ENVIRONMENTAL MESRA ALAM BORNE A N SU N B E A R CO NSERVAT I O N C E N T R E Alpha 4 - Sepilok Groups at Alpha Four took part in work on the new Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre at Sepilok. The sun bear is the smallest of the nine bear species in the world. Its numbers are decreasing and little is known about the animal. Conceived by prominent researcher Wong Siew Te (M.Sc), this is a unique and exciting conservation initiative. The new centre will raise awareness and allow for the rehabilitation of captive and orphaned bears. The project is being overseen by LEAP, who is working very closely with two Sabah government bodies: the Department of Forestry and the Department of Wildlife. Raleigh has made a long term commitment to this project with future groups committed to construction projects across the centre. During Expedition 10A, Raleigh groups built a new bridge and boardwalk, providing access for future visitors to the centre. During the project, groups visited some of the bears that will be released into the new centre. Throughout the expedition groups stayed at the Sepilok Jungle Camp, an eco friendly camp constructed by volunteers on a previous Raleigh expedition. Kumpulan-kumpulan di Alfa Empat telah mengambil bahagian dalam kerja-kerja pembinaan Pusat Konservasi Beruang Madu Borneo yang baru di Sepilok. Beruang madu merupakan spesis beruang yang terkecil di antara sembilan spesis beruang yang terdapat di dunia dan terdapat maklumat yang terhad tentang beruang ini. Inisiatif konservasi yang hebat ini merupakan hasil kerja penyelidik yang terkenal, Wong Siew Te (M.Sc). Pusat yang baru ini akan meningkatkan kesedaran dan membenarkan rehabilitasi beruang-beruang madu yang hidup dalam kurungan. Projek ini dipantau oleh LEAP yang turut berkerjasama dengan Jabatan Perhutanan dan Jabatan Hidupan Liar. Raleigh telah menjanjikan komitmen jangka masa panjang untuk projek ini. Pada masa akan datang, Raleigh akan terlibat dengan projek-projek pembinaan pusat ini. Semasa ekspidisi 10A, Raleigh telah membina jambatan dan laluan untuk pelawat-pelawat yang bakal mengunjungi pusat ini. Semasa ekspidisi ini, kumpulan-kumpulan Raleigh telah berjumpa dengan beruang-beruang yang bakal dilepaskan ke dalam pusat konservasi yang baru. Kumpulan-kumpulan Raleigh telah menginap di Kem Hutan Sepilok, sebuah kem mesra alam yang dibina oleh kumpulan sukarelawan Raleigh yang sebelumnya. 7
MESRA ALAM E N V I RONMENTA L I N F R A ST R U K T U R I N F R A ST R UCTURE Alpha 5 - Imbak Canyon Kanyon Imbak merupakan salah satu kawasan hutan yang terakhir yang belum pernah diterokai manusia di Sabah. Lebih ramai orang telah mengujungi Kem Pusat Everest daripada yang pernah mengunjungi hutan hujan ini. Kanyon Imbak merupakan habitat kepada haiwan liar seperti gajah pigmi Borneo, orang-utan dan burung-burung yang jarang dijumpai. Nilai tinggi ekologi Kanyon ini bermaksud pemeliharaan kawasan iniadalah sangat penting untuk masa depan. Sebelum ini Raleigh berkerjasama dengan Yayasan Sabah untuk membina infrastruktur asas yang membolehkan saintis masuk ke kawasan terpencil itu. Pembinaan infrastruktur itu telah mendapatkan pengkelasan hutan Kelas 1 untuk Kanyon Imbak pada Disember 2008, yang melarang sebarang akiviti pembalakan di kawasan itu. Alfa Lima telah meneruskan kerja-kerja pembinaan infrastruktur dengan Yayasan Sabah, dengan pembinaan tapak jambatan yang kedua yang akan memudahkan akses untuk saintis ke kawasan yang lebih terpencil. Ini akan membenarkan saintis membuat penyelidikan yang lebih lanjut tentang kehidupan di hutan hujan prima ini. Kumpulan-kumpulan Raleigh telah mengambil peluang keemasan ini untuk menikmati persekitaran yang segar, mejelajahi hutan pada waktu malam dan mempelajari lebih tentang hutan hujan tropika. Mereka juga telah menikmati air terjun Imbak setiap hari. Imbak Canyon is one of the last remaining untouched and relatively unexplored areas of rainforest in Sabah. More people have been to Everest Base Camp than have visited this primary conservation area. It is home to wildlife including elephants, orangutans and rare birds. Imbak’s ecological value means that future conservation is vital. Previously Raleigh has worked with Yayasan Sabah (a government institute) to create vital infrastructure for scientists visiting the area. The building of this infrastructure helped Imbak Canyon achieve Class 1 protection in December 2008, preventing future logging . Alpha Five has continued this work with Yasasan Sabah, starting on the foundations for a second suspension bridge offering year round access to the whole of the protected area. These areas have yet to be fully explored and this will give scientists access for further research. Groups have taken full advantage of being in this area, getting up early to spot gibbons and hornbills. Groups have also taken part in night treks where they have learned more about this pristine environment. For many the highlight has been their daily swim under the magnificent Imbak Waterfall. 8
