COMMUNITY KOMUNITI
Alpha 2 - Kampung Kopuron
Throughout Sabah there are still remote communities without access to
clean, drinkable water. In many villages water is collected in large tanks
and barrels from rainfall or from polluted rivers, meaning local residents
are at risk from poor health. Gravity water feed systems are a simple and
inexpensive way of providing local communities with fresh water.
Kampung Kopuron is in the Telupid district of Sabah, which is four hours
from Kota Kinabalu. Prior to this project, residents suffered from a lack of
water as the community shared its water source with a nearby kampung.
In the village, Raleigh groups installed a new filter system, designed by
Tomher Industries that had never been tried before in Malaysia. The new
system will deliver clean drinking water straight from the tap for the first
time in Sabah. Villagers no longer have to boil water before using it.
Throughout the project Raleigh worked in partnership with Tomher
Industries, who provided the filtration system and PACOS Trust, a
community based voluntary organisation. It is hoped that the success
of this project will allow it to be used as a model for similar projects in
the future. Raleigh is grateful to HSBC who provided the funding for this
project.
