body 

and I want to travel around the world. But that’s not the most 

important. My dream is how to make everything better. 

Rebirth 

If I was born again I would want to be myself because I don’t 

know who else I would rather be. I wouldn’t want to be Brad 

Pitt, I’m not sure how good his life really is, who knows, he could 

be angry with his wife all the time. If I was reborn as myself I 

could fix my shortcomings. 


EVENT 

Hard Rock University 

-class of 2009- 

Garasi & Kotak 

10 Desember 2009, Garasi dan Kotak menggebrak 

Hard Rock Cafe Bali. Sejak pukul 9 malam para 

pengunjung sudah meramaikan halaman depan Hard 

Rock Cafe. Padahal Garasi baru naik panggung pukul 

11 malam, telat 1 jam dari yang dijadwalkan. 

Pukul 00.30 WITA, KOTAK akhirnya naik panggung. 

Memborbardir dengan lagu-lagu andalan mereka yang 

sedang naik daun. Penonton nyaris tidak bisa bergerak 

sepanjang malam, penuh sesak. 

Kolaborasi antara..musik, bau ABG (like this), koor 

bareng, kilatan blitz kamera...dan sedikit keringat..

Suicide Suspension 

@ Suku-Suku Tatau 

As the name suggests ‘Body Suspension’ means hanging 

from a rope tied to a hook piercing the body. One afternoon 

Albar Tikam from Suku-Suku Tatau studio put on a 

display called “Suicide Suspension” in front of his studio. 

The spectators saw Dimas hanging from a hook piercing 

his back for 30 minutes, which he did without any sort 

of safety net. Here is our interview with Albar and Dimas 

after their performance which required good knowledge of 

anatomy and psychology and of course conviction…! 

So, can you tell us about ‘suicide suspension’ 

Albar : Yeah, I have actually been studying suspension 

technique for about 3 or 4 years now, but have only just 

achieved doing it now. I studied from books, websites and 

asked lots of questions. I have only now found someone 

who wanted to be my model…hehehe. Search on the net 

for ‘Safir Musafar’, he’s a body suspension expert and my 

idol. 

What is the biggest challenge for you in doing this 

Dimas : For me it’s the pain when the hook pierces my 

back but the worst pain is when they start lifting my body 

up. 

Albar : The hanging is the biggest challenge. If I insert the 

hook too deep or not deep enough there is a risk of tearing. 

Why do you think Dimas is able to do this 

Albar : Maybe because he trusts me, trust is a huge factor 

in this. 

If Albar wants to do this again will you still be his 

model 

Dimas : Yes but I want to do it a bit differently, with more 

pain and hanging longer…maybe I could handle it for 1 ½ 

hours…hehehehhehe 

Can anybody do body suspension or just certain 

people 

Albar : It depends on their skin, it requires a precise characteristic. 

If the skin is too hard it won’t work, but most 

people could do it. 

What is the biggest risk with body suspension 

Albar : The skin could tear or the person could lose 

consciousness. The risk of death is small, the worst thing 

would be for the skin to tear. 

Ok, how does it feel For Dimas as the model and 

for Albar as the artist 

Dimas : Nervous, for sure..the first 10 minutes. But I 

forced myself to believe that I could do it and then the 

nervousness went away. 

Albar : After we finished I kept looking at the photo of me 

standing next to Dimas hanging and I felt like a butcher… 

hahaha…no..I really felt like I had satisfied my spirit. 




Band Interview 

NOSSTRESS 

Tiga orang remaja paruh baya mencuri perhatian disebuah 

acara kecil yang membuat kami memutuskan untuk tukeran 

nomor hp dan melanjutkan obrolan . Kupit (Rhythm Guitar/ 

Vocal), Angga (Lead Guitar/Vocal), Cok (Cajon/Harmonika/ 

Backing vocal) terbentuk sejak tahun 2008 dan sudah menciptakan 

8 buah lagu yang siap mereka dendangakan dan 

mungkin saja mereka rekam. Tanpa tattoo ditubuh mereka, 

bukan berarti mereka tidak ingin. Mengutip kata-kata si Kupit 

bahwa “semua orang punya peluang untuk punya tattoo”, 

termasuk mereka bertiga…so, berikut interview Magic Ink 

dengan para personil nosstreess……. 

Certain dikit donk tentang band kalian.. 

Angga : Kita bertiga awalnya ngeband karena fun aja, dulu 

nosstress sempat juga ngeband dengan formasi 7 orang. 

Tapi akhirnya kita mutusin untuk ngeband bertiga aja. Kita 

sempat vakum juga hampir 1 tahun. 

Kupit : Bukan kita sih yang vakum, tapi personnil yang lain. 

Kita sih lanjut terus. 

Serius..gw gak pernah denger nama band 

kalian,Hehehe. Tapi gw heran kok kalian bertiga bisa 

keren semua sih suaranya 

Angga : Kebetulan kita berdua (Angga & Kupit –red) pernah 

jadi anggota paduan suara di SMA 7..kalo si Cok dulu anak 

punk..tapi anak punk kan biasa sengaja dijelek2in suaranya.. 

aslinya sih suranya emang bagus. 

Cok : Eh rock n roll sih..bukan punk..banyak yang bilang 

suaraku mirip Ipang. 

Lagu yg judulnya sampah keren bgt…critain dikit 

donk 

Angga : Kupit tuh yang bikin…dulu kita pernah ikut yayaysan 

one dollar for music..aku kebetulan sempat jadi operasional 

manajer..trus aku ngerasa jadi kantong sampah..hahaha.. 

disitu inspirasinya.. 

Cok : Dan juga karena kita peduli sampah… 

Untuk kedepannya apa misi kalian selanjutnya.. 

Kupid : Buat album….selanjutnya goin with the flow aja.. 

Damn..aku blm pernah liat band lokal bisa cover lagu 

radiohead keren bgt..kok bisa ya 

Angga : Mungkin kalo dibilang teknik juga bukan..tapi itu 

mungkin alam bawah sadar..dan emang suaranya Kupit pas 

untuk lagu-lagu seperti itu.. 

Kupid : Dan kita emang tidak pernah dikonsep untuk main 

kayak gimana..mengalir aja.. 

Kenapa sih kalian gak punya tattoo 

Angga : Sebenarnya, kenapa harus punya tattoo untuk jadi 

anak band..kenapa harus ngerokok untuk jadi anak band.. 

pokoknya yg penting jadi diri sendiri.. 

Kupit : Hmmm..aku sebenarnya pingin punya tattoo, tapi 

belum dapet restu..Hahaha 

Angga & Cok : Tapi ya sebenarnya kita pengen juga..tapi 

tunggu sukses dulu.. 

Apa tanggapan kalian ttg tattoo.. 

Cok : Tattoo itu merupakan lukisan tubuh..seni aja..jadinya 

pecinta tato itu bukan berarti kriminal..itu bagian dari seni. 

Angga : Semua berawal dari seni..apresiasi gambar kan gak 

terbatas kertas..badan juga bisa.. 

Kupit : Tattoo ya….seni…seni ekspresi…pengindahan tubuh.. 

Gimana rasanya band yang personilnya gak punya 

tato diinterview sama majalah tattoo.. 

Cok : Ya unik aja…aneh aja…istimewanya disitu… 

Angga : Aku malah lagi bertanya..kok majalah tattoo bisa 

interview band yang personilnya gak punya tattoo.. 

Kupit : Karena semua orang punya peluang untuk punya 

tattoo, jadi siapa tau bulan depan kita semua udah punya

Your tattoo is in a visible place on your body, it could be holding you 

back from getting a new job.

quality of the tattoo design.

That’s why today’s improved tattoo removal techniques are good news for 

many people. That having been said, tattoo removal is still not quick, easy 

or cheap. In fact, it may turn out to be substantially more expensive and 

painful than it was to get the tattoo in the first place, so no one should 

make the decision to get a tattoo with the idea that it can be removed 

later on if you change your mind! 

The good news, though, is that the end result of tattoo removal is quite 

good these days. Tattoos can successfully be removed, though it takes a 

bit of research and effort. 

Tattoo Removal Creams 

The difficulty inherent in removing tattoos is related to tattooing technique. 

When you get a tattoo, the ink is deposited in the dermis, the lower 

layer of skin. That’s why it can’t be rubbed off, and why the ink-laden skin 

is not shed and renewed. In case of tattoo removal that deep layer of skin 

needs to be accessed. This is why you shouldn’t trust the so-called tattoo 

removal cream that sometimes comes on the market – tattoo removal 

creams are very unlikely to be effective. 

Chemical Peel 

Other, more ‘drastic’ tattoo removal methods do work. One proven method 

is tattoo removal by chemical peel, which progressively removes layers 

of skin and, eventually, the tattoo design. Sometimes acid is used in that 

process – this is known as trichloroacetic acid tattoo removal. 

A process call microdermabrasion, which essentially ‘sands’ the skin, is 

also used to remove tattoos. In the past small tattoos were sometimes 

removed surgically. The problem with all of these methods is that they 

tend to cause scarring. For people really determined to get rid of a tattoo, 

this might be acceptable – but for many, it was a catch-22. If the object is 

unblemished skin, a scar really isn’t any better than a tattoo. 

Laser Tattoo Removal 

Luckily, some new methods for tattoo removal were developed in the late 

1980s, and have been used with increasing success ever since. One of 

these is infrared coagulation tattoo removal, and the other – the most 

popular modern method, in fact – is laser tattoo removal. This highly 

effective and relatively painless method is very successful, and doesn’t 

leave a scar. It is expensive, though – while getting a tattoo generally cost 

$100 - $200, depending on the intricacy of the tattoo, removal of that 

same tattoo might cost you up to ten times that amount!
