Alpha 5 - Imbak Canyon
Imbak Canyon is one of the last remaining untouched and relatively
unexplored areas of rainforest in Sabah. More people have been to
Everest Base Camp than have visited this primary conservation area.
It is home to wildlife including elephants, orangutans and rare birds.
Imbak’s ecological value means that future conservation is vital.
Previously Raleigh has worked with Yayasan Sabah (a government
institute) to create vital infrastructure for scientists visiting the area.
The building of this infrastructure helped Imbak Canyon achieve Class
1 protection in December 2008, preventing future logging .
Alpha Five has continued this work with Yasasan Sabah, starting on
the foundations for a second suspension bridge offering year round
access to the whole of the protected area. These areas have yet to be
fully explored and this will give scientists access for further research.
Groups have taken full advantage of being in this area, getting up early
to spot gibbons and hornbills. Groups have also taken part in night
treks where they have learned more about this pristine environment.
For many the highlight has been their daily swim under the magnificent
Imbak Waterfall.
